Don't be afraid to treat your dog like a dog. Getting respect is foundational. If we excuse bitting as a puppy the puppy learns it's allowed to put it's mouth on you. When your dog matures and chooses to take possession of something, food, toy, couch, bed ect.and puts its mouth on you why is it now called aggression? Start early for the respect you want later.

Love this. I take my Catahoula out every day to practice obedience. Fetch is still not 100 percent. He wants to turn it into keep away.

Hi Nancy, have you tried having two toys or balls? Keeping the fetch at short distances at first. Once your gets the object start backing away, I like objects that squeak, squeaking the toy you have. This should start getting your dog to come to you after he gets what you've thrown. Very important not to put yourself in a position where your dog doesn't allow you to get to him. So now when your dog sees you have another toy he will most likely want that. And you'll be able to get a true retrieve. Blessings

I always play fetch with two balls, that’s the only way he’ll drop the ball is to chase the other one.

@@rhondaduplissey889 It took me several months but I finally have gotten him to accept playing with one ball. Balou is such a knuckle head he was trying to get both balls in his mouth, or he would just stay fixed on the original ball. He is too smart for his own good. He teaches me to be smarter, and more present. Beautiful boy.

Choking isn’t necessary with my Catahoula, I couldn’t imagine doing that to my dog.

A yank on the collar and choking are extremely different. I'm so glad you have a compliant cooperative dog. Thank you for watching.

i just got a catahoula crossed with great peranise [misspelled]. hoping he will help keep coyotes away from my few goats. i live in rural area on 20acres,pond&creek. i have a 80' cable run. . i'm hoping to get him in a obedience class when he gets abit older. only 8 weeks old but settling in nicely so far. do males have a tendency to stray from home? i have had pits or dobermans most of my adult life but like what i have read about catahoulas. any advice appreciated. i am glad they like water as i have never had a dog that liked to swim. i hope the cable run & swimming will help keep him out of mischief. thanks north ga area

Training a dog from the dogs point of view is foreign to us people, “Counter Intuitive” in fact. We have to admit we sometimes don’t know what we don’t know. Otherwise it adds to much confusion when communicating with our dogs.

I’d like to get one. It’s just that everytike I look into different breeds they are always described as needed a lot of time to release energy. I exercise everyday and don’t mind talking them out to play and run yet videos Iv seen make this breed seem tireless and overly rambunctious if you aren’t on a farm lol. I wonder, what would you say an estimate of a daily need to play is? I wouldn’t be using them for hunting or herding . I don’t mind spending time and playing and going for jogs but I just want to make sure what’s a realistic assumption . There is a breeder I was looking at but theirs actually look a Quite bit thicker than what I tend to see in this breed, also loser skin. I believe their RU-vid channel is jenuine catahoulas .

Have you considered adopting instead of purchasing from a breeder? Many breeders tend to abuse their pups and also scam buyers, making false claims of the breed they’re selling

No I haven’t considered it . Iv seen a few but sometimes dogs for adoption have already set habits and id like to train a dog to be accustomed to the way I’d like to be as best I can. If I adopt that may be an uphill battle or even non negotiable really. After I posted my comment here the dog I wanted sold but there is another somewhere else I am considering . I just get nervous because people claim they are very aggressive. I’m pretty sure I’m more than capable But when I see people give strong warnings I take it seriously . However I feel most of the time people exaggerate and one has to consider lazy owners who don’t do a good job .

Hey there, Hey There, I see that as well that all these working breeds need all this exercise. This has not been my experience. Can some lines be more driven than others? Yes. You can choose a line that is not directly a working line. I have switch breeds multiple times to experience first hand the breed characteristics. My style of training puts the dogs mind to work. I like to equate it to sitting in a seminar all day. How do you feel after working your mind for a long period of time? We all feel exhausted don’t we? And then when I was exercising regularly myself… years ago, LOL. How did I feel on my days of rest? I felt like exercising! So we get these breeds we exercise them to be athletes and guess what you have created a dog that just wants to work, work, work. Don’t get me wrong I’m not suggesting to create an couch potato either. Someone getting a breed like a Catahoula is most likely not someone that wants lapdog behavior. Train the brain to think on you. Also I’m a big advocate of trick training even though I don’t have any videos posted of my dogs doing them. I love the relationship it builds when you trick train as well as train your dog to respect you as the authority. My natural relationship with my dog is I like to do things with my dog. I take them swimming, I find large pieces of property or even parking lots like, school yards/foot ball fields, industrial parks, beaches. Whatever I can I use at least 40’ line and walk/jog the perimeter with my dog. I’ll bring a toy and play with my dog. Have you seen the toy on the end of the stick I use to get the dog to play? The reason people think the dog needs all this exercise is because they don’t know how to train them and out of guilt and lack of knowledge this is where they land. No condemnation for their ignorance. Many good professional trainers don’t know this. So people are being taught improperly. I don’t agree with having to adopt. You are correct if you want to start from scratch you should be able to choose what you like. Adoption is good yet I want to know what I’m getting if I have specific plans for my dog and relationship with it. Just choose a line that doesn’t have crazy working characteristics. I hope this helps. There are groups on FB that you could find some good reputable breeders. God Bless

I play all kinds of games with my Catahoula, he loves chase in small areas. He’ll get the zoomies and Zig zag all around me. He likes basketball with the tennis ball and he’s very good at getting the ball from me. We have a game where I throw the ball against the house and see who can catch it, he wins most the time, he can jump about 4 feet high. He also loves frisbee. He’s the smartest dog I’ve ever had. It’s not work to me, it’s very entertaining for me. He keeps me laughing.

Same old ruff aggressive punishing treatment by an uneducated out date methods of communicating with dogs.

Since seeing this response I've been on the fence asking myself, "Do I block such ignorance? Use it as a teaching aid for those that have been deceived into the pp nn training dilution and their dogs have only gotten worse? Or whether to respond in a fair exchange of ideas? Seeing that the inquirer used the old ruff aggressive out dated way to communicate in a professional manner I figured the last choice wouldn't be the way to go. So I continue to gently teach truth. Dogs bite one another. To simulate the bite with a collar and leash for a behavior that is well known to a dog is the current updated way dogs communicate from the dogs point of view. @ExtraordinaryCanineConnection channel is all about adopting sweet little puppies helps me understand why this person would have this misunderstanding of the training here. I train for "The Real World"! And work with dog owner that also live in the real world and have serious real world issues. I have been many dog owners last resort when their vet and other dog trainers have given up on the dogs and would advise putting the dog down. On lookers don't miss the point when the dogs run off and I shout to @2:17 "Not chase Doodlebug" (the Afgan Hound that is in the yard with us and @2:20 Ash came back. Real World Real Results and the dogs are not offended to be spoken to on THEIR level of communication.
