We take a look at CatDog, a show that you wouldn't think would be very political, but then you find it has an episode about how the prison-industrial complex sucks and capitalism will trap you in speculator bubbles. Yeah, it's going to be one of those videos.

I love CatDog and all, but the older I get the more depressing the show gets. I give it credit for being a kid's show with the message that life isn't just unfair, it's downright brutal, especially if you're different or around the poverty line. Cat's supposed to be the unreasonable jerk for wanting to be more than he is. He either gets in on a get rich quick scheme or tries to get the respect from higher society, and we're supposed to disapprove of his behavior... all the while being bullied and assaulted by 3 angry, hateful dogs and constantly given the business by an obnoxious rat that lives at his house, sponging off of him (unless I'm incorrect for not seeing a specific episode where he rightfully owns his hole in the wall). And I get Dog's supposed to be the counterpoint of the positive person making the best of a bad situation, but it feels like a good chunk of the time, Cat's driven to wanting to escape the lousy hand he's been dealt. It's basically the most realistic cartoon I've seen as far as messaging goes.

It's because he goes about it in scummy ways, usually to Dog's detriment.

There's a message in there about being in a desperate situation and hurting the few people who love you in there that makes it all the more depressing. Like he's driven to hurt Dog because he was pushed too far. And the world at least sort of likes Dog to some extent. The Greasers aren't quite as mean to him as they are Cat and the fact they're conjoined. Dog represents making the best out of a bad situation, Cat represents what rejection and misery can do to a person. It's like Squidward. Sure, you WANT to hate him because he's mean to Spongebob, has a high opinion of himself, and is surly and dismissive to everyone, BUT then you get the unappreciated artist, who the whole world (except Spongebob) scorns that has to work a miserable, low paying job while seeing his dreams get further and further out of reach. So you really don't know who to root for.

THANK YOU i never liked catdog simply cause of how unfairly abusive it was to Cat. he wasn't always squeaky clean but it seemed most of the 'humor' came from seeing how much they could make Cat's (and to a lesser degree, Dog's) life a living hell.

Eee! It's here! I knew you could get some good commentary out of this one. "Escape from the Deep End" was really impactful for me as a kid. I liked the sense that the ending wasn't just ironic with them escaping one prison to end up in another but as a sort of call to action that the battle is not over, that opposition to oppressive authority must go on in all settings. In a world of Sunday school messaging telling kids to be obedient, Catdog was out there radicalizing kids. 😉

The episode that sticks with me the most is the one where Cat joins a club for cats not realizing it's actually a hate group that wants to exterminate all dogs. They even wear hoods (shaped like fish) and watch an anti-dog propaganda film which was very obviously based off The Eternal Jew. It didn't get shown very often from what I remember.

It’s hilariously ironic that 90’s nostalgia blind purist whine that cartoons today are “pOlItIcAl”, yet we have cartoons from the 90’s like CatDog showing off political themes like this episode that a cartoon of today would absolutely do. And that’s not me knocking on either cartoons from the 90’s and cartoons of today because both the 90’s and today’s cartoons have their fair share of great cartoons and shitty cartoons. But going back to the purists who claim everything from the 90’s is “fLaWlEsS gOsPeL”, if this CatDog episode came out today, those purists would definitely once again complain about “pOlItIcS iN a KiDs CaRtOoN” as if cartoons back in the 90’s never did that.
@mightyfilm
@mightyfilm 10 месяцев назад
First off, they basically moved the goal post for what "political" means. It's not even messaging at this point. "Political" means that it has a black person or a woman in the cast. All I get out of it is a fake moral panic, the dumbest one in history, that all balances out to "you're getting old and close to death, so blame everyone else for it." It's basically the same "why can't we get a show as brilliant as Jabberjaw? I feel sorry for kids that grow up with Ed, Edd, n Eddy because it's not my taste as a person pushing 40" that crappy message boards had like 20 years ago.
@ZemeckisTEN
@ZemeckisTEN 10 месяцев назад
@@mightyfilm Okay, no. Political isn’t featuring someone who isn’t a cigendered straight white male in a prominent role. It’s called diversity. Whether it’s handled well or not depends on the piece of media. But idiots like you saying that that shit is “pOlItIcAl” is almost as bad as someone saying it’s “sJw PrOpAgAnDa”. Fuck off.

Yeah, as a kid, I never got Ren and Stimpy vibes from CatDog. It was closer to Rocko's Modern Life - maybe not as fast-paced and insane, but definitely big on plots that exaggerated the frustration of trying to do a simple task when everything in life seems to be conspiring against you.

I never imagined this show had ever talked about politics and capitalism before. Whenever I saw these episodes it always passed me by. Well, I already knew that this cartoon has deep episodes when looking at it in a certain analysis, but this one is deep and also teaches in a radicalized way but in a way that they understand about politics. And I found it interesting about this part of "Escape From The Deep End" about you always following the rules, no matter how stupid they are, only to be punished in the end for following the rules. The rules part for me was the most interesting, because I identified with it a lot. Sometimes, you follow the rules and for the most part to the letter, always being careful not to break them and always trying to stay in line, and the other time you break it out of the blue and don't even care, and instead of that person being punished , you are punished. Something I've already observed at my school. There are people there who break the rules in every possible way and don't even care, and others who never break or have broken the rules before, always staying in line or trying, and when they break they are punished severely, the others who should have severe punishments are punished very lightly..... even too much. But in this case of this episode of Catdog, it is shown that you can be punished even for following the rules and unfairly. I understand that you should punish people when they do something they can't do, but some people are punished unfairly or receive punishments that other people should receive in their place.

This was one of my favorite episodes of the show growing up just for the stories, I legit didn't even consider the political context of both until this video but *vaguely* connected the plots in my mind. It was way easier for me with "The Collector" than the former episode to me. The one thing that always turned me off of the show was that I didn't like seeing Cat constantly get torn apart against his will but I've seen way worse, maybe it'll hold up better in retrospect.

CatDog wasn’t one of the 90s gross-out cartoons, it was one of the 90s odd couple cartoons - still Ren & Stimpy, yes, but also Angry Beavers, 2 Stupid Dogs, Pinky and the Brain, etc. I’m pleasantly surprised it seems to hold up so well. Most of this stuff went over my head as a kid, but I guess Jim Cummings sounding exasperated was a big draw for me.
@retroscenery
@retroscenery 9 месяцев назад
You’re not a huge fan of Ren and Stimpy, but you like Catdog? It’s a shittier version. If the show was about two misfits banding together in spite of ableism, it may have worked. Instead, cat and dog are just as mean to each other as their oppressors. The only likable character is that Latina bird (I forget her name. I haven’t watched this show in ages.) Imagine if Ren and Squidward didn’t care about Stimpy or SpongeBob? I think both respective shows would suffer from a lot of the same issues as Catdog. It’s interesting you called Catdog political. I don’t agree; I think “Off the Deep End” is merely a spoof. I think this show missed out on a lot of potential ableism commentary. Pelswick did a better job at that (what an underrated show!) Rockos Modern life is a better example of a surprisingly political cartoon. I rewatched it as a teenager and picked up on so much I missed as a kid. I liked Catdog as a kid, but I no longer do as an adult.

I love the early seasons of SpongeBob, but those don't feel too wacky and zany. I prefer more slower paced, down to earth shows like Hey Arnold!, Bear in the Big Blue House, Rolie Polie Olie, Adventures in Wonderland, Blue's Clues, PB&J Otter, Rugrats, Arthur, Tokyo Mew Mew (It's an action show, but has many slower paced, down to earth moments), etc.
