These videos are the best I was clueless and nearly ready to quit…I tried your method of size/shape/color and looking on the water and in the water and on land at the bugs… worked fantastically Can hardly wait to get out again.. until then I’ll be watching more of your videos Thank you big time
Another great episode my angling friend! My favorite question was from Chris in New Jersey. My favorite thing to wear while fishing is the hoodie I got from Ben on the Huge Flyfisherman channel. "I Suck At Fly Fishing" is my mantra. Some days you just hope to suck a little less. Main thing Chris et al is to have fun and keep learning. Every minute on the water is time well spent. I get better every time I fish no matter what the outcome and so will you. I had an INCREDIBLE day last Sunday catching some truly monster trout. It was surreal. But I also know that next time out, I might get skunked, have tangled messes that make me wonder, "how the heck did that happen and what did I do wrong?" and generally SUCK again. But then, there is always that chance that I'll make a lovely cast that leads to magic. It keeps you coming back!!!
I would like to start off by saying thank you Spencer for all the knowledge you share with everyone, eapecially first time fly anglers such as myself. I recently started fly fishing two weeks ago and I will admit I wasn't sure it would be for me. However, thanks to your podcasts and the entire Masterclass series I am very proud to say that everytime I have went fishing in the past two weeks I have caught roughly three trout per day which is way more than i thought i would for being a beginner. I even caught my first brown trout using the fly rod! You took something I felt was impossible to do and simplified it to where I now have given up spinning rods entirely and will only use a fly rod because of how much fun it is. To everyone out there reading this, Spencer and Ventures Fly Co are the real deal and if you follow their advice, you will surely put more fish in the net... Matching the hatch is not always as simple as you would think. Where I used to live, I would venture by boat, a long way up to a series of creeks! Their was a massive emergency of Spruce Months, which look like Caddisflies. The problem is they do not move like Caddis!! They don't dance on the water surface, they just flop and lie on the surface, then the vibrate! They don't do much movement of wings, I'm not sure how they do it, but they do and it is very difficult to make your fly do the same thing! They could lay next to each other but their movement is so different that I'm could never get it right. I tried changing the pattern so it stood out! No luck! Very annoying ! We finally changed our location and were able to hook fish on other insect copies. Thanks! Great show!
Good show.. I would have liked to see a few of the fly patterns you spoke of. I can't tell a Quill Gordon from an Adams; a few simple pics would help. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thank you for this. Taking a week long trip to the Delaware in less than a month, and I've been doing so much research, but still need to learn more about the system.
One last thing Spencer. I loved Shakespeare in high school because I had a great English teacher who had the courage to say, "screw Romeo and Juliet -- we are gonna read Macbeth!"
Personally the blue wing hatch is a lot like me in high school, lots of energy but very little action. Just kidding it’s a fun hatch just a little more technical.
