I've been watching a vet and her cat for a while and she showed how she gets her cat to walk on a leash (harness) and be toted around in the carrier. She took the brand new carrier and left it near the cat's food, and did some touch-reward food training with the cat to get the cat to be inside and see it was ok. For a while the carrier sat open by the food and the cat could come and go, and get used to it. Maybe that will help!

Most people(myself included) have made the mistake of trying to put the cat in head first. If you put them in rear end first it works a treat.

Mine go into the carrier as soon as they get the signal. The carrier means home. They can get the heck outta there.

Years ago I had two cats that were brothers, and I'd take them to the vet in the same carrier, so I was lugging about 30 pounds of cat around. I'd put the carrier in the basement, very gently open the door so it didn't squeak, then I'd go find the first one, ideally asleep somewhere. That would usually go ok if I could get him in there before he was awake enough to argue. But now the other cat was on full alert, and nowhere to be seen. Once I found him, my advantage of surprise completely gone, it was pro level cat wrangling to get the second one in without the first one getting out. Like trying to contain two streams of water moving in opposite directions trying to pass over and under each other. I relied on the chaos of them not quite knowing which direction to go to sneak past each other. A difficult operation. I can offer you this little hint since you're dealing with one cat. If you can manage to pick up the cat when it is sleeping, that helps, and as you walk toward the carrier (with the door already open, that the cat is hopefully unaware of), you can kind of distract it cuddling it over your shoulder. The maneuver is, as you approach, you wait until last second, then aim the cat toward the open door with a little acceleration and swiftly guide it in. If done well, the cat is caught unaware, realizes what is going on too late to mount a rebellion, and can't really go anywhere but right in because of the momentum. If you make your move too soon it is going to get exciting. Another thing you could do is kind of get the cat, ideally while napping, and kind of work it into a little swaddling pig-in-a-blanket (or towel) situation, then you can just stick it in there and that's that, but that does take some of the sport out of it. The cat will develop an unnatural fear of blankets, but that's another way to go.

@@verreal I had a cat taken to the back room at the vet without a carrier. She came back in a carrier, she ran so confidently into a carrier when they were done that they thought it was hers.
