unbelievable driving by both. the track is really narrow and slow, and yet the guy in the Ferrari is not being humiliated by that crazy caterham with a superb driver, just a bit beaten... Surprised how much faster the Scud is on the straights though, and most of all how fast it is on fast corners and direction changes. really impressive from both cars and drivers.
You say that, but in this ones case, it has the aero screen, and combined with the fact the car is so narrow means its actually more aerodynamic than you'd think. Also caterhams unlike even modestly priced sports cars, has almost a perfectly flat floor, with a 15 degree upward tilt on the rear overhang, meaning the car doesnt produce much in the way of lift, so traction is also excellent. One of these has a damn site less resistance to moving air than the car it's chasing :)
Thanks for the info! Very interesting, I didn't know that. My only experience driving a Caterham was years ago with a Seven fitted with a chipped and tuned 1600cc engine from an XR3i - a rocket to 60mph then it ran out of grunt a bit although we did get 105mph out of it IIRC. It had the usual Seven-type windscreen which would not have helped. :)
The tyre on the Scud had been on the car since it was new in 2009, and it was Pirelli PZero Corsa. But I think the rubber was a bit hard, since it looked the same after about 10 trackdays in Norway and 1 trip to Nurburgring, driving there for 3-4 days, pluss 1200 km on the road down and back again before this day :-) Anyway, we had a great day with some nice laps :-) The R500 is a great car, and very fast! :-)
The Caterham catches up in brakeing zones and corners but gets left trailing a little on the longer straights. Dogged determination wins the day thou. Entertaining clip.
I keep coming back to this video. Sometimes I don't even watch it, the noise is good enough on its own. Only driven a Caterham once, but my life goal is to own one.
The R500 Superlight starts at £41,995. You can then add the following options which obviously put the price up; Sequential Gearbox, Launch Control, Carbon Induction Airbox, Race damper package, Lowered floors, Data logging Stack Dash instrumentation, Heater, Track day rollbar, Battery Master Switch, Interim Catalyst bypass pipe* (track use only) Full roll cage
Used to own a factory built '89 Caterham Super Sprint 1.7 and it was a great car, but a little expensive to have sat in a garage 6 months of the year. 3 years ago i bought a mk1 Eunos and to be honest, I have more fun in it. I'll never sell it. It's not as fast, obviously, but it's far more fun to drive the tits off it on public roads as the overall speed is much lower. Best £600 i ever spent!
outstanding plus inspiring. I couldn't help thinking "toss the codriver out!" but you passed him like a gentleman and safely. Well done. My toes are just starting to uncurl. Great sound recording without too much clipping. Well done indeed.
Good piece of video. Entertaining. I have a Super 7 1400 Hayabusa. Sequential gearbox helps lap times. You would have gotten around him earlier sans passenger, which adds a good percentage of weight. 430 had a little more top end on the straight, but you were generally holding a tighter line through the corners and he was holding you up there a bit. Stock Avon rubber?
The lad in the Lotus is cracking it on in fine style! It must have been aggravating for the Ferarri driver to have the Lotus in his rear view mirror so often then to pass him! Excellent video.
hats off man, you hold the 'I was held up (for a bit) by a Ferrari 430' badge, stunningly brilliant. But I too am intrigued about the white rocket in front near the end, looked pretty damn quick??
Beautiful! 42 grand never bought you so much car! makes the ariel atom look like a kids toy! After you passed him, your driving pattern was totally different, great vid!
have to say i want a scuderia, that ferrari was awsome also pulled away on the straight and tyres probably let it down eventually, but for a heavier road car it was better that i expected compared to the r500
I love all the smaller track car companies like cater ham, radicals, and westfield. I think they are more fun than ferraris and porches on the track, but driving any of them would still be awesome.
I used to have a Dutton pheaton, basically similar to this all plastic with a 2.5 litre straight 6 & 3 twin Webber carbureters. . Power to weight made it crazy fast .
He was doing well but you could really see the car wobbling side to side coming out of the corners once the Caterham caught up. I can imagine driving a Ferrari is hard work compared to a Caterham as the 430 is pretty big and the Caterham is nothing really.
On straight and large curves the Ferrari has the power to keep away the Caterham...but on tight corners the acceleration, lightness and awesome chassis of the Caterham can beat easily more powerful cars. Chapman was a genious and this simple, yet amazing car proves it.
One of my favorite things to say after doing that to a Porsche or Corvette with my Caterham on a track day was.. " Not bad for a factory built car.. What did you pay for that?...The driver of that car knew that track cold and knew the lines... Impressive.
I think this illustrates the point that you can go fast (relatively) cheaply, but if you want to go fast in comfort its going to cost you about as much as an F430...
Love that track profile! Those tight corners one after another and nice proportion of elevation here and there. We don't really have tracks like that in Finland. Ahvenisto is the only comperable that comes to mind. And it's a nice "classic" track. Good driving btw. Looked like lots of fun.
Ok... My Locost project will be put in practice soon... Maybe isn't as fast as this Caterham, but will be faster than the "sport cars" that we have here in Brazil.
