Such beautiful, elegant playing! The delights of this music are brought to life through your touch, and in the way you reveal the many different moods and affekts as they intersect with the temperament (tuning system), which itself reveals so much about this music.

i find, for italian harpsichords atleast there are very few replications that even come close to teh qaulity of the orginal insturemnts, they always tend to be buzzy and uncfomritable

Catalina Vicens rightly deserves all the accolades and awards given to her in Medieval and Renaissance music. She tempers the expansive passion of Claudio Arrau with the subtle precision of Glenn Gould in her keyboard interpretations.

Picchi was a very Baroque composer though, with the toccata (featuring long running passages with occasional contrapuntal sections) being a relatively new form.

Hi Catalina! Just seeing this very nice video of you years later. Beautiful. I'm convinced, however, that the text at the end of the piece is corrupt, the left hand should shift to a D final, not remain on the G that in the Tregian manuscript is held to the end, creating harmonic absurdity, a d minor toccata ending with a G major finalis. Crazy! If in the penultimate measure you move to D/A/D, the work then ends, as it began, in D. The finalis would then be F#/A/D. Great to hear you, as always! Here it is with the text corrected, played by Timothy Roberts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2nMnRQnM8hM.html

Thanks Peter! As you can imagine, I’m well aware of the strange ending and what it would probably have been. I just underline the probably, and enjoy in the meantime the strangeness of the document. That being said, I certainly don’t mind versions that are “corrected”, as the one of my dear Tim.

shouldn't that be a D# there? even the Victorians thought so. what does the original manuscript say?
@clavecinvicens
@clavecinvicens 6 лет назад
You are right, there is and there should be an Eb and a D#. The problem is that many (and most?) instruments of this time didn't have split keys. In that case, one can do compromises with the tuning or acknowledge a false D#. I can only imagine that it is very likely they performed this music also in instruments without split keys, favoring a Eb in the tuning as it is more prevalent, and as a consequence having similar melodic/ harmonic 'effects' in their daily performance scenario.
@ethanmitchell9642
@ethanmitchell9642 6 лет назад
When you mention 'split keys', does this mean that instruments may not have had 'white' and 'black' keys in terms of how they are positioned on a keyboard nowadays? I discovered your RU-vid channel today and I am highly inspired. I just wish I had access to some of the instruments you have been able to play on!
@nicejungle
@nicejungle 4 года назад
@@ethanmitchell9642 Split keys is when you have black keys splitted in two for meantone temperament. For exemple, you have 2 keys for playing the D# or the Eb In equal temperament, it's the same key and that's why playing baroque music on a piano sucks a lot.
