Hot tip, the pine pellets in popular cat litters like Feline Pine are the same as the ones they use for horses. If you have a farm supply store, the horse pellets are way cheaper!! I run a cat rescue and use Dry Den personally, $7.50/40lbs
We use the horse pellet bedding for cat litter at the vet clinic I work at and it is definitely a lot cheaper. I've started using it at home and I'll never go back

You can get natural plant based pellots from any tractor supply shop and get a LOT of it for REALLY cheap! I get the horse bedding pellots and my cat honestly loves that i dont have to clean litter out of her paws anymore(shes a litter grabber and it gets stuck since she enjoys digging and digging hard, so a lot of clay based litter got trapped in between her paw pads and she hated that)
Out of curiosity how well does it hide smell and can your cats bury with it? I’m currently using a scent-free clay litter that hides the smell really well, I also have two cats who are obsessive about their stuff being buried (like if they can still see it they will not stop trying.) I wouldn’t mind switching products especially if it’s more beneficial in the long run, but the only pellet-litter products I’ve used is when my cats have had surgery to prevent litter from getting in their wounds and it definitely upset my babies haha
@@Justyouraveragechaosenjoyer it covers the smell really well, and i break the pellets up a bit more to make it easier for my girl to burry with it by crunching it in my hands. The pellets also smell so good on their own!
@@Justyouraveragechaosenjoyer of course! I know how expensive normal litter can be, and you can get the same weight in bedding pellots for way less. I got, like, 30 pounds of it for a little over $6 at a tractor supply shop when that much in normal litter would be at LEAST $30 in my area.
I want a robotic litter box but I’m always scared their lil tails or feet will somehow get stuck in the moving parts of the robot. One of my cats only has 3 legs so she can’t afford to lose any more limbs 😅
They’re generally safe to cats, but I discourage using robots because it’s really important that you actually see the poop! Cats are masters at hiding pain, so their bowel movements can be the first indicator that something is wrong, but you won’t know if it’s automatically swept away
@@karinagutierrez7134 I can definitely still see the poop in my automatic litter box. It gets collected in a separate compartment I have to empty around once a week and I always check for abnormalities. I wouldn't get one with rakes, because those can destroy the poop. Mine turns to filter the waste. I invested in one that tells me if the cats spend more time than usual on the toilet or if the toilet needs more cleaning than usual so I can check in on them. I can also tell if they are not using it, because it counts daily potty times.
I highly recommend a stainless steel litter box and walnut shell litter. My cat’s litter box smells like nothing, the walnut litter clumps beautifully, and it’s a similar texture to clay (he wasn’t a fan of the pellets). Yay for happy cats!
Yesss! I have the walnut as well bcus my cats didn’t like the pellets. Our litter box has never smelled better. Can’t smell pee at all. Good idea on the stainless steel… I’ll have to look into that
@alita8900 the brand I get (naturally fresh) is $25 for a 26 lb bag (I think) on Amazon! But it also lasts longer than clay litter so I buy it much less frequently.
we tried walnut litter and it didnt absorb like ANY smell at all- do you know a good brand or the best way to use it? id much prefer to have a natural one but my mom works at home close to their litterbox and cannot handle any smell at all.
Pine pellets don't always work. I had cats that did not like it and then decided to use the bathroom elsewhere. If you also have this problem switch back to clay litter.
Somehow I always found them to smell so harsh when they piss on it. It 100 times worse than the other one she showed. Well, at least it makes you clean it immediately 😅 Btw, now I’m not using any filler, so I just clean it the second cat did it things and everyone seems to be happy and my cats paws stops being biohazard weapon
I read cats don't like big changes. If they are used to a different litter, it's better to mix the new stuff in slowly with what they already use so they don't get confused. Eventually you use less and less of the old stuff in the box. Most bags of little have this in the instructions if you're switching.
Be careful when putting baking soda, when it mixes with the ammonia in the pee it can react and potential release gas that can cause respiratory problems Im not a vet, so please take this advice with a pound of salt :)
Nope. I'll take it whole grain. It's waaay better to be safe and you are RIGHT in that it could potentially release GASES that could cause breathing problems (for both the cats and the humans in the house.) I have ADHD, so I really understand how straining it can be to make yourself do things, but it's honestly SO much better to just clean your cat's litter more often to avoid the stink. Also, if your cat's litter smells so bad you need to use something to cover up the smell? My lord you need to change that, like immediately
I mean, comparing open box to shut box behaviour with our cats, I'd say they don't care, but that's probably because it's what they're used to mostly (and bcuz the top and side of the lid has a lot of ventilation, so the smell doesn't get stuck or anything)
No last time I tried changing up my cat's litter to a different kind she dumped it out of her litter box and then pooped right beside the litter box in protest. My precious feline is very particular about things she likes and doesn't like and if she doesn't like something she's going to let you know
There are different pont based litters. My cats hated some of them but loved others. If you want to switch to plant based litter (it’s better for your cat AND for the environment! Clay litter is awful for nature), you can give her a second litter box with the new litter. If she starts using it, you can switch over, otherwise you can donate the leftover bag to your local shelter and try a different kind/brand. There are so many, I tried like 10 at this point and my cats only liked 3!

I’ve tried the pellets- stunk way worse and my cat pooped outside the litter box, which she had never done before. Great if it works for some cat owners, but I much prefer the normal kind.. and so does my cat. The pellets are significantly cheaper, so I wish it worked for us.. but nope
I’ve always used pellets. The clumping litter is so expensive lol. I’ve only used one bag of Pretty Litter the second month I had my new cat just to try out. It would get in his paws and leave a trail out the litter box. Never again lol. I get tractor supply pine litter, it’s amazing and it’s only $6 for a 40lb bag!
Not expensive lol I buy clay litter at the tractor store very cheap. Clumping is vital or it smells like cat piss after a week. You go through it wayyy faster than clay litter. Also much messier.
Honestly at the shelter I work at we use pellets and at home I use clay litter and clay is 100 times easier to clean up and doesn’t smell. Mine isn’t expensive at all and a lot of cats find pellet litter uncomfy and it can cause them to pee outside the box
@@whatever3145 I switch from clay litter to pellets and I love it so much more and so do my cats. The key with pellets is making sure you have a box that has a sifting tray so the dissolved pellets can fall down. Personally I'd never go back to clay litter.
The type of litter you recommend sucks when you go to clean it. The clay litter will fall through the scooper so you only discard the poop. But what you recommend is too large to fall through the gaps so you can’t easily sift through it. If the gaps are too big then obviously the poop will just fall too.
@@aylaandersen isn’t it expensive to go through litter that fast? And also annoying to constantly replace? The sand litter can last a long time without needing to be replaced.
As a person who takes ceramics in high school, the first thing the teacher said was to not spread clay dust by clapping hands or flapping boards, as the fine clay dust can stay in the air for up to 3 days, and breathing large amounts into your lungs can cause severe permanent health issues
be careful abt which robotic litter box you get, the one that spins upside down to get the poop out can confuse cats and deter them from using it bc the smells move around the box so much. i don’t think every cat feels that way but i’ve heard it’s a common complaint
You also need to have one litterbox per cat plus one. So if you have three cats, you should have 4 litter boxes. Of course, that changes if you have a litterrobot. But that's just a general rule of thumb from a vet tech.
@@froggy5748 I've had him for 8 years... 6 of those years was spent with my other cat that was rescued with him at their last home (not related to each other) she always used the litterbox cause she was an indoor cat. He used it more back then, but only after she used it after it was cleaned... (He didn't really miss her that much when she died because they didn't really get along well) I think it's just that he's a boy... He also goes in other people's lawns, where it's visible for them to see Edit- he will dig a hole, go in that hole, and then leave it unburied...
Don't get the robotic ones guys!!! There have been many videos and stories lately how cats have gone to heaven because the robotic doors close on them while they're getting in/out. Less robotic the better.
It’s crazy but a lot of owners only clean their cat’s litter box every few days or sometimes once a week! I’m like you’re telling me your cat literally goes pee and poop inside your home and you don’t clean it daily?no wonder you’re whole house smells like a litter box Karen!😂
It’s crazy to me tbh. I can’t imagine cleaning it less than daily, ESPECIALLY with more than one cat. I have five cats (with six litter boxes) and every single one gets cleaned daily. Not only does it stink if you miss a day (due to absentmindedness, being too busy, being sick, whatever) but it also is just a pain for the cats
If your cat is declawed, it needs a soft litter for its tender paws or it will be in too much pain to use litter box. Also pine pellets will absorb the smell but will keep it with it, meaning if you remove all the pine litter from your box then the box wont smell but the litter will still smell. Its kinda weird that way. I couldn’t smell a thing on that box even with my nose an inch away from it when I temporarily took the litter out of it.
If your cat is declawed, you don’t deserve a cat (unless it’s a rescue that was already declawed) Declawing is horrendous and incredibly painful for the cat, not just immediately after the procedure but for the rest of its life. It’s basically like if i cut off your toes, your feet won’t work right. It’s like making a cat walk around on its knuckles Tldr; declawing is unethical, if you’re considering it, don’t get a cat.

Aww so cute! I found a squirrel in my backyard and me and my sibling nursed it in till it was ready to be released in the wild but he loves to stop by every day to hang out and get some peanuts from us.
Actually the plant litterbox isn't much better than the small square one. Either get a stainless steel box or buy a cement mixing tray to use as a litterbox. I bet your cats would prefer either of those to that plant litterbox thing.
1. Sand is actually the best litter for cats because it's the closest to what they'd use in the wild. I'm surprised no one has mentioned sand. Probably the cheapest litter there is and most cats will have no issues adjusting to using it. 2. DO NOT USE BAKING SODA. The baking soda will raise the pH levels of the ammonia in the used litter and will only increase the amount of ammonia being released; which means the litter will smell even more! Baking soda mixed into litter makes more dust and this can be very harmful if the cat breathes it in or ingests it. Some cats are very sensitive to baking soda and can get irritation. 3. If you're concerned about smells, just remove the lid! The more airflow, the better. Removing the lid also gives kitty more space to move around.
Yeah I was going to say, a lot of cats get freaked out by covered litter boxes because they feel vulnerable not being able to see all around them. As both predators and prey animals, it’s just instinct to be wary of where you’d do your business!

My parents use wood pellets since they bulk buy them for the biomass boiler. They still make a mess and smell. They’re not like some miracle cat litter

A warning about baking soda: some people and cats are sensitive to it on their skin, especially when it's wet or with repeated exposure. So just pay attention for rashes on your cat or your cat scratching more than usual
Get different litter. Your cat probably isn’t scared of it. It’s probably hurting her. It’s likely uncomfortable on her paws and that’s why she won’t use it. (Had the same issue with my cats)
Yes to natural litter!!! I use pine pellets that is advertised as livestock bedding from tractor supply. I get a HUGE bag that lasts me well over a month for like $15. AND it covers the smell way better. The only ‘bad’ thing is it doesn’t clump so it doesn’t work with auto sifting litter boxes.
I personally swear by the newspaper pellet stuff. Not all cats will use it but that stuff works so well. Also a good way to clean up liquid spills (especially of the biological variety)
I used the same exact pellets for my guinea pig. They sell it in pet stores, but you can also get them in hardware store for a fraction of the cost, and bigger amounts too

Cats don't usually like the covered boxes since they feel like a corner they can get trapped in, especially if you have more than one pet. They like to have multiple points of entry and exit, and on top of that, covered boxes make them crouch down which isn't a comfortable bathroom pose for them. The robot boxes are terrible because it is possible for a cat to set them off while still inside which will obviously be traumatizing and pretty much guarantee that the cat will never use that box, or any other covered box again
I use Pretty Litter, not because of the health gimmicks but because my cat likes the texture and I've found it to be super odor resistant. I wanted to love the pine litter but my cat would rather have used the floor than it, and I'm allergic to clay dust. I personally have the perfect corner in my apartment that is out of the way and central for the box.
My cat has a litter box technically but we haven’t used it in years except for trips because she’s an outdoor indoor kitty and poops outside. She only uses the litter box when we go on trips that we don’t need to get a house sitter for.
Covered litter boxes can lead to problems if you have multiple cats. If one cat tends to bully another, a covered litter box can lead to the victim avoiding the box alltogether because they don't want to get ambushed. Since robot litterboxes always have a cover, they come with the same issue, and they can also spook your cat, if they start their cycle just as the cat was approaching the litter box to do do its business, leading to the cat avoiding the box altogether. When it comes to litter boxes, simplicity is king and having the litterbox on full display is just the price of having furry friends.
pine pellets + a sifting litterbox (not a robot, just a box with holes on top of a box without holes) has completely changed the game for me. all the sawdust falls through when you shake it and you can catch it all in a trash bag then quickly scoop the poop. takes half the time of clay litter with half the mess and WAY less tracking. im just lucky my cats don't mind the pellets, i know some cats' paws are too sensetive
this is funny - my cat refuses to go to the bathroom on anything non clumping. when i switched his cat litter to pellets he would pee in my bed multiple times a day every single day until I switched his litter to clumping. plus it's so much easier to clean up and doesn't hold the smell like pellets do. more cost efficient too. if you're looking for some good clumping biodegradeble cat litter go for wheat! catsan is my favorite.
Yes!!! CatSan is the best!!! I've been using them for ages, didn't even think about buying gross pellets. My friend uses them and he has to dump out the entire box every day, he goes through his filling so fast. I only have to scoop out the clumps of pee and done. I last like 2 months with one bag and I clean the litter box every day❤
To make things easier in our apartment, one of the closets in the corner is the perfect size to fit the litter box on mat , and any overhead shelving is then best used to store all the stuff for taking care of kitty! Then everything is in one place and it’s like she has her own bathroom : )
For those in doubt, pine pellets smell WAY better than any normal litter. Used pine pellets forever and when I smelled my friend's normal litter my nose literally burned.
