The Discovery ID Documentary on the bike path rapist, that Dan Oshier Video Productions was fortunate to work on, filming from the air and on location throughout Buffalo, New York and surrounding suburbs.
He Raped. . .
Altemio Sanchez was a modern-day Jekyll and Hyde--a family man who resided in Buffalo, New York, with a wife and two sons, worked nights as a machinist, and concealed a terrible secret. Once a year, after his shift, he'd make a side trip to a secluded spot where women would ride bikes and jog. He was called "The Bike Path Rapist"--until he crossed the line from rape to murder.
He Killed. . .
For fourteen years, the Bike Path Killer mercilessly raped and murdered his prey, eluding police every step of the way. Then, the killings stopped. People wondered whether he'd left town, had been locked up in prison for another crime, or maybe even died. But when another woman's corpse with the same lethal signature surfaced, authorities knew the Bike Path Killer was back.
And He Almost Got Away With It.
For twenty-five years, a series of rapes and murders by a faceless man dubbed “The Bike Path Rapist” terrorized the quiet suburbs of Buffalo, New York. His first known attacks were in the early 1980s, and his spree continued through 1994. After a twelve-year gap, in September 2006 he strangled and killed a forty-five-year-old mother on a rural bike path.

@@strawberryseason I didn't really know him very well, but a friend of mine from work used to go on like camping trips and like to out hunting with him. A real family man apparently. I only had one real interaction with him in the year or so we worked together. He picked himself up with an overhead crane and drove himself across the plant while sitting on the C hook. @@strawberryseason well if I'm being frank, we never really interacted with eachother. We worked the same shift but on the opposite side of our plant. And the plant is quite literally a small city, but I had friends on the other side and would occasionally go and hang out with them on breaks and such. I only really had a few short interactions with him, and truly he seemed quite like a nice gentleman. One of my guys still to this day can hardly believe he had anything to do with those crimes.

I know right, parents tell children not to trust strangers, but they’re not any more or less deserving of suspicion than even the adults that their parents trust. Anyone could be a monster. Your parents’ friend, your next door neighbor, your teacher, your friend’s brother, your boyfriend or girlfriend. If I were to believe in true evil, I would say that 9 times out of 10, it comes in disguise.

willshedo ~ ain't it though??? That's so funny you said that because I thought the same exact thing! Not only that but I was born and raised in Buffalo NY and spent MUCH of my youth on those trails and parks. Most of them are filthy and none of them have ever been safe! Especially between Niagara Falls and East Aurora. And the inner city trails are full of homeless Ppl and drug addicts! This guy was far from the only criminal who frequently preyed on ppl utilizing those paths and parks! When I was a teenager 2 very young neighborhood girls were raped and murdered on the West side where I lived, one on the bike path down near the international train bridge and the other near the psych center... while the bike path rapist was at large and in addition to his victims. That's only as far as I can recall too! I'm sure there were more. I moved out of Buffalo for my children's sakes when the crack dealing hooker who moved in across the street got herself shot in the face. I still have friends throughout the city... it has only gotten worse since I left 16 yrs ago!

Jimmy Happy Smith in his case, his offences were escalating, thus even if it began as a rape for power, control and low self-esteem but it escalated into a murder as the rapes were just probably not enough to fullfill his need for power and control. Very good documentary. However, I have to laugh at the State Police spokesman saying they knew Sanchez was back as soon as they saw the double ligature marks on Joan Diver's body. After her body was found, the husband became the chief suspect. The police leaked to the media that he had "lawyered up" and that a coworker had reported him acting strange that day. It wasn't until a few weeks later, when DNA found on the car's ignition came back matching Sanchez that the police knew he was back. If that drop of sweat wasn't found, I'll bet the husband would be sitting in jail as we speak , based on flimsy, circumstantial evidence. In fact, another man (Anthony Capozzi) was wrongfully convicted of several of Sanchez' earlier rapes and spent many years in jail based solely on eyewitness accounts. For the police spokesman to ignore this and pretend that they knew Sanchez was back when they discovered the body, is disingenuous and an outright lie. Nothing like rewriting history to paint yourself in a more flattering light.

I am from Buffalo and when I was in college Captain Nigrelli came to our Criminology class and told us all about the case. It was fascinating. I believe that this case made him a Captain in the New York State Police, colloquially known as "state troopers." Also, I have to agree with the voiceover about how Buffalo is such a tight knit community. Most people never leave the greater metro area and have no plans to ever do so. Even though Buffalo is a city, it most definitely feels like a small town and has been voted an "All American City" several times. Everyone always remarks about how friendly Buffalonians are, and if given the chance, one should certainly visit...in the summer, lol.

I get tired of hearing these sob stories about murderers who had a rough childhood, don't give these psychopaths any excuses, we all have choices. Lots of people had tough upbringings, the vast majority realised how shit it was and worked hard to get better life for themselves and their children. We didn't end up as serial killers. Don't attribute rough childhoods to becoming a murderer.

In the case of abused children, having just ONE trusted person- whether it be a teacher, a friend, the kind old lady at the grocery store, whatever- is enough to trigger normal emotional connection. In the case they are serially abused, not just by their parents, but by society, they don't turn out okay. So learning from them is essential. If we can reteach society to parent properly and with emotional connection then there's a high chance these things won't happen. In the case of psychopaths with physical brain issues there isn't much to be done.

Killers and rapists come in all shapes and forms.. Yes some are strange kids who torture animals like the stereotype we are led to believe but others are what you would consider the good pals...the workmates you have a laugh with (whether male or female), the partners you sleep with, the emergency staff that help you . Killers are getting younger too and whether this is down to the digital age who knows? All I can say is that I'd hate to put my neck on the line as a profiler these days because it is so hard to define a murderer, especially as anger seems to be everywhere. Thank goodness for DNA
@user-yp3oj5se1i
@user-yp3oj5se1i 2 года назад
No they don't. Killers and rapists come in the killing and raping form. And it's the men or women You have sex with. Speak for yourself. Don't be ashamed about it and say "sleep with" if you really can't stop wanting to have sex with many different people, sleeping with them is not what you want. Defining a murderer is easy. Look at the dictionary definition.

Instead of grooming one victim the monster groomed the whole community. Think about it for a minute, if he was more introverted and less active in the community it would make him, sanchez look suspicious as it would any monster or perp. Instead, he blanketed the community with kindness with the actions of coaching, doing favors for his neighbors and friends. Being a good employee and active in church. This behaviors reflect the suspicions away from him, which is exactly what he wanted. He was caught due to DNA and by the identification of the victim .

Acting extroverted will help to gain sympathy, i agree. But anyone can do that. I am an introvert and look at my pic, i can switch my extrovert energy on anytime. And their victims families should continue to be victimised by paying the taxes that ultimately keep them alive and in good health? Serial murderers and rapists have been studied relentlessly and yet we're no nearer to preventing these crimes than we are any other crimes. It's just my opinion but there is no cure all for sexual murder and therefore keeping them alive at the taxpayers expense is pointless.

Say if we went to play out in the woods over by a plant that was shutdown but still had the power on we played around with the big 10,000 lbs overhead slide cranes.Well we had to be home by 8 pm because it got dark at 8:30 but ,nope, we i got back home at 8:45 my dad asked where my brother was and i thought oh no , god i left my little brother.The plant had these big steel squirrel fan but standing 6' tall and 5' wide, i put my brother in it and run the 2 hooks on either side then took the remote and raised him 10-12' in the air and just left him and got busy doing other things. My daddy tore my ass up and i deserved it...lol i stayed at least 200' away from it!! My brother got a spanking but not like mine lol. When he was spanking me one side of the belt come loose and the buckle of the belt hit me across my lower back and i screamed out from the pain. The buckle left a big bruise and my daddy broke down crying and i gave him a big hug then told him its ok daddy.He never forgave himself for that but i knew it was an accident and my father and i today are best friends, loving son and loving father! He always corrected us after that but never with a belt but the little hickory sticks that just stung some. I would never trade my up bringing for say like a liberal childhood because i know to be a man, treat people with respect and there is right way and a wrong way to live my life. Look at all of the destruction from blm, antifa etc are doing to our country! God bless America and the calloused hands that built and bled for it!!

@saomychau7010
@saomychau7010 Год назад
I believe that sex and perversion is the first and foremost drive for serial rapists, the basic drive due to biology and the lack of brain control over those functions. So, there must be some problems with their brains and the sick development somewhere that caused them to think that they can be 'above' the laws, and also allowed them to avoid being captured and thus escaped 'justice'. The criminals thought they are (were) superior to the controlling authorities in the region, city, and others, and so they can blend into society and basically 'hiding in plain sight' until advances are achieved in forensic science, combined with better DNA research and analysis that brought the accuse out to face justice.

Hi, Dan, well done documentary. lived in wny-(and still do)-when he-Sanchez was committing his attacks/murders. I was afraid to walk anywhere on any bike/jogging path alone. Everyone was glad/relieved, he was caught. I knew a girl who was a friend of one of his victims-Joan. My husband was brought up in Kenmore, NY-a suburb of Buffalo, his parents lived there. NO one ever suspected him-Sanchez! This man had it all-really. He had control-kids, marriage, work, etc; so why? Sanchez had more than many of his nationalty in Buffalo. He was liked and respected-so i don't get it-why do this-murder? If dna hadn't nailed him-i would like to ask him--would he have gone on-and on with assaults/rapes/murders, until caught-if ever?
@Skindoggiedog

Why? Because he liked it. He liked to do it. It was something he really enjoyed. Often the murder is just something you have to do, in order to try to avoid capture. Sometimes it's because the power that killing gives you also gets you hard. Bottom-line: Because he liked it.

Curiously though Idk if it was due to timing of the program or possibly legal issues, but Anthony Caposi's name is mysteriously absent from this presentation. For everyone that was not familiar with the case or from Buffalo and its suburbs, he was an innocent man that spent years in prison because he was falsely identified by the Buffalo P.D as being the Bike Path rapist. Buffalo police god bless um but they really dropped the ball on that one and Caposi actually was released after Sanchez was i.d'd as the confirmed criminal and also received the required compensation. Also I remember there was a series of events that put the nail in the coffin for Sanchez but like I said maybe not enough time in the program... But my friend managed this restaurant in Williamsville N.Y at the time called Sole, and Sanchez had dinner there with his wife and the F.B.I I believe told the staff ahead of time not to touch anything and collected his DNA from his food plate or utensils? I can't remember exactly or if that is where he was arrested idk but that restaurant Sole played a huge role in catching him either way. But barring those two things this was the best program I have seen regarding the crimes. Thx for posting.

Thank you for the insight and for commenting. There are legal issues as to why he was omitted. That could be a whole other documentary...The FBI had agents acting as waiters. Pretty remarkable story all around...

Capozzi spent shit 22 years in jail because of this piece of shit. It was a glass the FBI collected they were following him and collected it after he n his wife left.

Always the perfect neighbor in a perfect town. Always "Oh I was abused, it's not my fault." "I'm mentally ill, I didn't know what I was doing". My mother was a bad mother so I just copied what she was like. All a load of bull in my opinion. Society has to have a reason to explain the awful crimes, but put simply it's the perpetrator's desires and wants...His selfishness that leads to these types of crimes. He doesn't care about his victims or families, just his own satisfaction.

I guarantee nobody had a worse childhood than me. We (my 2 bros and myself, and my 2 litl cousins) grew up in a house with our grandparents. And their 6 kids. 5 addicted to Heroin or Crack. Oldest died of Heroin OD. Youngest died of crack OD. Saw my 1st and 2nd dead bodies at 10yrs old. The uncles stole everything that wasn't bolted down. Abused us. Our "dad" went to prison when we were 6-8yrs old. Sellin heroin to a copper. Didn't see him again til we were grown. Mom wasn't around. Going to school in the morning, we'd literally have to eat cereal with spoons that are burnt on the bottom.

My mother was very abusive and cruel. I've never had a desire to harm or kill someone. Not to say I never had issues but I recognized my problem and sought help for about a year and I started praying and found love through Jesus and have lived a good life

Which simply means becoming a killer, be cruel, is not just about that. It obviously (I think) is one reason that surely have a clear impact, but among some other. Typically I think a sort of "cell" (I dont remember d terms) (just like for autistics but a different one) is "missing"(constructed differently) in their head

This story is very emotinal to me because my mother (36 now), was pregant with my older sister back in the 2000's and she was walking in that path and his car pulled up he then asked her if she wanted a ride, he was ready to get out of the car until another car (Her stepdad and stepdads co-worker) pulled up and got her. A killer could be anyone.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone suggest that it's ok to commit crimes because you were badly abused. Being badly abused, especially over a long period of time, tends to increase the chances that someone will commit violent crimes. I just don't get why so many say 'I was abused too and I don't think it's ok to (insert given crime.)' No, you are right, it isn't ok. It is a precipitating influence on people in that it increases odds for violent behavior relative to populations who aren't badly abused.
