My BiL was a boatbuilder for many years, he built hundreds of boats, some very large a tropical Survey Trawlers and some small ships for the Navy, he also rebuilt many old and some virtually brand new boats built by other yards. He always said the real art of boat building was alignment and balance. I’ve seen him spend 3 days of him and his Foreman correcting the alignment on a new boat from another yard, he said unless it was right he would be wasting his time on the other problems.
Truly amazing. Aligning the stern tube, surfing, eating taco's, such fun to see you both enjoying friends after working on the project. Perfect surfing conditions!
I've never been to Tofino directly, but we went back and forth past there on the fishboats all the time. Its so beautiful over there. Most of our time on land was in Ucluelet. Another incredibly beautiful place on the west coast of Vancouver Island. But really, my time on the fishboats was a very awe inspiring time traveling up and down the entire coast of B.C. Great to see you and Matt got to enjoy what I call my home turf.
Sean and I (Brandon) had such an amazing time with you all!! It’s so special to have these memories saved, thank you for filtering through all of our ridiculous antics and making such a great video! Love you all!!
Thank you so much for taking us in and showing us all the spots that are special to you two! I loved going back over the footage to make this video and remember all fun and silly and magical moments we shared together. We miss you all so much and can't wait to see you at the Annapolis Show in a few months!! 🥰
This video shows why the majority of sailboat manufacturers are going to sail drives, less labor involved. I applaud you for going the extra mile to install a shaft drive system, though I would’ve loved seeing y’all with twin outboards! The best of both worlds..... in my opinion of course!
We originally were going to have twin outboards, but after test sailing a Seawind that had them, we quickly realized they're better for coastal cruising, but not world sailing.
The precision taken getting your stern tubes in will really payoff later. Getting the shafts aligned will be easy. Your trip was way more fun than sanding. Thanks for sharing.
Great work on the laser sights, your precision work is amazing! As for the rest of your video ... I think hanging out with you guys would be a Blast, or as we say in Ireland ... You'd be great craic!! Stay Safe & Fair Winds!!
Nice to do an engine template. I've always done line of shaft with a wire, a "penny peice" for the aft end and inside calipers. Great to see how you did it. Best wishes from Jeff.
Welcome to the left coast... you were in our backyard... we sail all around our island.. many think we are crazy to sail in this curent... wish you got the chance to sail the inside... and desolation sound... and ya... that fire messed up the west side of the island... most people dont even know we have this big island here.
Colby is a guy that has a sport fishing boat at the marina, but works as a mechanic. He has been INCREDIBLY helpful to us during this build, and we are so lucky to have him.
What's with the two Brazilians, looks like their dressed for winter compared to the others. Fun video as always. Seeing as you were close by, drop into Alberta sometime, if you have time. Stay safe all
There is a Tacofina in Victoria Bc too (its related to the one you ate at). One thing I noticed about engine rooms on utube is some engine rooms are just dirty (due to lack of finishing). The engine rooms that have that finished coating seem to hold up better for cleaning/spills etc then non finished engine rooms. So I hope you plan on finishing the whole engine room. One thing I know about engines is that eventually everything leaks. Due to bad enginering, material, vibration etc. Can you do a video(s) on the overall design/plan of your boat. 1. Rigging and sails and controls. Dagger board design, moving up and down. 2. Anchor and windlass and controls 3. Power supply, engine, alternators, solar, DC and AC circuits. 24 Volts or 48V DC. 4. House requirements eg stove, oven, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, Air conditioning etc. (relate to power consumption) 5. Environmental. Black water system(toilets), Grey (shower, sinks), garbage disposal or holding (eliminating odors) 6. Engines, sea water cooled or fresh water, water maker, water tanks, fuel tanks . Steering controls, rudders. 7. Props? type -regenerative or neutral or fixed. 8. Have you thought about all fresh water cooling for AC, engines, using a salt water heat exchanger. 9. Position easy access to fuel and water filters, and easy access around the engine and AC and water maker. 10. Fuel system, will you have a fuel cleaning system? Sometimes you take on bad fuel with contaminates, most Fuel filter take stuff out before it goes to the engine, but a fuel circulation system cleans up stuff from your tanks. 11. How many bilge pumps? for damage control (hit a reef or other boat) or just a leak from salt water etc.? Water tight bulkheads to prevent flooding. 12. Survival boat. When things really goes wrong!!! 13. What would you carry to help other boats in time of emergency?
My Son Elin, lives there; thanks for the sights, I am not able to visit him, as I am an UNVAXXED, American, and persona non grata in Chinada... Have Fun,,, Giant Hugs
That's a shame you haven't gone, Vancouver Island is beautiful! We're so happy that we were able to take a week away from the build and spend time there with our friends.
I believe it was so the boat could be beached (with an additional skeg) if we had folding props. But I never asked the designer why. And they are building this way in Vietnam too
Our PM is a POS. He chose to vacation Tofino on the very first truth and reconciliation day... long story. Hope you enjoyed the island. If you're in Tofino again, opt for local Big Daddy's Fish Fry instead of the Tacofino franchise :)
