Brad and Bruce flew some gliders at Flite Fest East 2017. Oh, yes, baby... there were thermals!!!
Build Kits and Plans are available!
nighthawkglide...
Flite Fest was a blast! It was our first time there. On Sunday morning (the last day) and before we took down our camp, we decided to fly some gliders in an open field.
We tried many gliders to see which one was the best. Bruce flew his ""Eagle Scout"" (a 12 inch glider) while Brad flew "Gamma" (an 18 inch glider.)
Brad and Bruce are brothers-- just having fun building, sharing, and flying various things-- including Catapult Launched Gliders at Flite Fest East in Malvern, Ohio.
You're next action is to [subscribe] to our channel! Heck, we traveled hundreds of miles to make this so, the least you can do is click on a simple little button! (Pretty please, with sugar on top?)
As always, enjoy flight and enjoy life!

Such a lovely paradox only a builder can appreciate - we love our planes but are happy to see the fly away (as long as it’s a glorious flight)!

Yes, similar to the “fish that got away” story. You are upset it got away, but in return, you gain a story to tell! 👍😀

Nothing like watching that perfect flight. I made a Keil Kraft Sky Jet, with a little rocket motor on it. At Old Warden it circled up so high it wet OOS, but circled back down again to land at my feet, amazing.

That was SOOOO awesome! I am going to have to find one that I can launch like that the next time I am out riding instead of just launching off the side of the cliff like we did. That is so cool!

Great, graceful flights. I used to fly AMA hand launched gliders years ago. My best was just over 60 seconds. I'm too old to throw now days, but the catapult launch has renewed my interests. I have made some from styrofoam egg carton lid, flying wings. They are very easy to make and a penny inserted sideways into the center divider for balance. Just move the penny for and aft to trim flight. A toothpick is glued to the front for catapult launches. They make excellent starter gliders for kids, too! Cheap and easy.

Hi Rod! Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Yeah, my arm couldn’t handle too much throwing. Also why I like CLGs. 😊

Gosh! that was good, kinda remind me of when I was around 11 or 12, I was the only kid with balsa plane (which maybe the only one in town), it's so cool to fly it... one day when I walked to the field, on my way, I passed 3 brothers who played with mini motor bike, I thought "wow they are so cool..." but then around 5 or 10 minutes later those guys came up to the field and watched me playing alone with my plane... not for long we were become friends... and many years later, after we got old, not just older but realy old hahaha, we talk about how we met, I said when I saw you guys I thought you gouys are so cool playing with mini mototr bike, but then he replied no you were much cooler, you were with your plane... that's why we came to the field to see you... LOL nice flight !

What a great story!!! Thanks for sharing! I think it's fantastic that a balsa plane can bring people together and I'm also impressed you stayed friends for so many years. It's so much fun to launch these and watch their graceful flights-- it's a fun time to share with people of all ages! I'm happy you have enjoyed flight and great friends! 😊

I think that easy gliders are better to launch with catapult. My HLGs are heavy enough to be CLG. Maybe with a large catapult...but it is a very good way to flight, there are lot of space or a large field. Wow, I like your very long and high flights!
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders 7 лет назад
Yeah, I suppose you can launch any size glider with a catapult, as long as you have right length and strength of rubber. Certainly, you need a good amount of space to fly these.

@@NighthawkGliders I think I got confused on some labels. Looking at the site, this looks like it would be a sandpiper 12. If so, what was the "gamma" reference? But has your best flight been for the tornado 12?

Well if I make it to FFE next year I'll see you. We're definitely planning to be at South this year and next. Our plan is to have the most epic R/C plane EVER ready for demonstration at FF next spring.As for Nats, it went great. I set a record in Autogyro and finally got a flight over 30 minutes in Unlimited! Hope won several events and generally just did awesome.

Hmm... I'm intrigued about this "most epic R/C plane EVER!" We'll be waiting for that. Congrats to you in the 30 min autogyro! That's incredible! And congrats to Hope's multi-event wins as well! If you swing by Muncie, IN... send us a message, ok? We are less than 1 hr away.
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 7 лет назад
I'm keeping the epic project under wraps for now. It's going to be really fun though. FYI, the 30 minute flight was in a separate event from autogyro. I really want to do 30 with an auto though. No one's done that yet, but it does appear to be possible.Had no idea you were in Muncie. We dropped by there to tour the AMA museum after FFE. Next time!

making the tail of an airframe as light as practical is a rule to live by. at :16, the area (and weight) of the v-tail stab appears to be greater than needed. at times during the video, certain model's appeared to have a 'wonky' distribution of mass. consider whether the mass at the tail of any model can be Reduced. you may know that when the tail is made lighter by one gram, the nose will Need to be THREE grams lighter. and, auw is reduced by four. cheers
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders 6 лет назад
I agree that one of the key factors of keeping a model light is with the tail/tail boom design. You can see my tail boom is tapered on underside to lighten it. Also it is tapered on both left and right sides. There is a fine balance. If I make it too light/thin, it is more likely to snap on a bad crash. I’ve run my v-tail volume thru some ratio calculations and they were within acceptable values. Not enough volume and launching gets wonky. I need a rigid tail for fast launches, but it is really thin on trailing edge. I could lose the stinger grip at end, to save a little more in overall weight, but this model was one of my lightest at 4.75 grams. Which I’m pleased with.
@daviddavids2884
@daviddavids2884 6 лет назад
do you understand that, in no way was "volume" under discussion. i Said "area" and i meant "area". did i mention the tail boom. no. irrelevant rambling. apparently, you have not understood most of my comment. btw, i have never, before watching this video, see a tail grip used. the mass of the grip is wonkifying the DOM of each model. as a courtesy, i point out the very obvious implication of my original statements. if one gram of mass is added to the far aft of an airframe, at least THREE grams of Counterweight mass at the nose will be NEEDED for correct balance. also, (extra) mass at the tail damps normal attitude changes, in the pitch-axis. try to make the tails LIGHTER, somehow. cheers
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders 6 лет назад
Sorry, where I said “volume” I meant “area.” I guess I had “Volume Coefficient” on my brain and mistyped. And, yes, I do understand the principle of removing X grams from tail generally results in a balanced aircraft being 4X grams lighter. I also agree the stinger grip is not necessary and inefficient but I like to use it when launching my gliders. A personal preference. No arguments coming from me, my friend!

thanks for posting. some thoughts. it is not clear whether two-surface cambered profiles are being used in making the main wings of the gliders. if not, thicker stock can be used, and main wing leading and trailing edges can be suitably shaped. doing this will actually reduce drag, by 'improving' laminar flow. a little lift might be generated, as well. cheers googletranslate
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders 6 лет назад
Yeah, we use 3/32 balsa for our wings. This gives us substantial material to sand an airfoil. Funny thing... There are times where I pay lots of attention to making the best wings and have poor results... and there are times where I sand a super basic airfoil and the results surprised me! 😀
@daviddavids2884
@daviddavids2884 6 лет назад
been there. and recently. i used 3/32. results were poor. i looked up old jetco thermic20 specs. 1/4 was used. so, that build is on hold. cheers

what is the best angle to launch a glider
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders 3 года назад
We’ll, that depends on the glider and how it’s trimmed. The best angle to launch is the one that gets the glider the highest altitude with the best transition for the longest glide. That launch angle can vary from glider to glider.
