I showed my husband this video because he is a retired Police Dog Handler of “too many years.” He too would agree that some dogs don’t make good pets and mentioned the Malinois in particular (Belgian Shepherd.) In the wrong hands these beautiful dogs, including the one in your video, can end up in rehoming centres or worse because people don’t handle them correctly or put in the hours of work needed to accommodate the dog’s needs.

It is these types of discussions that are the most interesting to me. It makes me want to leave the city/suburb go buy a bunch of property so I can have bunch of dogs doing what they were breed to do over thousands of years of genetic and environmental shaping. Nothing is more beautiful than a strong, smart animal doing what it is born to do and fulfilling their purpose. Thank you for sharing the email.

There are many variants of the Louisiana cur. Like everything else they are evolving. I have had many of them since the 1980s in SW cameron parish louisiana. As far South and as far west as you can go. Some were runaways, cast offs and dogs that someone was going to put a bullet in. The defining characteristic for me is the curvature of the spine and the swoop of the tail. You can observe it as hank walks (1:22). Sometimes other herding dogs are thought to be catahoula, but if they dont have the spine and tail trait they dont have catahoula blood line. If you are thinking about getting one, be honest that you are the type of person that can spend alot of tim outdoors and your dog can be with you. They are not happy left inside with nothing to do. If the cur likes you he willl be a good citizen, Make certain you are not an alcoholic. My neighbor had a drinking problem and his cathoula bit him because he yelled at his children.

Up here in Canada, about a month ago I came across a fellow with a couple of good looking dogs in the bush and casually asked him if the one was a Catahoulla, he almost fell over, he said I must be some kinda dog nut as in the four years that he has had her no one recognized the breed. Meanwhile I am keeping an eye on my Caucasian Ovcharka to make sure he didn't go off on an adventure. Am a dog lover, not extreme and the only reason I recognized the breed is your videos. Thanks for making that fellows day, he did say she is very hard headed at times.

All dog breeds start as a "type," bred selectively for certain desired characteristics, usually regionally. Over time, someone decides to create a formal "breed," with a standard for looks and temperament, documentation of parentage, etc. . . . But even though a breed registry may now exist, plenty of folks continue in the tried and true way they have been following for generations -- breeding dogs they know and like to get characteristics they like. I appreciate this man's historical perspective, his obvious love and knowledge about these types of dogs, his respect for them for their strengths and his awareness of their limitations. Even more imoressive, in my opinion, is his self-awareness and understanding of his own strengths (knowledge and experience) and limitations (physically due to age.) My breed is the Australian Shepherd -- with a similar development story arc as the Catahoula/Cur. And similar struggles with balancing working performance suitability vs. Pet suitability. I love listening to and reading about the historical perspective in old articles or from long-time experts. This is a great discussion. I appreciate your open-mindedness and obvious curiosity.

I had a Catahoula rescue out of TN. Best dog I ever had and he passed at age 15. I could teach him anything! So smart and never aggressive, or destructive. He love everybody and all animals. I could walk him off leash w/o an issue. Wish I had another one. Currently I have a German shepherd rescue. She’s a lot of work and high energy but coming along nicely.

He sees things as an older man would. Speaks like an older man. Probably lives near the countryside at least. I enjoyed what he said. Think it is hard when one gets a job and no one is home till their day long job is over. It’s very unfair to the dog. My neighbors have Catahoulas and they’re in the back yard most all of the time. Guess they never have to be socialized that way. At least there are 2 of them and they get to look out into the woods and smell the animals struggling to live out there. Like zoo animals. I’m older too and dogs lived inside and outside with us all the neighbors had one at least, no adult worried about kids playing in the fields or woods because they would have a variety pack of dogs with them. They were so helpful getting us home on time ect, ect, and being lots of fun in and outside, playing our games. Best buddies in the world. Glad I grew up then and not now in a one room, one age, daycare room with a bored caretaker. Yikes. It is not only dogs that suffer. Really enjoy your channel, thank you for the video!

I have a registered Catahoula named Bowdre. He is a blue leopard and a little over 3 years old. I waited till I moved back to rural Kentucky to get him being the city not the best place to raise one. However if you start a training regiment as soon as you get your puppy you will be just fine. They must know who is in charge or they will take over. However they will melt your heart and become your best friend. Give them a job to do. Bowdre protects our chickens and has only lost 1 in 3 years. Thank you for what you do. God Bless

I had a Catahoula that was in a rescue center for 6 months as a puppy in Louisiana. They sent him to Kansas City and I found him and adopted him. I did not know what I was getting into. Very loyal dog. I did always feel that he would protect me no matter what. At the same time if he felt I was not doing a good job he would let me know(he bit my stomach one time). If there was a stray dog when walking, my attitude was a big dictator of what he should do. He would protect my other dog while on a walk if another dog came up to us. If that dog was aggressive he would not hesitate to grab the dog by the neck. When I took him to the farm he was always very interested in helping. He wasn't trained to work with cattle but he would always figure out which way we wanted them to go. It didn't matter if it was in a pen or out in the open. He had instincts that told him this is where the cattle should go. That said he was not trained and he often took it too far. Extraordinarily tough. They can take some big hits(not by me) or scraps and still keep working. I had to walk him twice a day or there would be punishment.

I took what I've heard you say a number of times to heart. "All dogs want to be Labs, & all Labs want to be black." I drove 7 hours one way to pick up a 4.5 month black lab from an animal rescue this past May. He may or may not be 100% Lab, but he seems like an American Lab. to me. They were going to have him fixed the week I picked him up, but I put a stop to that. He's been nothing but joy, except for when he chewed off the pull cord on my push mower. LOL! I can't vouch for the Catahoula Leopard dog breed, but as a retired middle school science teacher I can vouch for Charlotte. She does an awesome job with the dogs. There's more to life than cell phones! It's great seeing kids helping out!

How has Hank been doing? Is he an asset in that he socializes and plays with the other dogs...when he wants to. He is just beautiful. Yes, they are something. The description was pretty well spot on. Not like any other dog. Very intelligent, yet independent and also wanting to be involved in what you're doing and at your side. Some have been trained for search and rescue as it gives them a puzzle to solve. That's a dangerous route. Just as I was watching this, mine decided to tear something up. Hard on fabrics and furniture, and yes, I say 'No' and give alternate toys. You're not supposed to yell at them, just be calm and firm. It's tough, but someone has to give them a home. You ought to talk to a breeder, there are three purebred lines, and they can probably give you some tips. If so pass them on.

@@StonnieDennis That would be great. I bet he understands a lot more than the other dogs. Also, they grow for two years, plenty of high quality protein. I cook meat or chicken without salt or onion with dog friendly vegetables and rice and put a few tbls on top of the kibble, sort of a stew which we both can have. No kibble and some salt for me. I'm sure he loves you and your family to bits.

Consider Catahoulas like Malinois. They’re not for everyone. We’re not a real active family and our Mal will lay on the couch or flip the switch when we’re ready. He’s kinda learned to be us. But when my neighbor LEO takes me up to the training course he will go wild and loves it. But will come home and turn it right off. True family partner. Just wish we would’ve socialized him. Does not do well around other dogs. My biggest regret. Wish he accepted it, he’d have so many friends.

I own a 4 year old female Catahoula. The mans email is spot on. I like to think my girl has an exceptional temperament but to honest we had to work hard on her resource guarding. They are hard to consistently train because sometimes they have no interest in what the human wants to do. I did most of my training in the woods on a 4wheeler with a Garmin system and we figured each other out is the best way to put it😂😂 I might be bias but Catahoulas are majestic and proud breed but are best left in a firm and active owners hands while also understanding that they have thier own mind and will power. A trusting bond is really needed to be secessfull

Sounds like the old man knows what he is talking about. I am new to Catahoulas as we got our girl from Kentucky a year ago. I've had a 100 lb pit and a beagle and a 50lb mutt that no one knew what he was. I picked the breed because of the strong personality and ruggedness. That said, she is a pure house dog, and has fit that role perfectly. She is about the same age and size as Hank there, and seems about the same demeanor. That said, I could see how they would be a handful and uncontrollable in the wrong hands. She is a great girl, super smart, strong willed, but aims to please...when she wants to. Love the videos, keep up the good work. Oh yeah, definitely an all weather dog, she loved the cold when we picked her up in Kentucky, but does great down in our Florida heat.

People should get an understanding of the breed before choosing one. It’s like concealed weapon training. Some breeds can be a weapon if not trained properly and not in the owner’s skills.

I don't know this catahoula breed but I can picture them by the way you described. sounds like my typical outside farm dog as a small kid. whatever dog we had back then stayed in our attached garage but was with us every day as we played or worked outside. it stayed on the farm. came when called most of the time but.. most often you didn't think about it because they were in the general area and that was close enough. we never attempted to make our farm dog an inside dog back then.

My girl is considered a Black Mouth Cur by southern standards because she's a solid Yellow/light brown color with brown eyes. She's VERY strong, even at 9 years. We're very active. I get compliments all the time about how beautiful she is and people love her behavior, but they don't understand that it took a year before we really understood each other and could move forward. I had to change a lot of my lifestyle. I adopted her a 3 and tell everyone that we're more roommates than pet/owner and it's true. They're sensitive and stubborn. She's my shadow but also very independent. Sometimes she listens seamlessly, other times I also get ignored. Our communication is nonverbal some of the time. People that know what our routine sometimes admit that they could never do it. It's a lot of work but I feel like our training has been relatively easy. Personally I plan on getting another in the future, but after she's passed. I don't think I could handle 2 of this personality it's definitely not for everyone.

I am fortunate enough to own a NALC registered Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog bitch. Shes the same age as Hank although quite a bit slimmer. WARNING...DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE GETTING ONE! There are a few different lines in the breed and they can differ quite a bit. My girl is from one of the purely working lines She's definitely stunningly beautiful. But she has the intelligence of a Boarder Collie, the drive of a Malinois, confidence of a Rhodesian Ridgeback and all topped off with the stubborness of a Husky. She is a force of nature with no off switch. I completely agree with everything in that email. Catahoulas are a lot like wolf dogs and actually they kind of are so yes. You need to know 101% that you can handle that level of animal in your home and in public. That all said...I'll never own any other breed. 😁
