In this video, we’ll look at 24 cat life hacks for cat owners to help give your pet better life and make things easier on you.
Prevent Hairballs in Cats
Simply add some fiber to your cat’s diet. Fiber improves the health of a cat’s coat and minimizes shedding. And remember to groom your cat regularly to remove excessive fur.
Help cats drink more water
Cats don't drink a lot of water by nature, but they need hydration to prevent bladder and kidney problems. Instead of giving them a water bowl, get them a pet water fountain to encourage them drink more water.
Catnips
Cats love catnip and most kitties get hyperactive in response to this plant. To cats, catnip serves as a sedative when consumed and a stimulator when smelled. Spray some catnip spray on your cat’s scratcher to increase your cat's interest in her scratching post.
Here are foods that cats shouldn’t eat.
Keep your cat off surfaces
If you have a new countertop or table that you don’t want your cat to get their claws on, simply cover the surface in aluminum foil. Cats hate the rustling sound that aluminum foil makes when they walk on it.
You can also cover the surface with a double-sided tape. Cats absolutely hate the feel of stickiness and will be repelled almost immediately.
Protect Your Plants
Cats tend to like to dig, chew and knock over your plants. To protect your plants, you can place popsicle sticks, tooth sticks, pinecones, stones on top of the plant’s soil. And remember, cats have a strong distaste for anything citrus. You can simply spray the leaves of your plant with citrus scent.
Other homemade repellents that cats hate are vinegar, citronella, pepper, and garlic.
Get rid of allergies and odors
Having a cat in the house can mean more odors, allergens and dander in the air.
Keep an air filter or purifier in your home to remove the airborne dander, dust and allergens.
Insurance for pets
Make sure to get your pet insured before it is too late.
Favorite Game
Make your home even interesting for your cat by installing a series of shelves that act as steps up the wall.
Get rid of litter box odor
Add some green tea leaves into your cat's litter box and it will help suppress bacteria growth and also absorb odors. You can also add a little bit of baking soda to the bottom of the litter pan to absorb odors.
Eliminate Urine Stains and Odors
Baking soda naturally neutralizes odors. If your cat has peed on your carpet, simply sprinkle some baking soda on the damp area or even an old urine stain, and then vacuum it up to remove the smell or stain completely. You can even apply some vinegar to the area to kill bacteria.
Food Puzzle
Cats love food puzzles. Make some holes in an empty water bottle, then fill the bottle with your cat’s favorite dry treat and give it to your cat to play.
Wrap your furniture legs with sisal
To protect your furniture from a frisky cat, tightly wrap some sisal rope around the legs of your kitchen or dining table.
Teach your cat
A common misconception about cats is that they cannot be trained.
Cats can indeed be taught certain behaviors with the promise of treats. For example, you can train your cat not to jump on your lovely leather couch.
Get rid of their hair on your furniture.
To remove cat hair from your carpet or sofa, simply put a pair of rubber gloves on and dampen them. Rub the gloves back and forth on your upholstery. This will cause the hair to ball up, and then you can remove the hair in one simple clump.
You can also place the sticky side of duct tape over the fabric. When you remove the duct tape, the hair will come up with it.
Leave your cat carrier out
Do you have trouble getting your cat into their carrier? Leave your carrier out and your pet will sniff it, lie inside it, and all around get used to it. This way, they won’t immediately associate it with getting a shot at the vet.
Litterbox Barrier
You can keep your dog from getting into the litter by elevating the box.
Bath Time
Use a sink instead of the bathtub to bathe your cat. The smaller space will make it easier to wash them.
Unrolling the toilet paper
Simply tuck in the loose paper in one end of the tube or spray your toilet and the area with a citrus scent to prevent your cat from unrolling the toilet paper.
Keep Ants Away
To deter ants from becoming interested in your cat’s food, simply use a chalk to draw a circle around your pet’s dish. Also, many essential oils like Eucalyptus, Thyme, Cinnamon or Peppermint are great, natural way to repel ants.
whisker stress
Eating too fast isn’t good for a cat’s digestive system. It can even cause a cat to throw up their food. To overcome this, put their food on a flat plate. This’ll help reduce your cat’s eating speed and prevent whisker stress which occurs when a cat’s whiskers rub against the sides of their food bowl.
Pheromone diffuser
Cats don’t like change. If you are moving homes or adopting a new cat, buy some pheromone diffuser to help your cat adjust to the new environment.

That's really nice, but my tomcat doesn't like sauce in its food, he likes one Brand, half and half, bits and mush, without sauce. But I'm happy that he drinks much, because I have at each corner which he tends to run through, a water bowl, so he runs through a door, see the bowl and thinks "oh well yeah it's time to take a dip and then off we go". I've at least 4-6 water bowls. And never near the food. The water bowls are down at the floor, while the food is at some cabinets to climb, they love it like that. Like some leopards climbing a tree with prey.

If you wrap your furniture in sisal you’ll actually be teaching your cat to scratch the furniture & rewarding them for it. Not to mention the sisal will deplete as they scratch it until they’re literally clawing away at said furniture
@ScarlettNyxx
@ScarlettNyxx 2 года назад
I was thinking the same thing. Cats need to scratch. There are plenty of different sized scratchers. If your house is too small for any of them, it's probably too small for a cat.
@ITGirlll
@ITGirlll 2 года назад
@Merlinde Brink 2 issues with that: 1) Cat is still being taught to claw at something it shouldn't. 2) You are now also mangling your own furniture by constantly wrapping an abrasive product around it and stapling into it so that the abrasive product is hopefully secure and in turn wears away at the finish on the furniture as the cat depletes the sisal. This is then repeated as you continue to replace the sisal destroying your furniture further.
@tomokosavelyeva4085
@tomokosavelyeva4085 2 года назад
If you provide good cat scratchers in a comfortable places for a cat it will leave your furniture alone. It's their nature, they don't do it out of spite. I made a table for myself and it's legs is covered in sysal. BEST DECISION EVER. So comfortable and everyone is happy. So it's up to you if you want to have additional cat furniture around or you just combine.
@gretski47
@gretski47 2 года назад
Also with cats there's vertical scratchers and horizontal. My last kitty wouldn't use any scratches and it drive me crazy, until one day I accidentally knocked a flat one over. He immediately scratched on it and I realised he was a horizontal scratcher. Older or ill cats may not like stretching up to a vertical, but will use a horizontal scratcher. So try that if your kitty won't use the upright scratchers

Two years ago I bought a feral cat that was brought back several times. You see I wanted one that no one wanted. Sux months we knew she was there because if the bell in her collar. Then she caught a mouse and laid it by my bed, a present in which I gave her dental treats; does double duty. I can go on and on about how she learned & we learned. Always had domestic never feral. I learned to watch RU-vid videos especially how they train wild cats. I can attest how intelligent they are. When EliMae was not nice I told her to go to your room. Took several times but now she goes automatically, that is her time out. Time out to calm down & be in a safe space when alone time is needed. I have taught her to come, up (jump on bed), bye bye, good morning, ect. Also one of the things we like the most is to say good morning by tilting up our chin to each other, slow blink is for hugs. In fact I can talk, tilt my chin up add slow blinks and she automatically purrs heavy & loud no touching required. I can say there are so many things we learned but one if the best is trust. Trust that when she does not want pets you will stop. The ability to have some say over your life gives her confidence though she does not need it. She's an alpha alpha. But we went from zero to ten in two years. The rescue organization we bought her from asked if we still wanted her after 6-8 weeks. Really??? I received & refuse to give back even though I have not seen much of her. Now she is my lap cat, my bed fellow & my companion. What more does one need? Oh did I forget to say she is entertaining & laughable???
@mistyculous9644
@mistyculous9644 2 года назад
I'd love to see you do a series of videos about how you train your cat to do something additional other than what you mentioned. People need examples of using positive reinforcement - which is what works best to train a cat.
@witchhunt5781
@witchhunt5781 2 года назад
@@mistyculous9644 I agree. Positive reinforcement works for most children and animals. I really think I lucked out with my EliMae. She is the smart one. I train my cats with dental goodies. Train when they are ready. Train simply. And if it doesn't work then try a different approach. Cats are different than dogs they know if you do not like them. And really all I want in a cat is companionship; their personality, characteristics, and intelligence. I don't want a train cat. EliMae needed to learn to "be nice", "go to your room", "come", "jump". Simple commands. But then again she & I are not perfect. She is feral so when she does something I let her know she's my girl. Like she come under my bed sheets to sleep with me. Once. But she will do it again. And I will give it a name like, "under" to associate her action. But thinking about it we will be shamed...she is a pleasantly plump cat and there will be haters I am sure. We try but we are just built that way. lol

If your cats won’t use fountain and don’t drink enough water, add some warm water to a bit of wet food. Mix to gravy like (or so) consistency. A couple of my cats will actually leave food pieces in the bowl- but all liquid is always consumed. This is GREAT for male cats who tend to get UTIs with crystals. These infections are extremely painful (crystals have sharp edges that cut flesh that the urine then stings) and can be deadly. Had a cat get sick on a Saturday night and die at the vet Monday morning. IF your cat is offered Covina injectable antibiotic, pay the extra money for it! If they have an infection and an antibiotic is not offered… ASK why.

Re: eating on a flat plate. That's good but try elevating it. One of my cats was constantly vomiting and while there can be many causes ( I tried dozens of changes over a year's time ) this particular cat's issue was solved by elevating the plate. After that I built little stands for all of my cats. They now eat from a 4" high box that's tilted at a slight angle and I noticed a real change in all of them. Even previously finicky eaters were now more willing to eat simply because their trachea wasn't always bent down.

I tried to use it to stop my cat from climbing into my mattress box. It freaked her out a couple of times, but then she ignored it. Similarly, using double sided tape on the edge of the one piece of furniture she scratches (ottoman) worked one or twice, until she just pulled it off with her teeth 🤷‍♀️ Fortunately neither of these are a big deal because she rarely goes in the box spring anymore (and she usually came out when I called her, anyway) and she doesn’t scratch the ottoman if I cover it with a blanket. But yeah it is funny to me that those two oft-repeated hacks are myths, at least anecdotally. Although the first time she encountered both foil and tape she FREAKED which was funny because she’s usually a really calm and brave. Another hack that doesn’t work for me is keeping the crate out. I’ve had her crate out since I adopted her. At first she’d sleep in it occasionally, but since I took her to the vet NO MORE. She’ll sniff it occasionally but never goes inside, and it can be really challenging to get her inside. Also she pees in her carrier 75% of the time. And it’s not like she always goes to the vet - usually we go to my parents house, and she LOVES being at my parents house because it’s quiet (they live in the country), the room she stays in has a wonderful window/sill and is carpeted, and she gets a ton of attention and treats. She just hates being in her carrier!!! She meows crazily unless I have one hand petting her the whole time....

I learned this the hard way. I use Young Living oils and I found that citrus caused my cat to leave the room. Because cats are so sensitive to them I always have one room with nothing defused in it so the cat can have her mojo too. I never use any oils on my cat without seeing a vet first for advice. The pure ones I use can sometimes get my cat to avoid me if I have it on me in any way because they are too condensed for cats to process.

A LOT of essential oils, including peppermint, are highly toxic to cats. Chamomile and jasmine are two that are safe but you should talk to your vet and/or research before using any essential oil, even in a diffuser, if you have a cat in your home. Onion, black pepper and garlic are also highly toxic to cats and should never be used around our feline family members. #FosteringSavesLives #StayHomeAndFoster #AdoptDontShop #TinyButMighty

@@libbyggs1930 Squirt bottle can be effective in training cats. Another training aid is a "rattle can." Take an empty aluminum can (soft drink, beer), rinse it out, let it dry. Add some metal washers (or small screws/nuts; or a few pennies), between 5 and 10, usually will do. Then when the cat is doing something annoying toss the "rattle can" so it falls near them (don't throw AT the cat!). They hate the sound and will eventually associate the noise with the behavior and/or location. It takes patience. (Back in the day when "beaded curtains" were popular in a opening to a hall, I managed to train a cat to not even touch the strings of beads (he'd squat down to walk under them).) My current cats are fascinated with packing-box tape. If they can get to the dispenser, they'll bite at and chew the tail end of the tape...

About ants and chalk around food dishes - chalk on cat paws becomes chalk in the cat's mouth either from a cat that likes removing their dry food from the dish and eating it from the floor or just cleaning themselves with the paws they tracked thru the chalk. Lightly smear olive oil on the floor around the bowl. You don't need much, less than you'd use on a cookie sheet covering a distance maybe an inch or two. Ants don't like it. I found regular vegetable oil doesn't really work but extra virgin olive oil is impenetrable to ants.
