No they were arguing about whether sandwiches in general, were created by the Chinese, not pastrami sandwiches specifically. Pastrami itself is Romanian anyway.

In China, outside of Guangdong and Hongkong, people actually eat Char Siu only occasionally. In the northern regions of China, people prefer to eat grilled skewers. China has a very diverse culinary tradition; even neighboring counties(China has 30+ provinces, province is some , each with varying numbers of cities, and each city often has ten or more counties.) can have significantly different food traditions. Therefore, it's actually quite difficult to identify "most popular dish" in China. Actually, China's diversity in culinary culture often leads to interesting misunderstandings.
