Today we're out on Lake Ontario, it's late April, and the water temp is 42F. We're trolling with lead core line fishing for salmon. We're opting for simple low-tech fishing today: line, and an American Smelt crankbait.

Great video! I'm jealous. I have an idea for the next video. When editing the video, insert a "Bleep" every time you say the word "folks". That would be funny.

I have been a subscriber of yours for many / many / many years as you already know of seeing me name not to brag but for all the videos I have watched yet this one has a lot of drama and kept me in suspense of watching you catching those two beautiful King Salmon so happy you were able to land them in your net ( whew ) as not to loose them both - very good video .

Yeah, you def need a bigger net. That's the same size as the one I caught. I love those chromes! 2020 is my first time doing salmon fishing. I've caught 4 crome this year so far.

Hi Ivo. Another great video - thx. I am, however, wondering why you stopped your boat during the fight. When we are trolling for Baltic Salmon here in Denmark we only slow down the boat and use the autopilot to keep the boat on course. This way the fish almost always stays behind the boat and it is therefore easier to keep the line tight during the fight. It is my experience that loose lines are a common way to loose a fish. Great video thou. Looking foreward to the next one :-)

...glad you enjoyed the video and I only stopped the boat so I didn't have to fight the fish and the boat :)

Hay Evo,,any thoughts on what rod and real to use and try for this type of fishing
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 5 лет назад
for flat lining, a 8 foot, medium action fiberglass rod, with a slow tip would be best and a baitcaster reel will be able to hold heavier mono or fluoro :)
@michaelsinclair4870
@michaelsinclair4870 3 года назад
Hi Ivo, how long of a leader do you have on the leadcore and is it mono or flurocarbon
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 3 года назад
I like to run a flouro leader and when fishing for salmon, I typically have a leader length of at least 10 ft :)
@austinburger8916

Hey Ivo, you think 18lb leadcore would work okay for Spring Kings? or is it really necessary to have 27lb test?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 4 года назад
18 lb is totally fine - just be sure to use your drag properly :)

Hi Ivo, I have now added the american smelt to my Thundermist tackle box. I received them the other day, but there are no instructions on depth. How much line do I let out for it to reach it's 20' depth. I know a lot depends on line dia. boat speed etc. is it the usual 100' back will be approx 20' down. Thanks Ivo caught a lot of walleye with the SP Viper spoons. Great video by the way. Thanks Mike.
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 4 года назад
Hi Mike....yes - there are a lot of variables - but the 100' rule should do it in order to hit 20' - good luck on the water :)

The St. Catharines game & fish association ramp is a great one and it's open right now ($15 fee) Location is 61 Lighthouse Rd, St. Catharines, ON L2N 7P4 Good luck - the salmon bite is on, big time!!

@@andyoreilly6919 varies each day so be prepared to try different colors and the salmon can be found within a mile of the shoreline right now, as the water is still cold - even as shallow as 40 feet :)

Finish your catch first before doing anything else on them. That would be the least cruel, I think.
