Episode 9
Castlevania 2 : Simon's Quest is one of the most influential NES games ever made! Castlevania is such a big franchise for Konami, its easy to forget it all started with the trilogy of games on the NES.
This game was the first time that the Castlevania series would go full on non-linear, and it is this type of gameplay that would define future entries in the series, like the iconic Symphony of the Night. In fact, many of the ideas in this game would strongly influence that game.
Simon's Quest has amazing visuals for an 8-bit game, and features an incredible sound track. This would be the first appearance of the song "Bloody Tears" which would be used in many of the later games, and was even heard in the Netflix television series.
In this video we will:
* Find EVERY WEAPON and SUB WEAPON!
* Fight ALL of the game's bosses, with THREE different strategies for defeating Dracula!
* Understand the confusing geography of the Transylvanian countryside!
* Demonstrate a NEW path through the game that will make it MUCH easier!
* Explore the Day/Night cycle and how to take advantage of it!
* Learn a damage boost trick that can teleport you across the map INSTANTLY!
* Reveal all THREE different endings, and how to get them!
SPECIAL THANKS to viewer David Anber for not only suggesting this game as an episode, but for also sending me his personal map of the game!
NOTE: You DO need to collect the Red Crystal to be able to enter the final area. While it IS possible to complete the rest of the game without it, you'll be barred access to Castlevania. If you follow the path I recommend for the video, you should have no problem getting the Red Crystal, and finishing the game- just make sure you don't forget it!
Thanks for watching!

About the Garlic: if you drop it on an enemy, it will deal 1 damage, without stopping, until the garlic despawns after ~20 seconds. It will stun-lock any enemy it hits. It is only usable on enemies who you can drop it on top of, or who will walk into it. Flying enemies are virtually immune to it. If you drop a second or a third garlic, the damage will increase to 2 or 3 points of damage per hit, until they expire. They're all on their own individual timers and the damage dealt will drop accordingly as they expire. This weapon is great to drop on top of dragon skeletons to perma-stun them, or two headed monsters. They'll stop Death too if he runs into it. And if you use laurels, you can also use this weapon to easily defeat Dracula just like all the other stunning weapons as well. It may take 4 rounds of laurels to do this but it can be done. It is also without a doubt, the most cumbersome way to defeat Dracula so... You deserve a lot of swag points for defeating the end-game boss with this hard strategy.

Hi, I just discovered this channel and I've watched 5 of your videos today! It's good stuff! You were asking why do you get Dracula's ring, and not some other body part? Well I think it's a reference to the Hammer Dracula movies. At the end of the first one, the last image as Dracula dies lingers on his hand as it turns to dust, leaving his ring. In the sequels, his ring is often highlighted as an artifact as the camera often makes a point of it. In a sequel, Scars of Dracula, his belongings were preserved and returned to him upon his resurrection. The ring was one of those items as he can be seen wearing it again. In further sequels, Hammer's idea was to have a successor follow Dracula in Taste the Blood of Dracula, wearing his cape and ring. Essentially this was a way to recast the role. A soft reboot by today's standards. But Christopher Lee returned to the role so the whole build up to the ring was half baked and ultimately dropped. So, I think Castlevania is referring to this, treating the ring as one of his possessions that must be returned to him to complete his resurrection.

3:15 - Well, here's the thing. Every weird solution is explained in red books you find throughout the game. Those clues never lie. It's just that you have to use Holy Water everywhere. There is a clue that says you have to kneel by the lake, and there is also a townsperson that mentions a cliff. And if you put the two clues together, you get a clear picture that you have to kneel by the cliff to get a result.

I beat this game as a kid, took tons of time to figure it out, but only needed a couple hints in Nintendo power (not the full guide) to beat it. Bought it at a thrift shop just after the SNES came out and everybody was dumping their NES stuff, but before I got my SNES (for Christmas a year later). I would say it was in the top 10 games in terms of how much I enjoyed it. But I can't go back to it. The NES was punishing on control inputs. I beat Battletoads, TMNT (the first one) and this, some of the harder popular games on the NES. But I no longer have the patience to play them. I do miss the difficulty though, with only a few games that I've played since that really reward players for their efforts (other than fighting games, which are the most rewarding of skill games there are).

This game has always made me curious about one important thing - Is there a GOOD night to have a curse? Also, in regards to the endings, if what I read is correct, the text for the different endings got shifted during the translation process, which made it so that each ending screen has the wrong text. It's probably more of a theory, since I can't even remember where I read that, but it seems pretty likely, given how sloppy the localisation process was. lol
@Hilipinapixili
@Hilipinapixili 2 года назад
Apparently, the original Japanese version also had Simon dying in the normal ending, so it wasn't a localization error. Most likely, the code itself is referencing the wrong piece of text instead, hence why it seems to be wrong in both versions.

At least this is just different ending screens, none of which is that big of a deal... the worst offender for me is Star Control 2. I went from loving to hating that game so quickly as a kid, when I realized everything I had done was meaningless if I couldn't beat one space battle, and no matter what that save was essentially bricked and any plans I had for exploring other parts of the map would need to be left for a new game... which I would never enjoy as much as I had enjoyed my time playing when I felt free to explore. At least it's been modded now, but I always thought that was such a strange choice, to not even include like a free exploration mode you can unlock by beating the game normally, or anything like that...

My dad played Simon’s Quest over and over again and I would love watching him play it... i memorised his playthroughs so much that when I played it for myself I actually beat it as a kid :) I will always love Simon’s Quest and Super Mario Bros 2, they were the 1st NES game I experienced. After that I was a gamer for life

The first ending shown is the best one: in the second one (Day 8-16), Simon succumbs to his wounds, but at least makes it out of Dracula's castle, and that he is seen at the gravestone during the day means that he's still under the effects of the curse at night and the curse hasn't been fully lifted; in the third (Day 16 and on), it could be inferred that Simon didn't make it out of the castle, as he isn't seen at Dracula's gravestone and the text in this ending is a eulogy for Simon and the curse is still a blight on the land with no one knowing that it's still present. In the first (Day 1-8), Simon is at the gravestone during sunset, meaning the curse no longer has any sway on him at night. This is the only ending that we know that Simon is alive at the end on the game, and his curse broken, despite Dracula (who will always come back) clawing out of his grave.

Thank you for the detailed walkthrough for this game. I tried playing this on the NES years ago as a kid and while I felt like I did okay and got fairly far into the game, I never finished it and after watching this realize I still had quite a ways to go before I would have been able to beat the game. I'm planning on trying to play through this again now that I own the Anniversary Collection on PC, and I'm sure I'll find this guide extremely helpful. You've earned another subscriber! :) Thanks for the wonderfully useful video and stay safe out there!

We had a WII U set up in our college's common room. Students would spend hours playing Smash 4 before and after classes. Someone brought in an NES, and all of the students who went to college straight out of high school kept getting killed on level one of Super Mario Bros. When it was my turn, I made it to 8-3 (using the warp pipes), and told everyone to hold down the jump button when stomping on goombas to get more air. Most of them had been tapping it, and falling into the second goomba when groups of them appeared. It's those little things we pick up from playing these classics endlessly.

The flaws and premature unpolished & seemingly unfinished release just didn't matter! Nintendo knew we would buy it anyways, and so they just wanted to spit out new games. The graphics & sound in 1988 made up for it 🥴 We just dealt with the frustration, bought Nintendo Power at the grocery store, and fillled out the postage paid white tear-out card inside (with check or money order included) for a monthly mail order subscription!!🤩🤠

Is "prossess" a combination of the words "process" and "possess"? Does this then mean that one must go through the process of possessing all of Dracula's body parts prior to destroying Dracula altogether to end Simon's curse (or quest, for that matter)? Perhaps, then, the word "prossess" would be intentional if this is the case.

Dracula's ring gives you a free hit when you are full health before deducting hp. It does not need to be equipped to function just looted and maybe equipped once. It's significance is related to the bloodstone and it's lore connection to vampires in parts of folklore.

If you found that in a Reddit thread, I’ve seen it and people dispute the claim there. Isn’t it great that the game is so mysterious and dizzying that we’re still arguing over its mysteries decades later?

I can confirm this isn't true. It's a rumor that's persisted for decades. It's likely that it originally had a function but they took it out of the game.

Your defense increases as you level up, meaning you won't always lose health when getting hit. It has nothing to do with Dracula's Ring. All the Ring does (along with the Cross) is allow you to enter Castlevania.

@54:06 I like to point out this part with the up and down blocks. If its going up and you jump off you get bigger height but if its doing down as you jump off you dont get as much height. I always jump off them as its going up. I never need to go to the edge and jump. This tip makes this part so much better.

I just played this for the first time and its crazy how 20 years since the AVGN video this game is considered bad. Antiquated by modern standards, yes. A heck of a Metroidvania to kick off the idea of the genre? Absolutely. I had fun with CV2 despite the faje blocks and lack of challenging boss fights, but it definitely should be regarded as one of the higher quality games in the NES library

Oh my god, before you said it, I never realized the Castlevania part at the end is really supposed to be stage 5 of the first Castlevania 🤯 You even cross the bridge before, that you cross in the other direction in Castlevania 1. And then the entrance hall is the infamous hallway before the Death fight. There's even roughly the same amount of pillars, each with one window in between them, just like in Castlevania 1 🤯 It really blows my mind

I remember when I was a kid finding the "clue" that said to hit your head against Deborah Cliff and one day I went to the cliff and was trying to figure out a way to "hit my head" against it, and I knelt down (in the game) a bunch of times and then my friend said something to me and while I was looking at him talking to him, I was holding down on the D pad so Simon was still kneeling... Voila! Tornado. I was in shock.

However you are correct that once you have the Flame Whip the golden knife is the ultimate sub weapon in the game in term of dmg. I use it all the time against Dracula.
