I think it's important to note that the C5 pan needs to be level when draining the oil and that it can take in excess of 10 minutes for it to drain completely. After that it takes 7qts with a new filter to fill it back up. You know someone will only jack up the front, drain then add 7qts resulting in an overfill condition!

I wonder why you would use dirty oil to lube the filter, when you are just going to use new oil to pre fill the filter. Why not fill it first and use the new oil to lube it?

My Corvette Life except new oil doesn’t have metal particulates from your engine in it...I’ve been doing oil changes and other vehicle maintenance for a long time. I’ve seen oil filters leak from that very thing. Granted it’s rare, but still possible. You’re free to do it how you’d like, of course, but with an engine like the LS V8, I wouldn’t risk it. It’s such an easy thing to use new oil instead of old.

Glad you were able to use the oil filters I sent. I just bought another case of filters for my 2008 C6. Hopefully I hang onto this one long enough to use all the filters.

I suggest gloves and yes fill that filter!!! Hmmm 🤔Owners manual says 6.5 qts...

Thanks Chris, one other thing I would mention would be checking the old oil filter to confirm that the old gasket is still in place and not stuck to the oil pan, it sounds silly but it does happen and could cause some major issues!

I've always changed the oil in my cars. one other step that I like to do, which you didn't include in your video, is once done filling with the new oil, start the engine for about 10 or 15 seconds, turn it off and wait a minute for the new oil to settle, and then check the level to make sure it hit the full mark. Not sure about Corvettes having a oil pan like most cars, never owned one, but I do enjoy watching your "how to" videos.

There's an old method that I use for clearing the oil life monitor. Just turn the key to ON (but don't start the engine) and push the throttle to the floor quickly three times in succession. Now the monitor will show 100% oil life remaining.

Chris your exhaust wrap by the oil filter is doing no good if u need some to do a good warp I live in az free charge will do headers if want

What about having the rear of the car higher than the front so all oil will drain out of the flat oil pan.

mine is a 2003 LS1 and it is 6.5 quarts.

I know how to do an oil change. However, this wasn't always the case. I was thrilled when my dad entrusted me to change the oil, filter and lube our family's 1968 "Kingswood Estate" station wagon. I was fourteen at the time. Everything went like clockwork. I drained the crankcase, spun on a new filter, and greased all the suspension components. When my dad went to back the car out of the garage, it wouldn't go into reverse gear. He checked the transmission fluid to find nothing reading on the dipstick. At that time, transmission pans had a drain plug. I not only pulled it by mistake and drained the transmission but much worse, the engine now had ten quarts of motor oil in it. I understand that if you overfill a crankcase, it can damage the engine but luckily it didn't.

Fun simple video Chris. Something to ponder for you, a lot of guys (especially ones that live in the desert) recommend going to a thicker weight oil by one number when you have an aftermarket cam and valve springs. I don't know if it's completely necessary but there is extra pressure on the cam and lifters from the new setup. Also your catch can may fill up slightly less with a 10/30. I think what you had in your catch can is a good and normal amount for a healthy LS motor.

Chris, we drive our Vettes hard and our catch cans will always get some in it. Great tips for oil changing for the do it yourselfer. Your engine is clean, too. Saw the vid when it was nasty. Previous owner must have lived on a dirt road where it never rained. Ever heard of LS30 motor oil? My friends at Vengeance Racing uses it exclusively and I got it in my Vette. Just wondering! Keep up the great vids!!

Just gives you an idea of how much oil gets into the PCV system. Not as big a deal in a port injected C5 & C6 as a direct injection C7. GM redesigned it again in 2017 to help avoid this. I suspect that they finally got it right in the C8, but time will tell

I did an oil analysis on mobil one vs castrol edge and the bearing material content within the oil was half of that of mobil one. Same driving conditions and temps. Much better oil for the money.

Great job Chris!! Love all your videos !! I'm a Corvette fan from my early 20's i've had 6 and restored 4 of them. 55 this year Yikes !! Of course i've watched all your videos and just bought a 2005 -Z51 about 2 months ago, have a question for you - i love your fender hash marks and would like to advertise for you, im in the SW Florida area. Possible to get a set that would fit my C6 ??? Let me know and thanks for all the hard work !! PS i did buy your steering wheel cover, took for ever but love it .... SR

I do the same thing to a new oil filter, prime it with new oil and I even have a little handy dandy stainless steel funnel which I used to do it with, by the way have you ever changed the O-ring on the drain bolt and I need to check out your video for the oil catch can installation I got to do the same also, cheers😎
