Pre failure lifter clip inspection & replacement of lifters . There were a few C9 engine blocks that were manufactured with a casting defect , if let unchecked can result in lifter & camshaft failure .
This is some footage of a job at work that i carried out some time ago . Sorting out video / audio issues at the moment . I will be back to my usual content when the issues are resolved . Cheers .

Didn't know you did this kind of work, your just as methodical with this engine as you are doing machining work 👍just amazes us that those head bolts are that small, looks like our hotrod head bolts are larger than those but that head has about 4x the amount of bolts 🔩
Hello Max. It's nice to have the scale on the crane so you know how much force you're putting on the head. I worked at a mine in the underground shop back when I was a summer student. We had a twenty ton bridge crane and some of the guys were so ham fisted if they had forgot to remove a head bolt they would have had the tracks in the air before they realized it. Ken
Those steel anti rotation clips are a weak design. I occasionally see them fail in the Deere engines and cause big failures when they take out the cam, drop a valve wreck the head and tear up a piston. They really should have designed a more positive setup.
The updated ones are supposed to be stronger . Maybe they should have taken a leaf out of Detroit's book & used the solid guide bar that they use on the 2 strokes ! They must have changed the patterns for the block castings as this only effects a particular serial number range .
Interesting Max, were the faulty ones missed by quality the control inspectors on Friday afternoon at the manufacturers. I bet it makes a change working on a nice clean engine. Tony
Certain serial numbers had an error on the casting putting side load on the lifter clips . Un checked , the lifter clip would break & the lifter would rotate destroying the camshaft . We used a die grinder to re profile part of the casting as per Cat special instructions on other engines . This engine , the casting was ok but still had to be checked . Lifters supplied under warranty from Cat . 👍
A small come along is one of the handiest tools a mechanic can own Max. Not only for rigging as you show here, but bolt removal. Just this week I was removing the fuel tank open a 1959 D9 19A dozer. of course the factory way back then welded a bracket to where you could not access two of the tank bolts directly. With the cable control and blade rope sleeve assembly in the way. The only way I could get on the inner 3/4" bolt on the right hand side of the machine was with a short ratchet that would just squeeze in there. No way I could pull it. Small come along to the rescue. Setting it so I could pull on the end of the ratchet handle and hopefully not slip off it broke the bolt loose and I was able get it apart without resorting to extreme methods. Sounds like you were going to have a look into the steering clutches ! Funny , i still have a tiny piece of sprocket fragment in my leg from one of those , the last time i did a final drive seal back in the 80's ! 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop Close, having a peek at the brakes. Hmmm I'll be damned! I too had a fragment of sprocket stuck in my leg, miraculously it worked it's way out after a few years.

By force from the top . That sounds like the lifter bore may have to be bored & sleeved . I can not remember if they will come out the bottom . That may be an engine out & strip down by the sound of it . Check your serial number in case you can get a warranty claim if it is one of the ones with the blocks that have not been clearenced enough for the lifter clip .
@@swanvalleymachineshop it definitely has not been machined or clearanced. The hook Part of the lifter clip is gone/broken its the rest of the clip that snaps around the cam follower/lifter that we feel is keeping it from coming up and out. Next step is to pull the cam and oil pan and go from there.
I think they must have changed the cylinder block casting pattern . The old C9's did not have the problem . Our ones in 336D excavators that were new in 2013 or 2014 are the ones with the clearence issue .
I thought when you brought out the breaker bar it was going to be tighten till it strips and back off a quarter turn! This is the first time I have seen this tightening technique. Know about mikeing rod bolts on Lycoming Acft engines but haven’t seen the 1/2- loosen/ re-torque- 1/4 bit. Must work eh?
I think a kinder description would be "versatile". The "Jack of all trades" always carries the snide "master of none". From what we see, Max has an excellence ethic, together with a willingness to tackle work outside the "normal" narrow bounds of conventional trades. Long may he continue!
An interesting repair. The lift rigging as shown to the clearance was a particular to this type I took note of, as well as the inspection for fault. And as the job shown to re assembly, the care to clean surfaces and torque process. A very particular maintenance instruction key to the process. It was nice to see the unit back to operation. Ahh the yummy "C" Series CAT. Great while they're running but a ripe pain in the rear when something goes wrong. I think back how many times I've had to work over one of those while still hot. No wonder my hands have lost so much feeling. Memories Max.

@@swanvalleymachineshop Oh cool deal, def consider doing a video on the go pro 8 been looking at swapping over to that from the wife's old Cannon digital camera. The only issue we have with it is the battery life is only about 20-30 mins of shooting videos so its alot of stops and battery changes but we like the memory capacity of the 128GB SD cards and its awesome to not have to deal with storage on a device and the stupid cloud. So if the GP8 can boost SD storage and extend battery life I think Its worth the $300 so im excited to see what you think about it! Cheers
