Catching a wave early and enjoying a long ride from right out back is a great feeling. To get into waves early there are a few fundamental things you need to do and in this SUPboarder video we talk about just that.
The kit used in this video:
Board: Shark SUP 9’10 iSUP
Paddle: Naish Alana 75 Vario

For catching waves early or just catching waves in general the pointers here are most welcome for any beginner. Many thanks for this.

Thanks for the excellent video. Many other videos emphasize trimming vs front loading to start catching a wave. I wonder how a slightly longer board fairs here? I use the Starboard Generation 12.6' x 28''. So far it was hard to completely catch small waves and they were eventually passing under me. Maybe it is my paddling...

Could be your technique. Best to start paddling early and when the wave is getting closer, increase your cadence (paddle speed) so you can get up to the same speed as the wave. Keep paddling until you feel yourself going down the wave face. Hope you can improve and catch some waves soon! Thanks, Beau

Tried to catch my first waves standing on my knees - keeping nose diving, even when staying farther back from the middle. Shoul use this video next time and exercise surf stance padeling on still water

Knee paddling into waves is hard! Keep up the progression though, you can do it! Beau

I have a question.. I've been surfing for over 25 years and have recently jumped down from a 9'5 160L Sup to a 7'4 106 Hypernut Sup. It's obviously a lot different and I've got used to the lack of glide and the way the board tracks. However, one thing is really frustrating. I'm a goofy footer so when I'm paddling toe side into waves I've got it worked out. However, where I surf there is often a strong rip to the North which means a lot of the time I find myself padding toe side parallel to the beach which means that a set comes in I often have to switch the paddle to the other side so the nose of the board is directed towards the beach (otherwise if I keep paddling on toe side I'll end up heading out to sea). Even when paddling with a J stroke (or whatever it's called :) where I can paddle the same side without turning it still does not solve my issue as even going in a straight line I cant direct the nose of the board to the beach which is what I need to enter into the waves. When I switch sides it obviously messes up the timing and momentum meaning I'm missing lots of waves I would have not on my bigger sup. I'm just wondering if there is a technique that I can use to help with this...

Hey Miss. Have your heard us use the term C stroke? It like a J but at the front of the stroke you start your paddle stroke out further from the board and pull into the board at the nose. This keep you straight when paddling small shorter boards. Not sure if your a SUPboarder pro member but this is a video you need to watch : www.supboardermag.com/2018/07/28/sup-paddle-strokes-using-the-c-stroke-how-to-video/ Thanks reuben ,let me know if that helps? ps this series will help too : www.supboardermag.com/2019/10/15/how-to-paddle-small-sups-paddling-straight/

I just purchased a 8’2 surf SUP and it’s very wobbly…I think I need to buy a longer board

Yes a bit longer will be easier when you are starting off and the conditions are rough.

How far forward is too far to plant your foot when paddling in on the wave? On all 3 of my boards, 11'2, 10'6, and 9'2 if i am more than 6 inches forward of the handle I pearl...if i am just a couple inches behind the handle the wave passes underneath...there seems to be a very small sweet spot where i can get on the face and not either nose dive or miss the wave and yet i see guys paddling way far forward catch em all the time...is this possibly a weight shifting issue or lack of forward speed ie not paddling hard enough?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 6 лет назад
Hi, yes, it is a bit of a sweet spot, but it might be that you need to shift your weight back a little earlier. Which boards are you using?
@hrburrell
@hrburrell 6 лет назад
SUPboarder i have a bic ace tec 9-2 a bic 10-6 (plastic) and a starboard blend 11-2. I should mention our break here is a very shallow shore break on a sandbar with normally at least a little texture and chop, (usually a lot) so seldom do we have glassy conditions ans still have rideable waves and the waves don't really build up and maintain an open face for long, they pretty much go from a small flat swell to cresting in about 2 seconds and then dump right on the sandbar, so smallish, semi steep, and then break into whitewater.....less than ideal conditions most days.

@SUPboardermag 6 лет назад
Yes, with the waves you are describing you will have to be quick on your feet to trim the board correctly and prevent the pearling. The chop will prevent glide and the steep waves will mean pearling. Theres lots of benefit in doing some flat water practice to get faster and better at turns and trim - you might benefit from looking at our flat water surf skills on SUPboarder PRO as well as our other videos. If you master surfing on less than ideal waves, you will really perform when you get to better waves... just look at Kelly Slater!

Hey Hrburrell . One thing that makes a big difference is having you legs further apart in a wider than normal surf stance. Then you will find that sweet spot easy on the board and be able to trim you body weight onto your back leg if the board start to nose dive. Thanks Reuben

I'm curious if more experienced paddle surfers fall off their boards a couple times every session? Like when you're you're waiting for waves? I'm trying to transition from surfing to SUP surfing but my ego takes a wallop every time I randomly fall off. I watched a professional SUP surf contest in Hawaii and saw a few of them fall off, but they were on tiny boards and pretty rough seas.. The more experienced SUP surfers I've surfed with never seem to have balance issues in our usual 1-2 foot waves.

Also curious if flat water paddling, like on a lake, would increase my balance? I can paddle for an hour on flat water and not fall off but in the ocean it's a different ballgame... but maybe it helps with enough flat water practice?

Hi and thanks for the comment. It really depends on the volume and size of a paddler's board. Some experienced surfers might choose to ride a slightly bigger board that offers them a lot of stability when paddling. Pro SUP surfers would tend to ride very small boards and yes, they do fall off very occasionally. The ocean is a the hardest place to paddle as you have bumps you sometimes can't see which makes it hard to balance. More practice in the ocean is always best, especially on calmer days but you can still get a lot from paddling flat water. Make sure you do some practice with step back turns, paddling in surf stance and moving around on the board in the flat water to practice for the ocean. My guess would be that a slightly bigger (more width and possibly volume) board would help you progress. Or working on techniques like paddling in surf stance and learning to brace with the paddle. Thanks and good luck. Beau
