The castle on a hill above the Dunajec River was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries by the Gierałt-Ośmioróg family. Originally it was a completely wooden structure. The castle appeared for the first time in written sources in 1382: it already had defensive walls, but the remaining buildings were still made of wood. At that time (at the end of the 14th century), a brick residential building was built near the southern wall. Until 1535, Tropsztyn remained in the hands of the Chebda family, Starykoń coat of arms, who gradually expanded it (although in 1521, king Sigismund I the Old confiscated the castle from Andrew Chebda for a short period for failing to show up for a military expedition against the Teutonic Knights). In the 15th century, a five-story, four-sided tower was built in the north-west corner of the castle hill. Due to its location on the border between the Crown of Poland and Hungary, Tropsztyn Castle was exposed to frequent sabotage border raids, which resulted in the destruction of the facility. At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was completely ruined. Reconstruction works, which were started in 1995 on the initiative of a private owner, led to a partial reconstruction of the complex, but with a rather controversial element, which is... a helicopter landing pad 🚁.
