Should you use spinning or casting gear for jig fishing? On this awesome Summer Flounder (Fluke) fishing trip I spent half the trip with casting gear and half with the new spinning version of my Jig and Bounce casting rod. The results were surprising to me!

Great Video as always. I have just completed a trip with Helen H party boat fishing the Nantucket Shoals. I needed to move up to 16 oz. to keep from scoping. I brought both a spinning setup as well as a bait caster (Daiwa Lexa wn 300) And I have to say that I had a hard time with back lashing and sinker free-falling issues even after adjusting the spool knob. adjust to tight and it takes to long for the sinker to get down without scoping. Adjust to lose and I ran into back lashing issues, my spinning setup seen to work the best whenever I had to either go up or down in weight while fishing a party boat.

My go to set up is a Shimano Trevala and Shimano Thunnis CI4 4000. I can cast really far underhand. Since it's a baitrunner, I can release line by the bar that controls the bait runner....really easy... no bail flip needed! I go to a baitcaster over 5 oz. Since the current is usually ripping then, casting isn't usually helpful. Thanks for another fun video! Fluke is my jam!!!

Hey John when I first started watching your fluke videos I wanted versatility so I tried an experiment by putting a shimano bait runner 4500 spooled with 15lb braid on a pen carnage rod which is a little on the heavy side but very stiff and has an extra long butt for locking under the forearm. The bait runner has a free spool function with a switch just below the arm where it hooks up to the rod. It’s very easy to flip the switch with the other hand and turning the rod handle even a little will disengage the free spool function. I made this set up because my buddy likes to anchor and fish bait while I’d rather be drifting or casting with lures, so it allows me to do both easily.

Great video John! Casting gear for standard drift jigging. I prefer spinning gear for a faster drop when fishing 100+ft with a light bucktail while holding over structure with the motors. Spinning gear when jigging bare metals for better action (flutter) on the drop.

another great video - thanks for the details. I prefer spinning rods off the beach and bait casters on a boat. Although I've gotten better with casting bait casters, the spinning reals are just so much easier off the beach without much effort. Conversely on a boat, bait casters are way easier to drop so I think we are on the same page.

I'll use both quite happily, but when I was kayak or jetski fishing and could carry fewer setups, I went for the spinning reel because it was more versatile. I prefer a baitcaster for pure vertical jigging or dragging softbaits behind a boat as it's easier to detect bites on the drop.

I don't get a chance to go out in a boat like this, but i enjoy casting reels for surf casting. I guess long ago I fell in love with the Abu Garcia 6500 CL series and just find it easy to cast and start reeling. Obviously really light baits can be an issue in rare times. Just something about it that is easy and natural for me. I guess just the path i took and you get kinda locked into it with rods.

I Christened 2 of my new set ups on a party boat just 3 days ago. I got one on my avet and one on my abu 5500 I was on the “wrong side of the boat”…. I got tired of lifting and re dropping by the end of the day so I grabbed a boat spinner and being able to cast out 20-30 feet makes a nice difference it was just a little weird getting the hook set down but if I was using spinning to cast out I’m only using a single buck tail .. I ended up getting a couple more shorts and another keeper and believe it or not that was in 6-8 feet of water with 1 oz buck tail and 6 inch gulp … I’m now going to be my self a spinning set up from j and h lol

I only use spinning when fishing by inshore structure for casting and bouncing the bucktail back or when there’s absolutely no drift I’ll break out the spinning gear and start casting. I typically like casting gear because I feel it gets better action on heavier jigs. I do love both but casting for bottom fishing for me.

Love the feel and hook set on this rod... 7 keepers , let 3 go as I had 4 bled on ice in 2.5 hrs. I prefer spinning tackle, so for bottom fishing like fluke I use spinning. I do a lot of lake trout jigging, where I'm actively reeling up and dropping back. For that type jigging a baitcast reel is better, just press the thumb bar to drop back down, no constant opening a bail.

I prefer conventional tackle for fishing of a boat just because I do a lot large mouth fishing it’s all similar to what I use. However I’ll use spinning if I’m fishing from shore dock pier because it’s easier to cast spinning . with conventional one backlash every so often causes me to break of jigs of and I hate losing gear.

I have used spinning on head boats though for casting as you stated. One thing I have adopted is using a left hand retrieve. I noticed your spinning is on the left but the Accurist is on the right. But Im 6'6" and prefer a longer butt 13" or better to tuck the butt under my arm for added leverage especially when Toggin. Question how come you designed it with a larger fore grip 7.5" + and rear about 11.5"? Why such a large fore grip? The rod would have been perfect for me if the fore grip was 2" less and rear 13.5" to br able to tuck it under my arm. The rear on the casting blanks are great. Thanks Joe

I use the dark matter Skinner casting rod with Accurist reel for fluking, but I think I’m going to buy the spinning version. The only downside to the casting version with the small reel/spool is that it takes a long time to pick up line after a big hook set. I find that I lose fish often during the first three seconds as I scramble to get a quick six or seven cranks on the reel handle to pick up a few feet of line. If you’re catching six pounders that are glued to the bottom, this is less of an issue, but if you’re catching New Jersey slot fish, you’ll have 5 feet of line to pick up real quick after the hook set. Not being able to apply proper pressure during that first three seconds of the fight is something I struggle with on the casting setup…at least me. That said John, what spinning reel were you using today? Or what would you recommend for fluking with the 63 version of the spinning rod?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing Год назад
A comment on your baitcasting reel challenge that I understand completely - are you using a high-speed baitcaster? I use the 7:1 gear ratio accurists, but they also sell slower ones. Still, I feel the same as you do about being able to pick up line faster with the spinner, which is one of the reason I use only spinning for tog jigging. I'm using a Penn Clash 3000 with a Slammer handle and 10# X9 braid on this one. If I had to suggest one for jigging, I think I'd go with a Tsunami Evict 3000.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks John. I use the same 7.0.1 Accurist that you do. I might try a “left-handed” version of the Accurist reel. I jig with my right hand and put the rod butt under my right arm after the hook set. I feel like that transition as my right hand goes from jigging mode to reeling mode is a little sloppy compared to a spinning set up where I can crank on the fish instantaneously after the hook set. I am thinking that a left handed Accurist might function a little bit more like a spinning set up in that I can start cranking on that handle with my left hand immediately after the hook set. Oh the silly things that keep me up at night. Thanks for the advice on the spinning set up. Going to purchase along with the jig and bounce later this evening.

Thank you. What reel size though? And would that set up be good for blackfish/tog also? Thank you for replying too. Big fan of you and your rods. I will be for life. I fell in love with the casting one. It's now my favorite rod to use! I get compliments on it all the time!

when i'm jigging for some species, like bluefish, false albacore, and other small tuna, i usually prefer a high speed retrieve, and i don't think any conventional reel can match the speed of a fast spinning reel. but when i'm jigging fluke, weakfish, or stripers, i need no such high speed capability, so i prefer the physics of a conventional reel to give more cranking power and mechanical advantage for lifting those fish from the bottom. fighting the fast movers can also require putting line on the reel in a hurry, and conventionals can't match the speed of a fast spinning reel.

I definitely prefer spinning gear because in situations with little to no drift I can cast without having to waste time on switching to a spinner from a conventional setup. Also spinners tend to be lighter which lets me feel the bite out better.

Hi John, I have noticed that your casting rod is a skewed. What I mean by that is that your line guides on your casting rod are not inline with the rod. Why is that?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing Год назад
Look up "acid wrapped rod". By transitioning the line from the top of the rod to the bottom it reduces torque. Very popular on many of the better rods these days.

Why so rigid on the presentation John? If the drift is that bad instead of drift socking/trolling motor and or bumping in and out of gear just switch to a chicken rig or fish a spoon. Instead of forcing the jig/teaser.
