Anuya Jakatdar caught up with Rega Jha during the lockdown (she couldn't get away from us this time!) and had a conversation with her about her reading habits, favourite books ever, and their curious habit of smelling the necks of the men they're with...
Books Discussed:
Seven Brief Lessons on Physics by Carlo Rovelli
A Life Less Ordinary by Baby Halder
On Photography by Susan Sontag
Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion
The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot
The Power by Naomi Alderman
All About Love by Bell Hooks
Seeing Like a Feminist by Nivedita Menon
The Annihilation of Caste by B.R. Ambedkar
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker
Books on Toast is a books channel where we discuss literature: the good, the bad, the timepass, the serious, the best, the worst and everything else in between. New video every Wednesday!

I soooo agree with Rega when she says that we should allow ourselves to put aside a book if it is not serving us. In my teenage years I thought I was a non reader and dumb until I began finding the right books for me. There is no such thing as I hate reading, you are just reading the wrong books. Loved the episode, much needed content during this lockdown ❤️❤️

And one last comment, if you both are reading this, and choose to reply, or any other person reading and knows what I am talking about and chooses to reply. I absolutely love books that talk about feelings of feelings of feelings, like Rega said. People like Jodi Picoult and Joan Didion, so if you could recommend more books along these lines, I would be blessed (and would bless you too).

Growing older I realise the handicap of reading only Ambedkar. With maturity I gave some space to Indian metaphysics (S Radhakrishnan, teachers day waala bandha((and not new age crap)).. and saved myself from being an arrogant political opinion personality. If this too isn't complemented with hard travel and observation (of the people and my own biases), things are grossly incomplete. Politics mein padhneka nai. Politicians ,chaahe jitna accha bolta ho, sunne Ka nai.. Chup rehne Ka, apna kaam masst karneka, anyaay ho toh bolne Ka, pyaar se.. sune nai, aur peeche politician ho, to kat lene Ka, proper intezaar karne Ka, aur waqt aate hi, vaar karne ka (pyaar se). Gussa khud ko jalaata hai..

I have often wondered how Britishers were able to rule the subcontinent: a region full of culture, arts, literature and warriors. Why we did not resist? How could they rules us for centuries !!! As I am growing older, and as I come across opinions of people like you, I have come to a conclusion that Britishers were able to rule us for so long beacuse, for the first hundred and fifty years , we must have not realized we were being wronged. We had been so used to doing the same to our people. I understand that you don't want to be "angry all the time". Nobody does. But why do you thing that reading Ambedkar makes you an angry person? Is it coz reading Ambedkar made you sit down and take notice of the injustice happening around you. I think you are angry coz you cannot do anything about it. But instead of blaming the oppressors, you blame the book that helped you find this truth that can transform a nation and the whole humanity. If I have not completely misunderstood your comment, by dissing the writings of Ambedkar, it looks like you are spreading ignorance amongst the masses- which is a very dangerous thing in my opinion. Not only are you batting for ignorance , you also want to distract yourself and others from the truth. So you advise people to read metaphysics, which is actually pesudoscience.
@dobby3159
@dobby3159 4 года назад
I am not dissing you. In fact, I totally understand where you are coming from. I can relate to you. My point is why diss Ambedkar coz his writings make you angry. I think we get angry after reading his books coz we aren't really able to do anything about the systemic oppression. We don't need to. I think it is enough that we know the truth. It will become part of our subconscious and we will live a careful life. If it is in our subconcious, at some stage of our lives , we may do something that has an impact. Do you think Ambedkar, who wrote the Constitution of India, wasn't aware that anger eats you from inside out. He must have known it. The best of us get angry coz it would be abnormal to not feel anger upon learning such harsh truths. But we can learn to deal with it . The entire right wing's milieu is hate and anger. They have been in power for six years now, yet they are always angry. If they are not angry at Pakistan or China, they are angry at Indians who don't think like them. They are always angry. They believe in the power of anger. They capitalize hate . They capitalize anger. I personally think angry people have never and can never build a nation. Have a good day. 😌
@xdfckt2564
@xdfckt2564 4 года назад
@@dobby3159 Just because i mention Indian metaphysics and Radhakrishnan, you write me an essay on the right wing ? Kya yaar? 😄😄 I never "dissed" anybody. lol. But have you looked into the upanishads or the metaphysics of the other civilizations like you did Ambedkar? If you havent, your knowledge is only incomplete.. is all that i point. Im not angry at anyone.lol.. Im not of the right nor do i lean left (the egalitarian and peaceful failed as badly as the "angry" right wing, undeniably). Nor am i an enlightened centrist. I just do my job, try and do it well, that's all. Ive travelled enough, observed enough to not trust the popular opinion nor the politician, no matter how revolutionary or correct she might sound. i have zero opinions and beliefs and consider myself incredibly dumb and stare at doremon for all i care.. Ba

@@dobby3159 lol. No book changed the world. The goddamn Bible which was about peace failed. The Manifesto was a disaster. The American Constitution has ruined the Indian farm land. They look all plum, but the hand that wields it, will ALWAYS be one of lust for power. Leaders are of rarest of the rare. And you think a dead Ambedkar from books can lead civilisation into light?😂 Go out, get hurt, try helping, then see, my friend.. easy to say all what you said. Read Radhakrishnan. Toodles.
