Catch And Cook - Key West Scavenger Soup.
The plan was soup. The ingredients was up to what I could catch. I pulled a nice 16" Mangrove Snapper from the Backcountry Mangroves using my new Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 combo. Although that was the general plan for the soup, I figured that adding some additional components would make it a more appealing "seafood soup". I hit the pipes to catch a few Shrimp (I got a few but they were small so mixed up some bait shrimp I had in the freezer) and lucked out by spying a really nice size Spider crab hiding amongst the rocks. That quickly became an addition to the soup. So, in the end we ended up with a nice "seafood" soup made with snapper chunks, spider crab, and Shrimp. I decided to go with a bit of Italian flair on this one.
Soup Info:
I created a fish stock using the head and skeletal remains of the Mangrove Snapper. I threw in some yellow onions, celery, carrots, garlic, green onions, and a can of vegetable broth. After simmering for around 15 minutes, I drained the fluid which became the fish stock.
For the main soup, I used the fish stock, shrimp, mangrove chunks, spider crab, and added chunks of celery, red onions, bell peppers, garlic, green onion, and a can of whole peeled tomatoes.
For toppings I used some chopped Basil and Cilantro with a side of hearty toasted bread.
Yea, it was great.
