One thing not mentioned in the video is where to find the poles, you can either find them at garage sales (old hand ice fishing poles) or simply cut the rod tip off an old rod and put it into a dowel. Or you can buy it from the store found here

I hope everyone enjoys and catches some jumbos on the ice!

So i agree with my wife, the grooves for the rod holder needs to be deeper. I would drill a hole about 3/4 of an ince down and another at 3/8 then saw the rest. Plus i would rather a reel type. A small bungy from the handle to the base will be my mod when i make a couple. Thanks for the ideas.

Yeah we found that the reel types did not work the best for us due to balancing issues after a bite where they would stay down

I’ve been using a homemade automatic hook setter but one thing I like about this idea is that it is self-resetting, that is, if the fish drops the bait, the rod brings it back to proper depth. I have to reset mine.

Did you route the edges of the boards after ripping?

We routered the edge of the board after we cut it into size

Nice video I'm gonna make some. Is it possible for the boards to be longer though

Thanks! To answer your question, yes they just have to be the same length when building. Lmk if this answers your question

Any tips for preventing the rod from getting dragged down the hole when a gamefish hits?

We have had this happen and we tie a long string from the pole to the base so that it would have to take the base down as well. You might have to wind it up by just the line It’s nothing fancy but it gets the job done

Eye bolt on the back of the rod handle and an eye bolt on tip down frame. Small but sturdy rope and a large swivel to attach to eye in back of rod handle. Use enough rope to be able to deal with fish and not get ur tip down in the way. I use 6’.

Where did you find the ice rod, you drilled a hole through. I can't find them online.

Hey Keith! We have a place called fleet farm around us that I believe Carries theM but I’d also check eBay under like “old ice fishing rods” they are kinda out of date rods. We found a majority of ours at rummage sales

Try lowering that top wood spacer a little and put a rubber band around the two vertical so the bottom of the rod rests on the rubber band. that will create a slight jigging action when you face the tip down into the wind and it will trigger more bites. Works for me and you don’t need much wind at all, just play with the rubber band height and tension to get to it jigging with the wind

X2 using the rubber band works really well!
