I just subbed last night. Its 2:43 in the morning here, not sure what time zone you're in but I appreciate you man. I am very much liking your content. You are a great human being. You make me want to be better which is one of the best compliments I can give. I love your vibe and attitude as well as your true appreciation of great music. I'm so glad I found your channel. I plan on binging your videos and I would recommend you to anyone. Thanks for coming into my life. I truly feel like we are hanging our when I watch you
I'd forgotten how much this song meant to me as a young teen. Little has changed since he first released this song, it did change for a while, now we are back sliding all around the world. As long as I have a breath in me, I have hope but it sure is mighty hard sometimes. Love to all and be at peace by showing others peace.
The opening is how we all felt in the 70's...We felt we had rounded the corner and were heading toward a peaceful world filled with love and empathy...How disappointing to see the current state...
Exactly! I was 24 in 1976. I thought WE had finally brought the world together, accomplished something beautiful and loving. Who knew all we had done was chase the haters underground where they would wait for decades for their dog whistle. I'm SO disappointed, including at my own naivete.
@@bobpadrick7718 Self disappointment and naivete can really effect us at the subconscious level...You begin to ponder whether you've EVER been right about ANYTHING!...The awakening was the worst part...The ultimate fury that has no outlet...These assholes that run the circus need some suffering...Good Health and freedom to you and yours!
I was SO saddened when he “disappeared” from the music scene!!! Glad he’s back, but what did we miss out because of his “conversion”? We’ll never know, but maybe in an alternate universe next to ours they had even greater songs/albums by Cat Stevens...... 🤔
@@skwrttj ..true but hard to blame him really.. I've worked in and around the music biz since 80's and it is chock full of assholes... especially for those who are the money makers like he was... you become a blood supply machine for sneaky vampires... horrible atmos for anyone who is sensitive to "right / wrong"
The LP is called "Tea For The Tillerman" it's phenomenal. Like the whole thing. Also his name is Yusuf Islam now and I think he has new-ish music after decades away
The lyrics. Now I've been happy lately Thinking about the good things to come And I believe it could be Something good has begun Oh, I've been smiling lately Dreaming about the world as one And I believe it could be Someday it's going to come 'Cause I'm on the edge of darkness There ride the Peace Train Oh, Peace Train take this country Come take me home again Now I've been smiling lately, Thinkin' about the good things to come And I believe it could be, Something good has begun Oh Peace Train sounding louder Glide on the Peace Train Come on now Peace Train Yes, Peace Train holy roller Everyone jump upon the Peace Train Come on now, Peace Train Get your bags together, Go bring your good friends, too 'Cause it's getting nearer, It soon will be with you Now come and join the living, It's not so far from you And it's getting nearer, Soon it will all be true Oh Peace Train sounding louder Glide on the Peace Train Come on now Peace Train Peace Train Now I've been crying lately, Thinkin' about the world as it is Why must we go on hating, Why can't we live in bliss 'Cause out on the edge of darkness, There rides a Peace Train Oh Peace Train take this country, Come take me home again Oh Peace Train sounding louder Glide on the Peace Train Come on now, Peace Train Yes, Peace Train holy roller Everyone jump upon the Peace Train Come on, come on, come on Yes, come on, peace train Yes, it's the peace train Come on now, peace train Oh, peace train
There's no such thing as a bad Cat Stevens song! This used to be one of my favorites! Cat Stevens was and still is all about peace and love! Thank you for reacting, Jamel!
@@vansongs He didn't call for Rushdie's death. He was asked about the fatwa by the media and he said that the Q'uran calls for the death of anyone who defames the prophet.
Jamel this could be your theme song cuz you just want us all to be good humans. ❤️❤️❤️ What a beautiful thought, to ride the peace train with our brothers and sisters, ALL our brothers and sisters. ❤️❤️❤️
This came out 50 years ago when we thought things were getting better. What happened? Seems we have a lot more learning about how to accept and love one another. Let's keep trying!
Yeah - 50 years ago was 1971. Hard to believe that much time has passed. At that time we were protesting the Vietnam War and for women's rights/equality and civil rights for minorities and to save the planet (had the 1st Earth Day in '70). Guess what...............!!! Oh well, at least we got out of Vietnam 4 years later in '75 (another messy exit). I guess we haven't learned much. History keeps repeating itself.
This song stayed on the radio, seems like forever, and no one got tired of it. Still brings a smile to my face everytime I hear it. Of course, as always you need to hear the studio version...It's truly a classic!
''I've been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is. ''This performance is from 1976, the song is from the fall of 1971. (Vietnam, war resistance, coming off the sixties. By 1976 the world as it was saw that things were smoothing out and it was calmer in general.
Singer/songwriters like Cat Stevens and Donovan come along once in a generation, they're like real-life holy men. I agree on how great this song and 'Morning Has Broken' are but they did get overplayed back in the '70s. I wish more people had listened to the meaning of the songs. "Tea for the Tillerman" for me is a top 10 must-own album. Cat had a string of great albums back then before he decided to give up music for a more religious life and became a Muslim. He really is one of the best humans on the planet, he walked the walk.
@@joannmerver ...me too!!! 😸. I can listen to them repeatedly as well.... in fact, I was listening to them today as I had my dog out for her run with my mobility scooter... both as well as 800+ albums on my iPhone and Bose Bluetooth Micro in my shirt pockets... cranked LOUD! 😂
I was a Sophomore in high school when this song and Melanie's Candles in the Rain were on the radio. I had most of Cat Steven's albums by Jumior year in college: Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman, Teaser and the Fire Cat, Catch Bull at Four, Foreigner, and Buddha and the Chocolate Box. Such fond memories. Thanx!
Buddah and the Chocolate Box was the first Cat Stevens album l bought, not quite as good as Teaser and the Firecat or Tea for the Tillerman. It feels to me though that the album is a little 'edgier' which is no bad thing, C-79 has always been one of my favourites of his.
Glad someone mentioned Mona Bone Jakon! A lot of great songs (for instance, Trouble) were on that album and were featured in the cult classic movie Harold & Maude.
Hearing Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam), brings back memories from my college days, but also is forever associated in my mind with the movie Harold and Maude (1971). If you haven't seen it, you should.
Harold and Maude is a classic! I must have seen it 5 times. I was in high school when it came out and my friends and I had such a crush on Bud Cort (I think that's his name????).
Such a beautiful song, yet I hear it and despair. Music used to be a powerful medium, and so many artists tried to get the messages through, and while so many heard it, so many more didn't. That's where we are now. Thank you Jamel, for not only keeping great music alive, but delivering those messages once again in the hope that someone listens.
He was born Stephen Demetri Georgiou to a Swedish mother and a Greek father, was baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church, and attended Catholic Schools. This was the last song he ever sang as Cat Stevens. After this encore song, he unplugged his guitar, walked off stage, left the music industry, converted to Islam, changed his name to Yusef Islam, married, and raised a family. He returned around 2011.
the music business is a dirty business. he was probably too sensitive to keep going and found solace in his own way elsewhere. just listen to the lyrics
I believe he tried to return to the US not long after 9/11 but his name, Yusef Islam, was on a list of suspected anti-Americans (terrorists) and he was incarcerated for a period of time until he was identified as the former Cat Stevens and released. Please correct me on the facts. I'm sure it was something like that. Imagine THAT man being a terrorist! NO WAY
@@kevlarV2rocketRSV Do a quick search for 'Yusuf Islam comments about Salman Rushdie.' There is nothing peaceful and loving about this man. These comments were made years before 9/11 and made me lose all respect for the man. Great music, horrible person. He publicly expressed support for the death fatwah against Rushdie. When given the chance to retract or clarify, he amended that while he personally wouldn't kill Rushdie unless he were directed to by a religious authority, Rushdie did in fact deserve to be killed for his perceived blasphemy. When protesters against Rushdie burned an effigy of Rushdie, Yusuf Islam lamented that it was only an effigy and that he wished it had been the actual man being burned. There's your "Peace Train" for you. Think of THAT every time you hear his songs.
About 5 years ago, I had not listened to Cat/Yusuf in probably 40 years when I put a full album on RU-vid. After all that time, I knew which song was coming next. I couldn't have told you before a song was done what was going to be next. His music is ingrained in my soul!
In 1976 we thought there would finally be peace and an end to hating when the older generations passed on. Now we're the older generation and nothing has changed. It's enough to make you wonder about humanity. "Just be a good human" - wish we all could do that.
He just released a children's book called Peace Train. It's literally just the lyrics with beautiful illustrations. My 5yo son has it and reads it all the time. ❤✌🚂
I was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned the children's illustrated book before commenting. It's a beautiful addition to any library, not just a child's.
This song is so special to me . I heard if for the first time when watching Remember the Titans with my dad... As deep as that movie was, It has always stuck with me. and now at 29 with an 8yr old son this really resonates with me and everything going .
Ten Thousand Maniacs led by the amazing Natalie Merchant have an amazing cover of Peace Train. You should try Like the Weather, These Are Days or Because the Night. Natalie had a very successful solo career with songs like Jealousy and Carnival.
@@Inter53 I wouldn't say loads of top 10 hits, in the US and UK I think the highest was 8... which was surprising to me considering how many songs he's released and his popularity. I would definitely say he had loads of top 40 hits. As for #1 albums, that made me curious so I just checked Wiki. That surprised me too! Teaser and the Firecat was #1 only in Australia, #2 everywhere else. Catch Bull at Four was his only #1 in the US, and was also #1 in Canada and Australia. Greatest Hits was #1 in Canada. That's pretty much it for #1's. Crazy, isn't it!?!?! Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Rolling Stones pretty much kept him from peaking at #1 with his most successful albums in the 70's. His label would released his albums typically a week or two before the bands I just mentioned. What is a testament to how loved his music is, his albums from the early 70's are all triple platinum. Pretty much all his albums are either gold or platinum. I think I saw 1 silver. I analyze data professionally, so I sometimes geek out on 'fun' stuff like this.
@@scapito hey Stacy great analysis but I have to say having #5 top ten hits in the US also having 4 albums in the top #3 in a row , and similar chart positions all over including 3 albums hitting no.1 in different place around the world including one in US ,active for only around 10 years, still selling over 60 million albums that is rather impressive
See brother Cat had the simple revelation that so many of us miss....the revelation that we are all brothers and sisters, one family misguided and divided....and....it does NOT...have to be that way. PEACE🕊
Aw, thanks so much. I was hoping for this song next. This song still gives me goose bumps. Oh, man we had so much hope at the end of the 60's. Still have it.
I remember when this song came out. The war(Vietnam), Civil Rights . This song came out at the right time. Love this song., it came out at the right time. God bless Cat Steven's, Namaste Jamal, please play My Sweet Lord, George Harrison.
Thanks Jamel, I would also enjoy tea for the tillerman, and father and son..It's great to hear these old songs again, especially with someone who hasn't heard them, and can appreciate great music.
,My sister and I used to own almost every cat Stevens album created. he was fantastic and we loved him. Try Father and Son. My mother always said she wanted father and son played at her funeral; it's a beautiful song. Now she says she doesn't want a funeral, but when she passes I will be playing and singing Father and Son.
Thank you Jamel! I never experienced this version of "Peace Train"until today. The passion and intensity of the performance was extraordinary. As I often say to my friends, "Ya just gotta mean it!" Play your music. Tell your truth. Make your statement. The fame and the money will come in good time. God Bless what you do. Catch you on the Peace Train...
You have to feel this song not just hear it. The beat of the song makes you feel like your in a train. Funny how he was sad at the world in 1970s. Now we look fondly at the 70s compared to the shit hole we live in now. Great job as always J-man.
yep. "I've been cryin' lately thinkin' about the world as it is". The more things change the more they stay the same. We all need to find the peace train...NOW. Thank you, Jamel. Always liked Cat. Peace out, my brother.
Teaser and the Firecat. My mom had this album. She didn't have a lot of pop artist albums and I almost never heard her play them but I heard this one. I still have almost the whole album memorized. Also, I love 10,000 Maniacs' version of "Peace Train". One of Western NY's own!
I agree about playing this song on loudspeaker and also The O'Jays 'Love Train'. God bless you Jamel, your followers and those who have lost loved ones on 9/11. God Bless America and the world.
Played Teaser and the Firecat album again the other day. I was reminded once more of how wonderful this album is. The songs are so strong and demonstrate how talented Cat Stevens was in the early 70's. Superb!
Thank you Jamel for reminding me of this song,I remember buying the album Tea For The Tillerman Loved it then Love it now. I think it's past due to play this again. Who new that it would still be relevant today. Peace Brother🙏❤️
Jamel- Cat Stevens' songs were used as the soundtrack for one of the greatest cult classic movies of all time "Harold And Maude"(1971)- an absolute must see....Peace Train came out in 1976- the yr I graduated from High School(Seattle)- and this was all just before Cat Stevens cashed it all in and sold all his guitars- changed his name- and religion and didn't play secular music again till 2006....I'm so glad he's back...Wayne Maher - Auburn, Wa.(State)
For me, Father and Son is his most moving song, and maybe one of the most emotional songs I’ve ever heard … but maybe it’s because I have daddy issues lol.
This guy is heard. You can put it on classic rock stations, even in the South, and he is played, and sang along to as well. Heck. Yeah. Try Tuesdays Dead. Real raw from Cat.
Remember hearing this as a kid and wanting to get on that train. Sounded like it would take you to a better place. We need that train now! Cat was a great artist!
Cat Stevens "Tea For The Tillerman" was the Album that I listened to most in 1976 , along with "Queens" Night At The Opera" "Father And Son", "Hardheaded Woman" , and "Wild World" , were the ones that I was the effected by the most .
So many great albums in the early 70's, Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were certainly two of them. Buddha and the Chocolate was the first Cat Stevens album l bought, l feel it has an 'edgier' feel to it. C-79 is one of my favourite songs of his, and of course the beautiful Oh Very Young.
Thank you so much for reviewing this song Jamel. This song is an absolute pure classic. I have been saying on many forums for some time that what the world needs now is a new Cat Stevens. Forget about all these endless vocal competitions, we should be encouraging new composers to think and write about the world in a positive way to bring upliftment, hope and promising times into our lands and into our hearts..
I listened to Cat Stevens music as a kid and a teenager. Then, funny how life flips on you, at the age of 23, I started working for him. Nearly a decade I worked for this master songwriter.
I chose this song, today, to dance joy out to the world (part of a collective effort at noon today). I've come to listen to it again, here, with you Jamal. Thank you for sharing your experience of this music, so very meaningful today.
When I heard this song for the first time it took me to a different place love the song love the message everybody should should be happier after listen to it
Always wondered if the O'Jays song "Love Train" (which came out a year after this song) was inspired at all by this one, as different as the two tunes are musically. But then there's also the great 1965 song by The Impressions, "People Get Ready", with the lyrics speaking of a train to Jordan, picking up passengers coast to coast. Oh, and Bob Marley did a song called "Zion Train" in 1980.
From about '71 thru '76, Cat Stevens was one of the best performers out there. Great, unusual songs, unique lyrical perspectives, "that" voice...all delivered with amazing energy. His albums "Teaser & The Firecat" and "Tea For The Tillerman" are timeless and wonderful.
Such good memories from Cat Stephen’s music. Peace Train came out in 1971, a force of GOOD music came out that year. I was 12/13 years old and it all impacted me greatly. He created and drew a wonderful animated short, Teaser and the Firecat. Check it out when you have time. Thanks for all you do.
The first time I heard this song was when I watched Remember the Titans. It was played during the scene where Julius was walking to Bertier’s house for dinner. It caught my attention so I found on Napster lol. Anyways after listening to the song it made that scene so much better. Can’t wait to see you react to Father and Son.
See what I mean Jay??!! Peace Train being a metaphor (kinda) for exactly what u keep promoting and Cat begging for the very same thing?! "Why does the world have to go on hatin?" Ahhhh goosebumps every time with this song! 🙏
My father put on a Facebook post once that this song reminded him of me because I gave him peace. He has now passed on and this song brings back so many memories. Love you Dad.
There are special artists out there who just plug directly into the human soul. Cat Stevens/Yusuf is one such exemplary musician. I know there have been a lot of Cat song recommendations, all outstanding, but I want to add a lesser-heard song to the mix: Silent Sunlight. A real beauty.
Brother Jamel.. your reaction on this day gives me chills.. Cat Stevens had not sung any of these songs in many many years... But on the evening of 9/11.. He opened his heart and sang this song for like the first time in like 40yrs on T.V..and here your reaction of THIS song on loaded on 9/11 gives me chills and warms my heart 20yrs later...Peace & Love from the NYC!!
Hey Jamel! I'm so glad you got to this song. All I gotta say is 🙌🏼 🙌🏼 🙌🏼 🙌🏼! I got nothing but a lifetime of love for the music of Cat Stevens/Yusuf. You can also check out versions of this song that he's done in the last year. He's still out there performing. ☮ out! ✌🏼
There were two albums that truly made me want to play music and they were Led Zeppelin’s 4 and Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman. I was very young during the 70’s still in single digits. I started playing in 1977 at 8 years old and still play when I can today. I have a disability that makes it really hard to play well now but that’s okay. Thank you gentlemen for giving me a great gift. Music!
Peace is all we ever wanted back in the 60's & 70's.....that's why our music was so good.....we sang for peace & love for all, in hopes that everyone in the world would listen & take it to their hearts. We're still singing about it, but it keeps falling on deaf ears.
I keep wondering where our versions of music of peace love and hope are but I am so thankful that our past contained these artists. We are truly lucky! This is the music we really can’t let die.
Jamal, I feel ya! So many of us struggle that is why we love your channel so much. You are one of those trying to bring folks together and spread peace. Don't get discouraged you are making a difference. 😍😊
Cat has so many feel-good songs. I can't wait to see your reaction to Father and Son. I hope you get to that one soon. Definitely, one you don't want to miss out on.
