Brick and Skipper had an honest to goodness friendship, two genuine buds. Maggie was envious of their relationship, so she connived to seduce skipper by accusing him of having sexual affections for Brick. To prove her wrong, Skipper had sex with her, violating Brick's trust in him. Maggie was a common bitch who destroyed a great friendship between two straight men. When Skipper called Brick to confess his affair with Maggie, Brick felt violated on many fronts, and chose to detach himself from the betrayal of friendship by Skipper and the betrayal of love by his wife, Maggie. Brick felt responsible for Skipper's suicide, as he never gave it a chance to restore his friendship with Skipper, so he was disgusted with himself. He also felt disgusted with Maggie for the damage she caused, thus his ardent refusal to show her any tender affection.
Brick and Skipper were really good friends. Brick thought they had such a true friendship that it was rare, but only that: a true friendship. Maggie could see that there was something more, that Skipper was in love with Brick. So, when Brick was in the hospital, she confronted Skipper about his true feelings for Brick. She asked him to either leave them alone to be happy together or make his feelings known to Brick and see what would happen. Skipper tried to convince her and himself that he was straight and slept with her. But it actually made him (and Maggie) realize that he was in love and attracted to Brick. So he got drunk and called Brick and confessed his feelings (and the fact that he slept with Maggie). Brick was disappointed (or couldn't make himself say how he was feeling - that part is not clear in the play and that is interesting) and he just hung up on Skipper. Skipper killed himself and now Brick cannot deal with the fact that he wasn't there for Skipper. He also blames Maggie, but he actually blames himself more than anyone else.
This is so bad it's cringe worthy. RJ is so bad as Brick he's at the level of a soap opera actor. And nobody (and I mean nobody!) could play Big Daddy after Burl Ives. Olivier's attempts at a southern accent are dismal.
