Caterpillar making the switch to rear engine loaders in conjunction with a few other changes, like hydrostatic transmission, that kept them at the top of the heap. The rear engine keeps weight where it is needed, in the back as a counterweight. It also allows better engine access than a front engine loader, where you are fighting the lift arms and bucket linkages on the sides.
