Catching Cowboys on Camera! Bodging Electrics 

You could save someone's life by reporting them. Either the installer themselves or the end user who could get a shock from a metal cabinet hung with a screw that's gone through an unearthed cable who was just trying to get the extra shampoo out whilst holding an earthed shower hose...is a bit much but not impossible.

If you let this slip, the next customer might end up with a charred home.

Similar thing with my Nan, 1960's house, ex council, electrics never been touched and a rewirable box, RCD for a shower. Bathroom fitters come to fit an accessible shower in the bathroom (has bath and basin in, loo is separate). "Oh your fuse board is old and dangerous, our 'electrician' can fit a new one for £££££" My uncle is there and paying and says yes. The 'electrician' arrives, ties his horse up outside and takes his hat and bandaner off and gets to work. We are left with a cheap Denmans split load RCD, circuits installed and labelled as 'unknown' no grommets etc on the board, no certs, nothing. In reality all it needed would have been to split the tails into a sub board and they could have hung the shower and 2 downlights off that. All the accessories are old style black Ashley ones, roses are the braded cable and there is VIR all over the place. Absolute tossers.

Hi Nick, Thanks for showing us this. I'm with everyone else on this one, now that you have it on camera and you know about it if you don't report it and something else happens then maybe you could be held responsible as an accessory after the fact. I don't know as I'm not a lawyer. Please report this as soon as possible before some one ends up injured or in the worst case DEAD. It is ok to take ownership of the problem after they have finished and gone, but it will not stop them doing this shoddy work for some one else.

In my opinion this has to be called out there and then. Get your mother in law to stop work and ask them to prove competency prior to continuing. Allowing it to continue is allowing this type of work to continue. They have to be called out on this. I totally understand your frustration and I have been close to poor workmanship before, but couldn’t raise the issue directly as I’m not the client and they wouldn’t do it. But I haven’t been this close where you can actually make a difference. It makes a mockery of us and our qualifications. Hope you get it sorted for your mother in law mate.

Most bathrooms, kitchens, garden rooms & extensions are done like this these days. Builders will say they have their own electrician. But not want to pay out for a real one when connecter blocks and insulation tape will do the job😂

That’s dangerous how they have left that can’t see why other trades think it’s okay to do other trades work especially when it comes to electrics . I’d definitely report them I wouldn’t let them get away with it. Thanks for sharing this with us take care

Had my bathroom done recently, I know 2 or 3 bathrooms fitters through mates or folk I’ve met on site and got some quotes but also got 2 outside quotes from the local companies. I asked every single one who they use for the electrics and who would certify them and they all said they’d always do it themselves along with a comment along the lines of “it’s just 3 cables”. Not one of the companies even asked to see my consumer unit, none opened up a single fitting to check for an earth. It is pretty staggering.

Did they at least check for asbestos before smashing a hole in the ceiling? I know our bathroom celing sadly has asbestos from a test. :(

Even when I would cowboy electrics in my garage and workshop 20 years ago I used protective boxes round all block connectors

My niece had an extractor fitted by a trades person & a new bathroom etc. He had fit a mains powered fan to the light fitting & it kept tripping the electric everytime they used the bathroom. I ripped it out completely & told her it needs an electrician to wire it correctly not someone who isnt registered. He hadn't even earthed the cable in the fitting.

Oh wow that is some bodging! Its only 3 wires.... Left hanging out the ceiling and joined together with contempt lol. You did the right thing, see what happens as a finished job then sort it. People saying to report them. To who? Trading standards wont care, HSE wont action anything. Local building controls probs best bet but good luck with that one as well....

This happened to us before, total mess, live ends in walls in bathroom etc.. no RCD, when we told the client the builder threatened to come round my house etc 😅😅 the client took the builders side and threw us off the job, thank god.

Better to see what the final product will be as we don't know their personal qualifications if it was bad workmanship, as they can find or may have qualified electrician to make good & satisfactory condition to sign off electrical work completed 😮

Previous owner of my house decided to put dimmable lights above the bathroom cabinet - rotary dimmer switch screwed to the side of the cabinet with no pattress box - PCB, etc in plain view - just the thing with wet fingers....

If you'd been called to that house, not knowing it or the occupants, and you'd seen the wiring, you'd have posted a video about cowboys or DIY idiots. You are in a position of professional standing. You know the risks. It's wonderful that you will go back and do the work properly and make it safe. Now make a difference. Report them. They are accepting payment for a job that's not being finished to a safe standard. How will you feel if you hear of a fatality after a bathroom refit? I doubt you want to hear of a parent asking "They were in the bath and touched the new mirror. How could that have killed my child??".

You can always tell a bodge job by the bathroon wall & ceiling cladding - they want to be in & ou as fast as possible - Rather than plastering & tiling that takes extra labour - that bathroom will be back out in 5 years - nearly every bathroom I see cladding on the walls is a bodge !! (sorry)

So so true I’m a plumber and heating engineer basic electrics I will do if I know it’s safe and can turn off but anything above that it’s got to be done safely and not cause a fire or something blowing so price in the Electrican and say this is etc etc the price people try and get more and more money out of greed

Unfortunately I came across something similar in 2021. A major bathroom fitting company did exactly the same as what you saw but they walked away leaving the owner (MS patient) with not only no working lights but the toilet wasn’t even screwed to the floor! Met a representative 2 days later only to be told they don’t fit electrics yet how did the lights, fan and mirror magically appear? And I quote “they were always there” 🤪😳🤨?? The company begins with the letter D and is an animal that loves fish and balances a ball on its head. This is more common than we think and someone will get hurt till something gets sorted. I sorted the issues and used the proper IP rated products which unfortunately flipper didn’t🙄

Nick if as you say the House doesn't have an RCD this could be lethal !!! Who knows what circuits they might "play" with just to make things work ?

Personally, I’d stop the job. Ring the ‘company’ and ask for proof of competency. Until it’s installed properly, I’d withhold payment. Harsh but if they keep doing it, you know there’s going to be big problems. If not there, elsewhere. Let the ‘Spark’ know you’ve checked his work and it’s dangerous. Firms big or small don’t want to pay a Sparks the proper money. So bodgers crack on, probably because they’re told to do so. It doesn’t help the workers either. It needs to be stopped. You know what to do.

100% you need to pull them up and report. They can't keep going on doing this someone will get killed. Only sparks should do electrical work

I’d 100% report him. No doubt. It’s not about being a grass or “he might have kids or provide for a family”…that could be a family bathroom, a child with wet hands touches that new mirror because it’s fancy and the kid wants to mess about, then a funeral. It’s not acceptable.

I went to a mates house once that was a rented property with am extension that has recently been installed. Light circuit kept tripping In the extension... Cut a long story short some bellend builder had taken a supply for 4 double sockets on a 1.5twin off off the light circuit😂

I am not an electrician but don't they need to report to the council about any electrical work that is being carried out in bathrooms. Someone clarify. You should email the company that she is getting the work done so you have in writing that they will provide certification and ask if the person doing the electrical is qualified to do that so you help nudge them into reassessing the situation and provides evidence if you go down the legal route for work done. You gotta think that if you go back to fix work that she paid a professional to do correctly the first time and then you come in to fix it for free and we all know time is not free then that just wrong and then you gotta consider if you don't report it and he or someone he/them has to do work for dies then you feel guilty and it is plain wrong.

I'd question their ability to fit a bathroom if that is the state their electrical work.

Loved the video and graphics. You are right to call this out. Thoses fitters are not competent on the electric side. Do THEY even know about BS7671 let alone have a copy. What they are doing/have done is unsafe. Think how you would code it on an EICR
