It's actually my favorite book in the trilogy: less game (that would just have been a repeat of the first book, also it's a surprise when they have to go back) and more politics and characters. Perfect mix.

The only thing you, and the movie, left out was that they literally turned Finnick into someone forced to have sex with capitol people, and during this he got his revenge by learning secrets of all the high end capital people. That was the one thing I love most about Finnick's character, he turned something so cruel into a person win.

It wasn't common knowledge in the second book either. Katniss only mentioned that Finnick was fairly popular among the women of the Capitol and she was unaware of the fact that he was forced into prostitution after he turned 16. Finnick only came out with his full story in the middle of the third book.

I love Haymitch's and Finnick's (book) characters. At first it seems like Haymitch is a useless drunk-but in reality Haymitch has spent decades training children (all on his own) only to watch them die one by one and self medicates to ease the pain. Not only did he kill many children by his own hand-but I'm sure he feels just as responsible for the deaths of all of tributes he was tasked to train. And Finnick was receiving gifts from people who had abused him or people who wanted to abuse him. I mean, how sad is that? He has to use these monster's gifts to stay alive! WONDERFUL video! Thank you so much!
@margaretschaufele6502
@margaretschaufele6502 Год назад
The author obviously did a very good job of not having 2-dimensional characters. I think even in the film Haymitch points out that all the tributes in the 75th hunger games HATED having to participate in another fight to the death. After surviving that hell, all they wanted was to try and find a way to live with their pain, if/when they weren't being further used/abused by the Capital. That's also something sad with Finnick's story, as well as Joanna's, because when she refused to be a sex slave, Snow had her whole family murdered. I like Haymitch's introduction of the tributes from the different districts, because you barely got to know most of them in the first movie.

Another thing was life after you win. The fact that the victors village is quite run down (but still better than the rest of district 12) because well no one ever wins in district 12 so they never saw any point of proper maintenance. Also the thing the film completely did not mention at all was that the victors are expected to take up a talent/ skill so it doesn't look like after you win you just sit on your arse all day and it's also a way for the capitol & rest of Panem to keep up with them and what they are doing. Peeta's was painting. They expanded on the fact he was a good cake decorator and later camouflage improvisor (?) to make him have a passion for painting. This is referenced at lot in this book and a little in the next one. Katniss however did not feel she was good at anything and Cinna suggested her thing be that she is a designer. She clearly is not interested in any way, shape or form in designing clothes but can't think of anything else that she can do so cinna just does the designs for her and she just approves them. She also knows she can't have her actually talent (hunting/ poaching) be the thing she displays as it's illegal. It was heavily implied that she admired Peeta's talent and she felt like a bit of a fraud for just pretending to have one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think at one point she thought of singing because she was good at it, but decided against it because it was something her and her father shared together and she didn't want to share that part of her with the capital.

A book detail which I don't quite remember if it was in the movie or not was Katniss unusual ability to swim, because district 12 didn't have water areas. At the beginning of the book it was explained her father taught her when she was small, and it came up again in the hunger games arena

Coincidentally, I was specifically there for the Swan House, which was Snow’s mansion in the movie. More coincidentally, I was there on Donald Sutherland’s birthday. (He’s the actor who played Snow.) Back to the topic, I knew it was that elevator they filmed in, and I ride the elevator a dozen or so times just because I’m such a fan girl, lol. You wouldn’t question it if you just look up the hotel, it’s got quite distinctive features and they filmed almost all the “Tribute Center” scenes there.

The other biggest change was that, in the book, the other tributes kept up w/the lie that Katniss was pregnant. In the movie, they suddenly forgot about it. I watched the second movie before I read the book, so I don't mean to complain. Just pointing it out for the heck of it.
@Abby-km6vr

Just as a super quick addition, I believe that Mags couldn’t be understood by Katniss because Mags had either suffered a stroke in the past and could not speak properly, or she had some form of dementia (or some other brain degenerative disorder associated with aging. I’m not expert in these things), which affected her speech. Finnick had known Mags for years, therefore he understood her better, as he was used to her slurred speech. I might be wrong, as it’s not like I have the book in front of me at the moment, but this was just my interpretation of Mags’ character :D

Something you didnt mention in your first review and again in this one, though it does has lost its importance, you can get your name added to the jar for the Games more time in exchange for extra food and heating oil. After the new head Peacekeeper came in, one of Gale's brothers started have to add his name for more food because they lost all the food trade that was keeping everyone in the district alive. The big point was that the Capital had gotten so pissed off that all the food they were giving them was so rat infested that it was inedible.
@Sora-sl8lj
@Sora-sl8lj 8 лет назад

I think the shaky cam for the first movie was a deliberate choice; not for any 'artistic' reasons, but because they didn't want to graphically show children murdering each other, and the audience in general doesn't want to see it. The fight scenes get much clearer when you get the older children (and Rue) left, because it feels less squicky watching them fight to the death. And in this movie, we're dealing with adults, so there's no squickiness at all.
@marvelousTUD
@marvelousTUD 5 лет назад
CPCoulterTweedles There’s also the fact that this film has a different director.
@trequor
@trequor 5 лет назад
That IS an artistic choice. You are doing this story wrong if you don't show children being murdered
@kaileewalden3586
@kaileewalden3586 5 лет назад
+trequor That could have very easily cost them their PG-13 rating. The director of the last 3 movies, Francis Lawrence, said himself in a commentary that he had to do some minor censorship in order to keep the PG-13 in Catching Fire. Say what you want to about artistic integrity and selling out, but I don't think The Hunger Games would have profited enough to pay for a second film if it had been R rated, when a huge amount of its viewership was made up of tweens and young teens.
@jf5419
@jf5419 4 года назад
I liked the use of shaky cam when Katniss was in the games as it made sense to do so however the use of it in other parts of the film (eg. the beginning) just didn't make much sense.

Something I desperately wanted for the adaptation to carry from the Catching Fire book was Katniss' breakdown near the end. Katniss had suffered abuse after abuse and trauma after trauma doing what Snow wanted throughout the story in order to protect her family and loved ones while needing to keep her true emotions internalised but they've slowly but surely build up which culminates in her capture (which is the reason I couldn't help but cringe whenever she was having a hallucination or emotional outburst in the movie). When she awakes captured on the hovercraft (which she thinks belongs to the Capital), she thinks that Peeta's been captured and is being tortured by the Capital. All her fears have been realised so she takes a needle and goes off to murder him to stop him from suffering. When she sees Beetee in the same room as her, she even plans to murder him after she finds Peeta. Sanity Slippage, thy name is Katniss Everdeen. This was quite honestly my favourite moment in the books and the Hunger Games series as a whole due to how chilling and memorable it was and as a result I was really disappointed that the movie didn't or rather couldn't adapt it.

I might be showing my girly side, but I absolutely loved the second book. I loved that Haymitch's story was more fleshed out and you got the added bonus of learning about the other Victors. They had real characteristics and personalities rather than just being seen in a periphery (clever Foxface and physically intimidating Thresh) like the first book. Also, I feel like the world was much more explored. The added mushy faces and love-triangling wasn't too off-putting for me...but that could be because I found Peeta and Katniss's chemistry much more believable on paper lol.

I hated the scenes they cut out with Katness getting bread from Rue's district. District 11 didn't riot over Rue's death, they sent Katness fresh bread as thanks for her kindness. In the second book, when Katness talked to District 11 about Rue and Thresh, her final words to them were "Thank you for your children, and thank you all for the bread." It was genuinely touching, and that was what lead to District 11's revolt.

I will always love that Suzanna gave them PTSD and CPTSD, with all the crap they've been through and the horrors they performed. It's impossible for them not to walk away with serious mental issues. The idea that you can fight in a war as a child and be perfectly fine afterward (looking at you J.K. Terfling) is wishful thinking. I love the scene in the beginning where Katniss shoots the turkey and then flashes back to being in the arena and Gale comforting her and helping her calm down. It's a really touching scene that shows that Gale cares for her deeply. Although I really feel like the love triangle was forced in this series and we could've done without. Katniss has more important things to do than decide which boy she likes better while there's an entire war going on.
@saraa.4295
@saraa.4295 Год назад
Agree with absolutely everything you said, except the love triangle part... It is not a classic love triangle in my view.. There is a complex turmoil where katniss has to decide which side of her nature she wants to nurture.. Gale representing her rebellious side and Peeta representig her compassionate side (she does have, and keep both, but she decides to nurture the other more. Also, by her thoughts about love and relationships we have an intresting way to see the emotional damage she had even before the first game. For example: low self esteem, fear of abandonment, lack of faith in a future (any future) and so on...

I thought the plot points were done great but the characters were a little meh, notably two of my favourites- Wiress and Finnick. They weren't bad. I just had such high expectations for the characters, Finnick especially. The other issue I had was her romance with Gale. Like it was never a good part of the book but it was even lamer in the film. I also love the crazy trends of the Capitol (the vomit-inducing drinks, the clothing, the amount of fakeness and artificial beauty). Little details like that are everything.

This might just be a weird thing that annoyed me but, in the film, after she made her speech about Rue, why was everyone so angry at her, she was only talking about Rue, it wasn’t really her fault that the man got killed.

That drink that peeta and Katnis were given that makes you sick so that you can go on eating is a reference to what, according to some, the Romans did. They would eat as much as they could, then make themselves puke so that they could keep on eating and drinking.

One of the changes that bothered me was the part right after Peeta gets electrocuted by the force field. The group follows along the barrier after Peeta is revived, and in the movie they are able to do so without making the same mistake because Katniss now knows about the "ripple" in the wall. However, in the book she is able to lead the group because she can hear the extremely faint humming of the force field due to the hearing implant she got after her ear drum was blown out in the games in the first book. So really this change is due to the first movie not being as accurate to the book as the rest of the series, so I can't really hold it against this movie.

@@Sugarfairy420 Oh that's right! It's been a while since I read the books so I mixed that up! Thank you!
@NightingaleAnim
@NightingaleAnim 10 месяцев назад
That's not quite true. In the book, Katniss can identify the force field by spotting the ripple, same as the movie. However, in the book, she doesn't want her allies to know this for a couple reasons. 1) Because the knowledge makes her more valuable to the group and therefore less likely to be betrayed, and 2) she worries that telling them in the arena, where the Gamemakers are always watching, would tip the Capitol off to remove the flaw. So, she makes up the lie about being able to hear it with her repaired ear. Since the first film didn't acknowledge her hearing loss from the explosion, including that lie in the film would just add unnecessary confusion.

This is a dumb detail but I really liked the distinct bread each district made. The grain rich loaves from Rue's district was an indicator to Katniss of their gift, and seaweed bread from Finnick's district was sent to Katniss's team during the Quarter Quell to indicate the time their escape was supposed to take place. And the Capital had wonder bread like quality that I thought was funny.

My favourite book and film of the trilogy! Just a small point on the Quarter Quell I interpreted it as Snow cheating, I think Katniss even comments on it herself in her monologue that’s it’s too much of a coincidence that the event set out 75 years ago just so happens to address the problem Snow is currently having, he changed the Quarter Quell to get Katniss into the arena and so Plutarch used this to his advantage

what I always disliked about this movie is that it ignored that katniss hated when gale would make a move on her or when he kisses her because he became so threatened by Peta he failed to listen whenever she would say she was in danger and trying to protect people. that's what I loved about her she was very goal orientated in protected people she loved. she didn't even think she was in a love triangle but the movie just made her decide to make out with him...that was disappointing because in doing that it sort of misses the point of the book. A fanfare and a star crossed lover's wedding being used to distracted s dystopian society into forgetting how evil they are and that's what the movie does! It trades some of the deeper plots for a distracting love triangle

Another great episode. ^^ I didn't like the second book as much as the first one either, but I definitely prefer the second movie over the first film. As a matter of fact, it is down straight my favorite of the four movies. Overall, it was the best directed, best paced and, overall, best film in general. Now on to the third book... which is my least favorite by a landslide. As for the films... I'll leave it for when the episodes come up. :D

Catching Fire was my favorite of the three books, and IMO it was the most faithful book to movie adaptation I've ever seen. I had read all three books after seeing the first movie, and I remember being very impressed with how close everything in the CF movie was to how I'd imagined it. The one thing I would say is that Lawrence is not quite right physically for Katniss (IIRC she's supposed to be a petite girl), but her acting was spot on.

Been a few years since ive last read these books but I do believe that after katniss had her hearing repaired it was better than it had been. I do believe that there was a part where she walked around throwing acorns at the forcefield claiming it was to know where it was but she could actually hear the buzz of it but she didn't want them to know that. I might be wrong and am open to corrections cause again it has been a while since I've last read it.

In the book she told everyone that she could hear it because she didn't want them all to have the advantage of being able to spot the week spot in the force field when she assumed the alliance would inevitably be broken. She could hear SLIGHTLY better in that ear but she was lieing about hearing the force field which is why she was throwing nuts.

the moment I was always struck by that was in both book and film was the straight up execution of the unnamed old man in district 11 who started Rue's mockingjay whistle (wouldve been more powerful in the film if they went into more detail about how she started it and used it to subtly carry messages but still its a big gut punch moment in both)

Honestly after the success of the first one (a lot of which stemed from the community commenting on how FAITHFUL of an adaptation it was) it’s not all that surprising that they kept to the book on number 2 knowing it would spell disaster to depart at that critical stage

another thing I think they left out is Finnick telling Katniss that Snow essentially pimped him out to rich Capitol Members if I dont remember wrong. I believe it was also insinuated that he wasnt the only one abused in this way (this was shortly before the naked elevator scene)

I didn't like the second book quite as much as the first either, but the opposite reasons! In the first I was quite excited to see the actual Hunger Games, by the second I understood how traumatic it was and I loved the tension of the first half with the second hunger games always looming. But I found the actual games themselves a bit disjointed and game-y it didn't feel like it was tying in to a wider point as much as the first. It's feels like a book waiting for the final act in the third.

When this book first came out (and I actually got an advanced reader copy at work), it was a huge shock/twist when they went back to the games. We all just assumed it would be about the aftermath and the uprising, I never expected them to be in the quarter quell, since they were not supposed to be! I always liked that and I think that's probably why the stuff in the movie that happens before the games falls flat.

According to the film special features, the author was a part of the scripting process. She worked with the writer/director to go through the entire book page-by-page to figure out what was important and how to translate it to film. I don't know why she's not credited.
