For game design, preserving the history of our art is quite possibly the most important thing we can do. However, it isn't easy, especially for the early online games. Many companies are willing to discard or outright bury their history, servers are shut down, and the threat of losing a big part of our history looms ever closer with each passing generation. It seems like there is very little we can do. And the worst part is, it might be our own fault. Is there anyway to resurrect the dead game? Let's take a look at that in this Design Documentary!

Hey, just a quick update, as of writing this comment, the fine people at the Castlevania: Harmony of Despair Unity discord have managed to get the Unity version of the game up and running! You can check it out here: discord.gg/s5h3rUu Also, just to be clear, I'm in no way affiliated with the Unity port, I'm just spreading the word.

@@SoberDwarf Console games die. PC games last forever, even if the online doesn't. When PS5 comes out, who's going to want to hook up their old PS3 just to play this game? Meanwhile, 2 generations of PCs later, you can still turn on Steam and play HoD. We need Steam to be the go-to platform for all games.

Steam is definitely the most convenient platform, although GOG has some arguably better consumer-friendly policies. Both have games not found on the other as well, making both desirable to interact with.

I admit I'm guilty of doing the same thing. Like I said, Steam is convenient. Although it is nice that GOG did the GOG Connect thing where some Steam games you own could be copied over to your GOG account, it seems like they're not doing much with that anymore. I respect GOG a lot but hardly use it just because I have so much on Steam.

Interestingly enough... I was just talking to my girlfriend the other night on a car ride home about my concern for video game preservation. She hardly plays video games herself. (Though, that is starting to change ever since I got her a 3DS and a copy of Ocarina) I talked about my fears for digital and my fears for physical. Needless to say, I talked her ear off and she hardly understood my rambling.
@SoberDwarf
@SoberDwarf 5 лет назад
I sort of understand. It's difficult because it does require a lot of understanding regarding how the industry works (and in the game industry, everything that seems intuitive or a positive gain for the business runs on opposite day). There are ways to convey it, but I totally understand the feeling like it never has the same gravity of the situation. A lot of games are personal experiences. Like, I know for a fact that there are some games that have gotten me through some extremely rough times in my life (Ocarina of Time being one of them, actually). Knowing the fact they might disappear simply because someone decides it's no longer profitable for me to have access to those memories is something that is incredibly... and pardon the pun, sobering.
@onionsilk

@@SoberDwarf Sobering indeed. The Resident Evil remake for GCN is actually what sparked the discussion in the first place. I'm replaying the series for her so she can see why it is I love it, just like I did with Metal Gear last Winter. We started from the original RE on PSX and we are currently on RE 4. That's relevant because I told her that once we are done with all the games in the main series I'm going to be playing the remake with her. She didn't see the point, stating that she'd already seen me play the first one once and didn't need me to do it again with better graphics. I had to explain that it was more or less a complete overhaul of the original that expanded on everything that made the first one so memorable. I finally convinced her by telling her that it'd be like seeing Shadow Moses Island in HD, just like we had done last Winter. She was sold.

The game is great, there is still people online. It seriously needs many patchs and updates, if a miracle occurs and Konami cares about this, they should add more maps, characters, downgrade Soma, the Valmanways and "Yatsucard" (seriously they break the game and make it boring, even more boring when people use them in that way online), and fix many glitches. I mean the game isn't dead at all, I still play it even with random 6 people at times on the PS3. So, this game just needs a miracle.

Don't worry, you have my validation. I know how Harmony of Dissonance players feel from experience with both Battalion Wars 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising. Battalion Wars 2 has already lost its official online back in 2014. There are only a few players who are trying to get the game's online back and running, and unfortunately, the involved community is generally toxic even before members of the Advance Wars subreddshit invaded to harass me with malicious intent. It sucks, considering the game has Co-Op, even if there are problems on randoms when you have to rely on teammates not being brain-dead to even clear a Co-Op map. Multiplayer balance IS off, but there are maps where it's not unmanageable, Cold War on Assault coming to mind. As for Kid Icarus Uprising, Nintendo may not have pulled the plug on the servers...yet....but online is practically a ghost town, and I've actually had experiences with hackers like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1tdndnTEcNo.htmlm29s It doesn't help that the game already has blatant power creep that completely imbalances the game well before the AFKers and hackers are a thing. What I'm wishing didn't get buried by problems like that is the game's Power system. How the Power system works is that the player can fit given Tetris-style shapes into a 6x6 grid and each involved shape provides a given Power with a limited number of charges. A Power named "Super Armor" makes use of this to provide a happy medium between unconditional flinching and the standard of having martial arts: the Power is able to prevent flinching, but only for a limited amount of time per charge. This also happens to be a showcase of what really happens with The Big Guy: that they still have finite energy, but it's still quite a bit that can see good use. Also, watch the matches that start here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FEGo1hIizyY.htmlh5m12s What I do is make use of the shapes of the opponent's Powers to figure out how to bust their setup. You see how I can keep people from just using range against me via technical gameplay. And that by the way brings up another good thing about the Power system that I figured out recently: that the Mighty Glacier/Melee Tornado staple Powers that are better for the given matchups have a demand of the brand of gameplay the opposing character is meant to involve, with the Armor Powers representing martial arts and the Tag Powers involving technical gameplay. I know I wouldn't want the working gameplay of these two games to be lost to the sands of time.
@SoberDwarf

Yeah, when doing research for this video, there were, sadly, *way* too many games to count whose online experience has been stifled, one way or another. It's legitimately painful to think about all the different designs, mechanics and not to mention tens of thousands of man hour that disappear with the player base or servers. Some games obviously hit harder than others, but it's a shame that there isn't a great solution to it. It's why I take the responsibility of game preservation so seriously, because someday, someone possibly a decade from now who wants to play Castlevania: HD because they want to dive deep into the history of Castlevania and there might be no conventional way to re-experience it. The only way they might be able to is to live vicariously though let's plays and other videos. Same applies for Kid Icarus or Advance Wars as well. I honestly wish there was more that could be done but until we get the point where A.I. is advanced enough to play games and create a 'bot' experience indistinguishable from humans, there isn't a lot we can really do other than form strong communities to help preserve it. That said, with games like C:HD or KIU, there is hope that someone will see these gameplay mechanics and concepts and maybe create a spiritual successor, so even if the original game might be lost to time, the experience might not be. It obviously depends on future developers but just another hope.
@AlphaZeroX96

I disagree on the offline component. To me, it's awesome. The timer, while meant for multiplayer, is reminiscent of CV1 having a timer mechanic. I skipped the parts where you showed the SoTN and Origins maps because I haven't played in then yet. Sad that gamers want an online experience rather than that of single player and/or local multiplayer. It's said that the Xbox 360 version still has a lot of players online. Mobile gaming is not a bad thing. It just has a bad reputation because of greed and Angry Birds. Emulators exist on android. I happen to love Castlevania 64.
@SoberDwarf
@SoberDwarf 5 лет назад
The 360 version picked back up when they released backwards compatibility to the Xbox One, so I'm really glad people have a chance to play it online again, at least for a little while! I think we'll just have to agree to disagree regarding the online. While for the sake of game preservation I believe that every online game should have an offline component (which I'm thankful for the PS3 version having such, but it comes with its own gameplay design issues such as camera control and a lack of individual character building), the thing is that there are no multiplayer designed castlevania games like this one, and it could only do that by being multiplayer. The game was specifically designed for it and it's that design which makes it unique. In order to make a strong multiplayer experience these days (and expect the game to sell), you almost have to design with online in mind because couch Co-Op isn't a thing. I'm just pointing out the issues that is inherent with all of it. Mobile gaming can be great as well, I agree! Just not whatever Castlevania game was feature, because it seems to have all the problems endemic to the reputation of mobile gaming, such as lootboxes and pay to win features.

I am so annoyed that they brought Lords of Shadow to Steam, but not Harmony of Despair. My only hope of this game coming to PC is Xenia adding support for it, with the online intact through private servers. I have no faith this game will ever come to PC and UniHD does not do it for me due to how rude the developer was to his fans, even willing to showcase the last three chapters in action, fully finished, and decide to not release them to the public. It has a lot of QOL changes, but the jankier physics, poor load times and fear of losing save data all play a major role in the game not being as enjoyable as the original. If it at least had the same physics and load times as the original, I could forgive it due to the new chapters it added in being surprisingly solid. Harmony of Despair, like many games, were destined to remain console exclusive. It is a very sad world to be a fan of obscure games. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Protect Me Knight, Harmony of Despair, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, Guardian Heroes HD. Video games I would love to have on Steam and continue to have a lingering faith they will be there someday. The most recent platform that has these games is the Xbox One. And it makes me very grateful because it did indeed breath more life into the servers of these games. Great video. Excellent points were made and I am certain Harmony of Despair will live on. Castlevania is a popular franchise, even if this particular entry is obscure. Had it not been Castlevania, I would have no faith that this game would still be remembered. The gameplay is indeed very unique and I would at least be grateful if more games continued it. But more than anything, Harmony of Despair needs to come to Steam.
@SoberDwarf
@SoberDwarf 5 лет назад
I was *really* hoping for a PC release of HoD myself. UniHD is a good attempt but yeah, it felt off. I had figured it just needed a lot of polish because it was still technically in alpha, but it doesn't seem like it will ever reach the same level as the original. That said, I would love to see an HoD-like game be developed, even if it isn't castlevania. To me, the premise alone was incredibly interesting and I think it could do well enough considering there hasn't been a game before it or since, and would be a nice change of pace from all the typical action-platformers we've seen in recent years.
@Medachod
@Medachod 5 лет назад
@@SoberDwarf Well, you are right. It won't ever look any better, especially since the developer abruptly bailed out. Would have been all good, had it not been for the fact he showcased more content and decided against releasing it. I'd love another game like Harmony of Despair, though. Either a PC port of Harmony of Despair -(PlayStation Now does not count)- or a game like it. I heard a more talented developer is trying to tackle a PC port of Harmony of Despair, so at least we will have something close to it within the next few years.

Actually, the PS3 version does have couch co-op! I didn't cover it because it doesn't function quite as well as online co-op . The PS3 co-op doesn't have split screen, so the map zooms out to keep all players on the screen at once. Also, all players start in the P1 spot, so you lose some of the level design, but overall it's a good option!

There's a bunch of video game companies out there that want people who grew up in the eighties in the nineties to forget those games so they can focus on buying the brand new games. Also video game companies do not think in the long term. My friends keep calling me an idiot because I refuse to buy always online games like Elder Scrolls Online I told them what if that game service gets shut down will I be able to play it then that means the disc I bought would be worthless. I don't want to get attached to a game that's online only or is heavenly dependent on an online component
@SoberDwarf

Same. There are a few games I will play (FFXI, PSO, a few other games) but it seems like it's increasingly more common for games with online components to die within 2-3 years as the "next big release" hits; most likely from the same company which proceeds to pull support from it. I'm willing to dive into any single player game without looking too much into it, but an online game I will wait weeks to see how it plays out before I'm willing to even dip my toes into it.

Since Harmony of Despair has local co-op too, there is another way to play with someone else online. It's complicated to set up and not cheap but with a PC with a capture card, a ConsoleTuner Titan One (a device that allows to use other controllers on a PS3 including inputs from a PC), game streaming software (I use Parsec but there are others), and a good internet connection, it is possible to stream the capture from the PS3 to a friend and play local co-op games remotely.

I'm sure not a whole lot has changed in terms of design philosophy between the original and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (the last 'traditional' MH game I played online), but I couldn't verify the experience between MH1 and MHW. Considering a major part of my thesis for that was how MHW evolved while still being faithful the original vision of the series, not being able to play with other players gave me a lot of cold feet in regards to that (and it's sort of what springboarded the idea for this video). Good to know I got a little bit correct at least in passing!

Oh hell yeah, bizarre to comment in this perspective but this was one of the videos I loved podcasting, excited to watch :) Just such a great topic. I'm still sitting on a huge collection of no-intro out of spite for Nintendo's push against roms in 2018, no regrets there other than wishing I'd gone deeper and had external drives to really back up more than I could at the time. Oh god now I remember the immediate feeling of longing this video filled me with when I first heard it. Chromehounds, you didn't get half of what you deserved. While I would never say it was perfect, it's a game that's stuck in the consciousness of myself and a close friend for its unique slow-methodical-tactics driven take on a mech game. What with it's ongoing online war with winners and losers and an evolving battlefield, and sega just flipped the switch while From software moved on to rehashing Armored Core for the umpteenth time and shifting focus to souls-like endeavors. Can't say From messed up there, though I couldn't care less about armored core in comparison to Chromehounds :( Chromehounds can only access the tutorial "story mode" now and because 95% of the parts were online only- you can't even make those online hounds to use in the single player :( I'm still utterly impressed by the concept behind Harmony of Despair, I wish I had gotten the chance to play it with friends. I just can't get over the characters playing like their previous entries, that's so cool and I missed out lol I know it's the fact that you brought up monster hunter at the start which is why it's on my mind but dang, really checks a lot of the appeal boxes of monhun now don't it? Different playstyles accounted for, cooperative, 'hunts' that take 15 min solo take half that cooperatively or much less if you're all acquainted and rushing. It's the monster hunter coop experience in castlevania. Or more accurately, it's coop and I just have monhun on the brain. What a great call to action/motivation and damn straight your work needs shared because it's a joy every time. This slow re-watch through your work has been a joy and I'll repeat what I say most comments I leave, and I mean it. Appreciate your work, Sober. Have a good one :) And it's a fucking riot to hear this end-joke again lol

@SoberDwarf
@SoberDwarf 5 лет назад
I've actually thought about that a few times and did some research and a lot of the routes that would work I couldn't quite do yet. Most merchandise places require a "minimum order" of about 50-100 units. Some require you to get a bulk order (like get so many orders in a certain amount of time) or want you to pay upfront for the order itself and they'll keep the stock and ship it for a bit of a cut. Or you can order it and ship it yourself. There are places that you can submit designs and they will print it, but generally those take a huge cut (I seen some as high as 80% effectively.) None of those are currently an option, but I figure by the time I hit around 10,000 subs, I might get to a point where I can consider doing something like that. There are definitely plans too though and when it gets to that point, there will be plenty of announcements regarding it.

I barely put time into the demo of this game due to being unfamiliar with the Castlevania series, but mostly because I could not stand the camera making your characters and the action so small on the screen. But I really liked this video since it was nice to see how something that didnt interest me could still mean a lot to many other people.
@SoberDwarf
@SoberDwarf 5 лет назад
That was the biggest problem for a lot of people, and definitely a flaw in the game. It took messing around with the demo a few times to realize that you could zoom in rather than play where it was zoomed out to half the screen, and then you could change the default, but even then I wasn't impressed with the demo at all. I am glad I gave the full game a try though.

@SoberDwarf it was crazy how they were developing the game, DLC and updates for 2 years and actually got a game out and completed, but then the Writer Director licensing disagreement still ended up biting it in the ass and shutting down development and any update outside a hack exploit or severe flaw. That's all I can really remember. I haven't seen anyone talk about that ever, it's lost in time. I myself have been trying to make my own game for over 15 years and I have lost so much, mainly zelda clones, I only have remnants that I am putting in my game but there's so much more that was lost. I wish I had the foresight to have really backed up everything i enjoyed regularly, filming myself on my desktop and keeping files. Somethings I had lost from accidentally nuking my PC a few times.
@SoberDwarf
@SoberDwarf 5 лет назад
Now days, I'm so paranoid about something being lost that I basically back up everything I create and find. Like, outside of the EDF video (which had footage that was basically 300+ GB of raw footage), I have every asset and video I have used to make these videos.) But even then, hard drives fail, even backups fail, and accidents happen. So we do depend on people and methods other than ourselves. I'm just one person out of a entire community of game preservationist. And I think in recent events I'm more passionate about it now, and I back up things even if I wouldn't normally save them.

Decided to look it up on RU-vid, and here we are! I already like your stuff, man, keep it up. Castlevania HD was the first and so far only game I ever wrote a FAQ on GameFAQ for (the Charlotte character guide). Every few years I'd remember that I never updated it to include the DLC and there were a few inconsistencies/typos/misinformation I meant to fix. God this game was... interesting. It's both a throwback to Classic Castlevania Castleraiding, and quite honestly it was fairly fun, but Goddammit! This game was indeed a Co-op Online game! Playable Solo, but this sucker was downright Hard! And Just hard Skillwise, I mean Hard as in I have to REPLAY EVERY LEVEL MORE THAN 10 TIMES JUST TO GET GEAR!!! This game isn't even close to the Gameplay that Syphmony or many of the GB games had as each character is Hamstringed by the EQUIPMENT that you need in order to fucking BEEF up your Character's stats! Which is why you need another Player/character! For Navigation, Puzzles, Treasure Hunting, and To BEAT the Goddamn Timer! This sucker with it's 6 stages eventually got more stages, more Characters through DLC, but fucking hell...the Game just wasn't reasonable! Not to mention we NEVER got a Boss Rush Mode for this! It would've been really fun to go up against Alot of Bosses! What also sucked the fun out of the game was Konami Patching the Shit out of Charlotte's Healing Skill and the Skull Ring Cheat that allowed players to beat most of this game with ease....but with the patch, it screwed the game up and made it hard for everyone to play! This game acts like it wants to b your friend, but hammpers YOU so much if you don't have a dedicated team.
@SoberDwarf
@SoberDwarf 5 лет назад
Yeah, going from scratch is really difficult, and it ends up being a lot more grind heavy on all counts; and the fact that you almost have to grind everything to begin with (gotta level up those sub weapons for them to be useful), the game was designed around the multiplayer mode, and I'm pretty sure the single-player was there just so it wouldn't be an "online only" game. Which good for them, but it is really apparent that it wasn't designed for a single person to play through entirely.
