In this weeks episode we help our friends on an identical boat to ours go FULLY ELECTRIC! They are avid sailors and wanted to get rid of their diesel engines. Once again Davy's fibreglassing skills come in handy and we help them fill the old holes in the boat from the sail drives!

Thanks for that video, shall be watching your channel a lot more now, need to learn specifically this for hopefully soonish converting a petrol powered sailing cat to full electric.. at least, that's my aiming point.
@MrMinnesotaMac

Maybe this was discussed earlier, but why are the motors being mounted aft of the rudders? The efficiency of the rudders, and thus maneuverability of the vessel, is greatly increased with the propwash flowing over the rudders. Without that propwash the flow is greatly reduced. Especially in a situation like motoring into port with following seas, you'll have minimal rudder efficiency.
@BarefootTravels
@BarefootTravels Год назад
That’s how this model of fountaine pajot was designed with the sail drives behind the rudders. They wanted to keep the electric motors in the same place as there was already a hole to work with

The ‘binder’ holding ‘CSM’ together dissolves in styrene which is a monomer used in polyester type resins. This frees up the fibers allowing them to conform to the shape of your work. Cheers Warren

I love this project and did the same on my cat (SW1000XL2) except on legs like an outboard. But I can't understand why the owners wouldn't put the pods _in front_ of the rudder?
@BarefootTravels
@BarefootTravels Год назад
This is where the existing sail drives were. There is already a place to mount the engine in the engine room. If they were to put them in front of the rudder it would have made it a much bigger job

Hi i I just wanted to ask, why do you use torpedo motors and not a electric motors that you can change when you boat is in the water, it will save you a lot of money money
@douglasrobbie9998
@douglasrobbie9998 Год назад
Nice plug forming. A lot of 1708 layers to get that thickness. Dinghy losing air- if patches don't fix and you want to keep dinghy for another year, you can use 2 dunnage bags (relatively inexpensive inflatable bags of different shapes and sizes used in shipping ) 1 per tube, assuming dinghy has 2 tubes. There does have to be a slit made in each tube, insert the appropriate size bag into the tube, inflate and sew up /patch the slit. The bags supply the flotation ,not the tubes.

@CheersWarren Год назад
B1708 is biaxial but it includes a layer of CSM attached to it with the stitching (No binder) . The 08 part of the 1708 refers to the weight of glass added ie 8 oz per sq yd or about 1oz per sqft of csm. The 17 refers to the 17 oz per squ yard of biaxial fiberglass . Yes csm is normally per sq-ft Woven and stitched product is per sq-yd. (Nominal weights above) Cheers Warren
