Catastrophic Avalanche on Shishapangma | Anna Gutu & Gina Marie Rzucidlo Race to the Summit

Anna Gutu and Gina Marie Rzucidlo were striving to make history as the first American women to conquer all 14 peaks on Earth that exceed 8,000 meters in height. Anna Gutu, a seasoned mountaineer, was a proud member of the Elite Exped team, an accomplished group of climbers who regularly reach summits across the globe. Elite Exped specializes in tailoring guided experiences on some of the world's most challenging mountains. Gutu and Rzucidlo found themselves engaged in an intense competition, each striving to become the first American woman to conquer the formidable challenge of completing the 14 8,000ers thousanders. Both had already successfully summited 13 out of the 14 towering peaks, leaving only the daunting Shishapangma as their ultimate goal. Rzucidlo, hailing from New York City, had already climbed Gasherbrum I and II, Nanga Parbat, and Manaslu during the summer. She now faced the challenge of conquering the last two peaks, one of them being Shishapangma. As fellow American climber Chris Warner pointed out, Rzucidlo had initially undertaken a multi-year endeavor to complete the 8 thousanders. However, the competitive spirit reached its zenith in the current year as the race for this achievement intensified. Tibet became a battleground of competition, with several climbers, not just the two American women, vying for their place in the annals of mountaineering history.
Anna Gutu and Gina Marie Rzucidlo found themselves camped near the summit of Shishapangma, perched just below the treacherous death zone. They commenced their summit push in the early morning hours, a mere 90 meters or 300 feet from the pinnacle, following the main route to the top. It was at this critical juncture, without any forewarning, that devastating avalanches bore down upon the climbing parties.

You said that mountaineers respect the mountain's? Well I beg to differ. I watch all the mountaineering videos and its heartbreaking to see what they are and have done to one of world most beautiful wonders. The amount of trash, oxygen bottles and countless other trash. Also Hunan waste is a nightmare problem. It utterly unspeakable to know what is being done to that breathtaking mountain. Agreed. They have ZERO respect for the mountain & for nature, their families & their own lives. They've left literally tons of garbage & feces on Everest, not to mention they pay the sherpas very little money to carry all their shit up there & drag their rich asses to the summit, passing dozens of corpses, walking right past dying people because 'summiting' is more important than any scrap of humanity left in their shriveled souls. 🤢 They're disgusting.

What were the odds that Anna and Gina found themselves together at the very end of a long series of separate climbs; both striving for the same goal; both caught in the same avalanche. This was an incredibly sad outcome for all concerned. It's rare that one can judge such a disaster as "unfair", given the nature of the endeavor; but this event seems to qualify. They were so close. Doesn't seem right.
@sneekz07
@sneekz07 9 месяцев назад
So crazy that they were on the same mountain at the same time and both perished at the same time.
@jeepliving1
@jeepliving1 9 месяцев назад
@mehrimazedeh I know, right? "Unfair" never comes into my mind when I hear about mishaps in nature. There's almost always a human decision or two (or three or .... ) that creates the circumstances for a disaster. And nature doesn't care about your goals or previous accomplishments. Even if the only decision is to take on a challenge in a natural setting, that's usually enough to discount fairness, or lack thereof. I just thought that given what these two were trying to accomplish and how close they were to achieving it; I wished nature could have just cut them a break this one time. I guess that's not how it works, though. I guess I need a different adjective to express this. "Unfortunate" maybe?

These "records" seem to get more convoluted with every passing year. The first and most obvious record would be who summits a peak first, then who is the first woman or man to summit after that. I can even see nationality being something to record -- first American to summit Everest or something -- but then it starts to get silly. I think they all know that this can always happen. It must have stung if they even had the time to think about that they had been so close to reach their goal. But dying in an avalanche as a mountaineer, must be the least "regretful" way, at least as I imagine, because that's just bad luck and no fault of your own. When so many deaths on 8000ers are due to bad decisions and unnecessary risk-taking. I want to believe if we could ask them now, they would be content having died doing what they loved, and due to bad luck and no fault of their own.

Climbing these mountains and pulling on fixed ropes that someone else put in place for you and basically following a beaten path in the snow from others just isn't impressive. The expeditions in the 70's and 80's without oxygen were impressive, where they had to do all the prep work themselves. The Polish guys who did the 14's in winter or by a new route were truly impressive. Using bottled oxygen just brings the mountain down to your level instead of climbing the mountain at its level.

These records are getting kinda crazy. Im the first 33 year old that identifies as a mountain and goes by the pronouns mountain/mountain self to actually climb a mountain. I think mountainself is the first to accomplish that so where is my record and medal?

Is it really that impressive when they wear thousands upon thousands of dollars in warm gear? I mean their gloves alone are probably $500. Like, come on

I’m hike mountains but not above 5000m yet. I don’t condone all these races. Hiking is supposed to be therapeutic and relaxing. Is to be enjoyed..

Starting to notice repetitive words and phrasing as well as poor phrasing creeping into these videos. Just my opinion.

How pathetic! Instead of working together like sisters to help each other reach the peak together they acted like greedy fools and paid the ultimate price

Excruciatingly long intro, flat editing, boring american voiceover, excessive use of the word formidable. Earned the don't recommend channel award.
