Three spring sessions (recorded on 30.03.21, 9.04.21 and 18.04.21) at Joy Lane, Seasalter (Kent, UK). The first session resulted in a blank, but some large fish topped close in, prompting a second visit to 'The Batteries', which was more successful. The third session was at Admiralty Walk and also resulted in the capture of a small bass and a couple of flounders. Venue details, rigs and techniques are dealt with.

Thank You for yet another fab video! Great camerawork in them all, and your thoughtful and informative commentary blend together with quality sound to create a thoroughly immersive experience. You are clearly a 'thinking man's angler', and I have learned much from sharing your fishing excursions - and thought processes. I used to live in Kent (I worked on the Grain peninsular for over 10 years, and often went fishing after work when the tides were right) and you have definitely captured the character and atmosphere of those Southern venues that I used to fish. Now in my dotage I live in Lincolnshire, and I mostly fish the sandy beaches of Sutton on Sea, Mablethorpe, and Huttoft, and my main quarry is the Flounder - so I share your love of Flatfish. Give me a single decent Flattie and I'm a happy man! Please carry on making your lovely, soulful (and hopefully soleful) videos - they are in a class of their own! Tight Lines!

Good to see another video. I fish Seasalter a lot, though at different marks to yours. I've seen many shad jumping particularly at sunset when the water is very calm and clear. It's a much different breach to bass or mullet, but I only ever see them in the warm summer months..... As for the Sea Trout If anyone has ever caught a Sea Trout in the Swale, then that would be a good indication if they are at Seasalter... You can often see Smelt beaching themselves on the north Kent coast, but these are small so most likely not your culprit.

Thanks for your input Alan - yes I've caught shad before close in on lures - not here, but at Lepe. The fish that jumped clear of the water at Admiralty Walk was more round bodied, hence my feeling that it could have been a sea trout. Catching one would help!

Rod, brilliant video (again!) I particularly enjoy the north and east Kent features - I grew up fishing these beaches. Sea Trout is a possibility - a few were caught in the Medway last year. However (sorry to burst your bubble), they’re almost definitely mullet. They’re always there, and often jump (mainly at dead low and high water). I think they’re mostly thin lips, but there are thick and thin lips to be caught. But re the sea trout - look up “Fordwich trout,” and then fish where the river empties, that’s all I’ll say ;). Lures although they do pick up peeler crab as well. I’m out on the east Kent coast tomorrow- undecided between deal, walmer or kingsdown yet, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. Thanks again!

When I was a kid & fishing the Thames a small fish jumped right next to my line. I also thought it may have been a Trout but another angler & an experienced one at that I might add, reckoned it was a small bass, so going on that, probably a Bass. Nice video by the way Rod. Very enjoyable.

Grew up fishing here, it is actually called Sherrin's alley to the locals, and before all the beach work was done the tide used to come right up to the concrete wall area. The battery is not in that spot it is further west past Admiralty Walk along the beach and you will see the final house on the beach is blue, that is a former Royal Naval firing range and that is the Battery and is known fishing spot. The best mark was actually about 30 to 40 metres behind you on the beach before the house by the beach. All the fish I refer to below were caught at that mark. We used to catch lots of school bass, flounders, the odd plaice, eels, and on occasion a ray or two in the right time of year, and even Mullet in the summer. Now the seabed has changed a lot in the 40+ years since I started fishing this spot it is however a nice spot but would suggest you check it at low water first before fishing it. Certain shingle banks and sand/mud banks and more allow you to see where the fish will be. In regards to bait, you need local worms really dug opposite or near, not blacks, and you should have harbour rag if you can find some, to tip it off. Some very nice fish can be caught all year along this stretch but not on every tide and every condition. Distance is not always needed, in fact if you think as boys we were casting not that far and catching a lot of nice fish. The biggest fish I have caught off here is a 6 lb Bass spinning and a 2.5 lb Mullet on a fresh water line. Most flatties are sizeable too, and the largest Eel was back in the 1980's and that was 3.5 lbs. Not many eels about these days along this stretch, a shame really remember when the bootlegs would be by the thousands, now you are lucky to see one. Nice video, pleased to see you enjoyed fishing here. Not many people fish here but plenty fish, but you just need to know when and the best bait.

Many thanks for watching and your detailed information. I stand corrected about the Battery and will need to give your location a go sometime. I caught my first ever fish on holiday at Seasalter in the 60's on a plastic / metal Woolworth's rod, so I'm pleased to fish there even if its much harder now.
@lifewithwesley
@lifewithwesley 2 года назад
@@rodsangleuk6283 definitely harder and different species as well surprisingly. But a great spot. If you go beach to left of battery or two left of battery seems to be a productive mark with average casting.

I've not heard of sea trout on the North Kent Coast, Rod, but they are certainly present in Sussex. They tend not to feed on the bottom, so lures or even a fly (sandeel pattern or similar) are probably your best bet. That does limit the range you can fish at, of course, although bass and sea trout will chase small fish into shallow water. I've been getting into saltwater fly fishing over the last couple of years - mainly for bass, which don't half go on a fly rod. You even could try a float rig. I've seen anglers on Sheppey catch bass on a float from the shore.

Thanks for the video, Rod. As @Laurie Harper said, it seems sea trout are caught more using lures/fly. They catch a lot that way in Denmark. I invested in some Savage Gear Line-through sand eel lures on the strength of videos from Denmark showing how effective they were with sea trout. I'm after bass, of course. I often take my lure set-up with me when I go bait fishing, just in case I see what you saw with the fish jumping in close.

@@rodsangleuk6283 - You're welcome - I always enjoy your videos. I'm certainly no expert, but when you get those sunny days with clear water, the bass may not be biting on bait, but could well be patrolling the shallows, waiting for a lure!! It's no more effort to take a light 8 foot rod, small reel and lure box on those days. It keeps you busy, too if it's a bit quiet!

Great to see some of the fishing trips with blank or only 1-2 fish, it does reflect the reality rather than making people thinking that there are loads of fish to catch. Thanks for sharing the locations as it helps a lot for new anglers. I think it is very selfish for people to keep spots as secret to themselves because at least for me each fishing trip would cost me at least £50, usually around £100, if I plan to catch fish to take home then it is better for me to buy from local shop as it is a lot cheaper. If we could stop people to using net fishing or trawlers to take less fish then it would be better, the number of fish catch by shore anglers is nothing compare to net and trawlers. Btw, I see you using various rigs, but I guess the 3 rigs would be able to fish anywhere are 3 hooks clipped down rig, loop rig and pulley pennel rig. I am just curious to know how many rods you actually have, i have 4 rods but you seem to have a lot of different rods.
@rodsangleuk6283
@rodsangleuk6283 3 года назад
Thanks @ Thi London. Yes it can be costly, buying bait and the travelling. I upgrade my rods when I can afford to, but still keep and use the old ones which are still good, rather than selling them on. I've bought them in pairs and they have different stiffness and tip actions, so after fishing a venue a few times, you get a better feel for which ones to use. I'm not sure how many I have, since I have quite a few lure and fly rods as well for sea fishing, which I rarely have time to use! I would agree with you about the 3 rig types needed to cover most situations, but I like to make my own and carry a large range of patterns to select from and I would say that I wouldn't go anywhere without a few boom rigs just in case. I have no problem with sharing precise locations - I can't be fishing them all at the same time and I hope others can catch from them and perhaps let me know in the comments section beneath the video that features them.
@mvatoiband
@mvatoiband 3 года назад
@@rodsangleuk6283 I live in West London, the nearest sea would take at least 50 miles, so the petrol, mileages, value of the car and bait would add up. But your clips helped me to realise that I could fish in the estuary Thames river which I didn't know before. I make all my rigs too, I stop buying from the shop long time ago. For me boom rig is to help with the tangle, in the past I spent a lot of time making boom rigs for this main purpose but I realised that by using strong main body rig line, like 80lb, and at east 40lb for the hook line, and also clipped down on every cast regardless of short or long distance would resolve the issue too. Since then I never use boom rig again. I still do not see why you need different tip for certain venue, the only fish sometimes I do not notice of a bite is whiting. But I guess you have different experience. I am only interested about the tip for pendulum cast.

Nice to see you're still connecting with the flounders Rod, I might have to venture over that side myself one day!! I saw fish jumping & topping on the Crouch estuary earlier in the year & someone did suggest sea trout to me then, it was way too early for mullet & no schoolies had been out yet at that time so it did make me wonder, I know brown trout are present in the upper reaches albeit in small numbers. I once caught a parr from the East India Docks when I was a kid & the budget angler documents a sea trout being caught from the London Docks in one of his videos, here-ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-awgaZLoVsgw.html, I think they are probably more common & catchable than people realise, definitely something to think about in the future.
