POP FESTIVAL recorded live in august 16,1980 at CASTLE DONNINGTON. Included: RAINBOW - STARGAZER SCORPIONS - LOVING YOU SUNDAY MORNING SCORPIONS - ANOTHER PIECE OF MEAT SAXON - BACKS TO THE WALL
I had this on vinyl back in the day. Loved Scorpions the best. Also Riot. I was a huge Rainbow fan but Graham Bonnet is just not in the same league as Dio! Don’t even get me started on Joe Lynn Turner.
I bought this record in 1981 or 1982 and I left speechless with Stargazer, as the production is very heavy, Bonnet screams like there is no tomorrow, Powell rides the drums, Glover is a rock and Blackmore plays an ubelievable solo. Also the song from Touch "Ya don 't you know what love is" (B side) was very good.
Later this year, here in Seattle, I saw Cozy Powell, Paul Raymond, Gary Barden, and Chris Glenn all playing with Michael Schenker. MSG was opening for Cheap Trick in the Seattle Center Coliseum. This sounds like Bob Daisley playing bass with Rainbow; this same year, 1980, he would join Lee Kerslake, Randy Rhoads, and Ozzy to record Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary Of A Madman at Ridge Farm Studios, in Rusper, UK. I saw Blizzard Of Ozz here in Seattle's Paramount Theater with Motorhead opening. In 1979, I saw the Scorpions at the Coliseum (Seattle). This is obviously Michael Schenker playing Lovedrive because Matthias Jabs could never play that well. P.s. I also saw April Wine open for Heart here in Seattle in 80 or 81, and they were fckn stellar. Also saw Saxon but can't recall much - too much drinky. Fck! I also saw Riot open for Blue Oyster Cult and Black Sabbath here at Seattle's massive Memorial Stadium... I'm just reading off the bands on that Castle Donnington album cover. Fckn A, Graham Bonnet is singing like a God. Glen Hughes STILL sings like a fucking GOD at seventy years of age.
fortunately, complete recordings from some of the bands performing that day are available...it's amazing that Judas Priest was left out of this album when it came out...
I was employed as security at this event, not the uniformed ones, it was crazy, I looked after the cafe and stopped people pinching the leather jackets from the shop and then it was off up to red gate lodge, I played pool with nearly all the bands playing and the only incident I recall was Richie Blackmore tried to bring two young Japanese girls into the lodge, he was not happy to be refused entry, as the night went on I slipped away backstage and enjoyed myself, I did a few gigs at Donnington, we were Herbie's lads (Herby Robinson) as he recruited us,and the main uniformed security guy was a big bloke called tiny, he was a sound geezer, happy days
The greatest version of stargazer out there.bonnet doesn't compare to dio but blackmore is on fire here and the solos are awesome! The first ever gig/festival at donington.
