I used to do this job a lot when I was mechanic, but it was with FSX air knife, then I test. if it's in spec, it doesn't get baked. If out spec it get's baked then ash blowned out. Not as boring as it seems as shit dose go down sometimes. My favorite is putting in what looks to be a good DPF just to see the air knife expose that it has ceramic blowned off after the first pass of the air knife. What I think happens is the dpf had a micro crack also sometimes soot hides it too and the air just rips it apart. Water can be used to clean a DPF but recommended not to be high pressure, so don't go putting a power washer at your dpf. Also note direction of the flow of the water matters just like air cleaning. Most dpfs have markings of the flow of the dpf and what you want to do is run it reverse that flow. So water would going into what we would call the clean side and pushing out to the dirty side. This is to free up soot and ash that may be trapped as thats what the dpf is made to do and running it in reverse is pushing out of the path of least resistance.
@Leonardo-or1ll diesel particulate filter in laymen terms it is a more advanced Cadillac converter. Filters more, and by doing so, it also makes more back pressure. Around 2007 and 2008, the USA required manufacturers to install DPF to most road trucks.
That's not a filter, it breaks down unburned fuel. Also the fluid in the tank is recycled. And if you bury the liquid when done it's then gone back to the same place it came from.
Alright, German tech here. What you're looking at is not a vehicle's lifetime worth of polution, but a mere couple months worth of driving coming out of that catalytic converter. That thing's purpose it to get very hot, so it can burn unburnt fuel and make the exhaust gases less bad for the environment. It can only do that, if you drive long enough for it to actually get that hot. If all you do daily is city driving (short distance). Guess what's not gonna get hot enough, collect and get clogged by all the burnable sut, instead of burning it up. You can replace it and the new one will look like that within several months, depending on your driving and engine condition. That thing has rare precious metals inside. Mining them and building that device has consumed a CONSIDERABLE amount of resources and energy. Saving it is the right decision, no question about it. Short distance driving is what you should be mad about, not saving the thing that saves the environment. Free education, son.
@@NafanyaZXthanks for taking out the time to explain. I was aware about DPFs needing more highway driving or long distance driving but wasn't aware why. You cleared it out.

All my years working at Eberspacher making airtight welds so that they can pump shit through the catalyst without leaking, just to find out that they're going to cut it open in order to pump shit through it. Makes me feel not so bad about bypassing the leak tester before I quit.
@@spencers4121 Most factory DPFs are not made to be serviceable, including the one in the video. You can see that the shell was warped from cutting it out, right at the weld too. You can get aftermarket DPFs that are serviceable, and they do clamp on where a standard DPF is welded to its tapered neck, but they have clear rims for the clamps to hold on to.
@@danielonnen401 No, you really do have to cut them open like that to clean them. The thing is, if you're driving a diesel hard enough, it cleans out the DPF enough that this type of cleaning isn't needed nearly as often.
I mean, kinda. It's kinda how espresso is made. That tank is like the portafilter for the machine. The coffee goes inside the portafilter and water is pushed through to make espresso. You aren't to far off
well that would be the case of a dpf oversaturated with soot and unable to do a regen on its own, by the color this one has lived a long enough life to be saturated in ash instead which takes a really long time, usually 150k+ km...

Negativo mi amigo. La mayoría de estas empresas envían estos residuos a tanques en donde reciben un tratamiento especial. Claro, hay empresas que no respetan normas ambientales y contaminan, pero ésta empresa no creo que entre en esa lista.

Do people catch the waste water to process the platinum out of it? I've seen people do it with dust from the side of freeways, but I imagine there's quite a bit loose in the cat.
@@slimydick23 exhaust filters are not fuel or air filters. Exhaust filters only delay when you release the carbon and how. Instead of a steady amount spreading over long distances. You dump it all in one location. Absolutely useless regulations deemed up by idiots who have never turned a wrench. Built anything or actually designed anything.
Like fuel filters and engine air filters and cabin air filters and fuel injectors and throttle bodies etc… ? The catalytic converter does not actually store the carbon like a filter. It creates a chemical reaction with the exhaust that makes it safer for the environment before it is exhausted.
@@mrbrian87 He's talking about DEF/DPF, its not the same thing as a cat, or an air filter, or a fuel filter, or an oil filter. you have to constantly add fluid, and you have to cut off most of your exhaust system to maintenance it, and they are super expensive to replace.
@@solenya2400yes I understand thanks. I took Charles’s comments sarcastically as if he was saying it was dumb to put things on a car that can clog up and need cleaning, so I was just saying there are plenty of things in a car like that. Most people don’t understand how many things need to be cleaned and replaced in a car for proper maintenance and they end up ruining a good car quite quickly.
Cleaning catalyst with oxalic acid, citric acid and 180° water. Constant movement thru solution will clean any Catalytic converter. Big industrial machines can not afford to buy new converters. You think the converter on your car or truck is expensive !
Yeah, but the air is cleaner. But also pay no attention to the extra tons of plastic jugs that are generated from the DEF that they shoved down our throats.
So I must ask, since Al these contraptions have been put on cars to keep pollution out of the atmosphere but we have to clean them and flush the pollutants down the drain back into the environment. Please tell me what the point of putting them on vehicles is then
The chemicals are recycled, like a parts wash sink. But the question is, since the vehicle engine must perform its cycle to clean/pass through then how is it saving fuel or emissions? The entire process and DEF fluid and all of the plastic containers is a complete joke.
you know there's a easier way and most times you don't even have to remove the cat from the vehicle, dish soap and warm water mix, plug end of exhaust and remove the upstream O2 sensor and fill the exhaust with the soapy water mix and let it sit for 24 hours, then drain and replace O2 sensor and start it, now your cat is efficient and not plugged anymore, unless it's melted .
I’ve seen a catalyst flushed under pressure with soapy water. It did look clean afterwards. Pretty much took most of the dirt out of it. Worked great afterward too.
I clean mine by just running my car in the garage. The trick is to get all airflow in the garage completely eliminated. Simply use spray foam insulation, 6 mil plastic, a lack of self awareness and insulation tape. Let the car run until you see stars and they completely obscure your vision and it feels like your maxing out a marry-go-round and pulling a few G's. When you throw up it's clean..... If you shit your pants you might be dead.

Think about it- All that pollution that was caught temporarily in the CAT converter , is now flowing into the sewer and back into the environment again!
The EPA and their asinine “ solutions” to clean up the environment are just short term bandaids to mask the problem. ( Bare in mind , most of these bandaids have actually decreased fuel mileage( especially in the semi truck world), along with killing reliability and performance . This is all designed to sell more parts, more repairs at the dealerships and eventually more new trucks ( rinse and repeat thinking) . But hey, the corporations and fuel companies are making windfall profits- so that’s cool . The ultimate losers are the buying public and of course - the environment. Pathetic government rules!
Didn't think this needed mentioned, but the minerals and metals inside of the cat react with the exhaust fumes; eliminating impurities. It doesn't trap the toxic... it changes the chemical makeup, rendering it harmless.
You are correct sir. The elements in the monolithic( honey comb ) material, ( usually palladium or platinum) react with the carbon monoxide to change it into a non harmless substance. However the solid partial pollutants from soot and unburied diesel , is what makes the flush water that you are seeing in the video brown like that , are going straight into the sewer system.
