Can RU-vid help me become a better fisherman? In this episode I am throwing a cast net in an attempt to catch shad. I manage to catch some shad and try to keep them alive in a bucket with an aerator pump. Can I make it to a different fishing spot with live shad that I caught in my cast net? Lets find out.

Nice, Alex. Don't get discouraged! Remember this is the most fish you have caught in a single episode.

Catching your own live bait is half the fun. It will make you a better fisherman. It will help you dial in on lure selection as well. Generally, if you have problem with keeping live bait alive you can fix by modifying 3 things. 1) water capacity. Maybe move to a 5 gallon bucket. 2) Bait over crowding. Maybe start with ten in a 5 gallon bucket and adjust accordingly. 3) Water temps. Warmer water less oxygen. Throw a small half filled (so it floats on top), frozen water bottle in the water to keep it cool. Hope that helps. Would like to see your results compared to artificials.

I think it was too crowded for my bait bucket. My result with this catch might be shown on a vacation video. I froze them to use as bottom bait for catfish or whatever might bite. Thanks for the tips on keeping bait.

Hello realisticfisherman when I catch shad I do a method taught by a old guy after failure that if I'm transporting my creel of shad to a different further location I "naturally" revive them first by putting them in a regular old minnow bucket with the holes designed to stay in water when wading for a few minutes especially when it's hot humid sun all high shad are very sensitive to heat and to being " roughly" handled there soft soft scales and slime layer is the difference between life or death of them so more scale and/or slime layer is removed and/or amount of overheating they sustained will play a huge role in whether they survive or not so after few minutes in natural water in temporary bucket then transfer to your air air bucket they will be strong enough to deal with the strong bubbling of the air bucket

Way to go on the channel growth man. You do a great job on you videos. I've never tossed a cast net. I've always wanted to use some big shad during the summer to see if I can find some big. I've always wondered if it would help me learn about the habits of the big girls.

Awesome video!!!! You can't beat fresh bait!! I use bait all the time and it's good when I catch nice fresh stuff!!! It's better than the bait I buy from the shop!!!

I think mine will work better if I can keep them alive. But that will have to be next time. Thanks for watching Rodney!

Shad are one of the hardest bait fish to keep alive. We installed a 1/2 of a barrel that we can take in and out our boat a aerator that pushes water and they can constantly swim in a circle

No wrong way to throw a cast net imo. As long as you get fresh bait, that's what matters. Nice job! New sub here.

Shad are super sensitive. A larger 5 gallon bucket will help but you will still get die off. Keep them cool also. But seems like every time I catch shad for bait 50% die 2 minutes after I catch them. Great video. But a wiggly live shad is usually a better shad.

I know this is an old video but if put ice in the water the shad may live longer. The water is to warm when get from the lake and it kills shad pretty quick.

Put a handful of rocksalt for every 5 gallons of water and Leher the top of the water with ice in the summer if it’s winter just use the rocksalt and They will stay alive along with the aerator don’t put too many shad in one bucket

Awesome video ! The shad lips are banging the hard plastic wall is the reason they are dying ! Get a bigger bucket and line it with women xxxl stocking or styrofoam sheet on the inside of bucket . Use your imagination , They will stay alive a few hours longer . It work for me , fish on ! Thanks

maybe try a smaller aerator?
@RealisticFishing

I was thinking bigger bucket. Hmmm. Shad just might be too fragile for something like this.
@ThatDisneyFisherman
@ThatDisneyFisherman 7 лет назад
smaller aerator or bigger bucket..sure...i did research before and it is possble to have TOO much oxygen..maybe thats what happened..and then adding in the fact that they are fragile fish..who knows?

Realistic Fishing do you use a GoPro to record? And do you have any tips or anything I should do on RU-vid or anyways I should try to fish. And could you help me with a intro?
@RealisticFishing
@RealisticFishing 7 лет назад
Thats a lot of requests Taylor. I do not use a go pro, I use Kodak and Sony action cams. I only have one tip I could give you, and that is to be yourself. I can't really give you any fishing tips because I don't know that many. I am pretty new to fishing lures and stuff. My channel is about trying to learn how to fish from youtube. If you watch the videos and try what I try, you might catch something. I think you are on your own for the intro, just make sure it has music that is not copyrighted.
