Fully restored military Caterpillar D8 pulling out huge log from a ditch. Check out our website www.bostonpowercat.com for more videos, pictures, forum and blog.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video and took the time to comment 👍👍 Have a look at some of our other videos if you are interested in the big old Cats!!
Started many of these Army units with the pony engine. Start the pony, engage a clutch, let the diesel turn over for a while ( depended on temp ), when ya think it was ready, turn on the fuel. Have to laugh about it, but it was so simple it worked.
+Anthony Macneil Cheers 👍 Yes it's pretty much like new, it's been fully restored, completely stripped and rebuilt from the ground up. If your interested have a look at our website www.bostonpowercat.com and in the photos section you will see a restoration gallery of the D8 and you can get an idea of what it underwent. You looking for one to do some work with or as a restoration project?
Thanks very much, yeah it's in pretty good shape, we literally tore it apart and did a full nut and bolt rebuild. If you have a look at our website www.bostonpowercat.com you will see some pictures on there of the restoration. Cheers
Bostonpowercat I also want to say be real careful cranking up that pony motor, thumb OVER the crank and NEVER UNDER the crank.(If it kicks back,it could break some bones in the hands,OUCH!!)
+Bostonpowercat I live in western Iowa and more than a couple of the farms around me have a D8 cat setting around ,,, usually used to build and maintain terraces ,,I personally don't have any tracked equipment aside from a couple large farm tractors with rubber tracks I have 2 large articulated 4x4 tractors similar to the 830M both large steiger tractors ,,the larger of the 2 is powered by a 500HP 8V-92TT aftercooled Detroit 2 stroke diesel
The older Cats are not so common in the UK unlike the States, but the US is their homeland. The Steigers are meant to be great tractors from what I have heard, the Detroit 2 stroke is screamer, bet it sounds awesome?!!
Bostonpowercat yes it's a screamer for sure ,, they earned the nick name screamin jimmy for a reason ,,,only way to silence a 2 stroke detroit is to shut it off
Track hinges rather stiff!! Sure is cool to keep this beast in working condition. OK, its military origins, but a fresh cat yellow paint would be the cats meow.. thanks posting.
We have a few D8's, the others are all in yellow so it's nice to have this in green for a change and yes we wanted to keep it true to it's military origins. Tracks are old, but brand new so need a bit of wearing in and freeing up! Cheers 👍
Love your vid's. Keep them coming, record every movement these machines make if possible... But wear an old worn khaki green tee whenever you move the military stuff. Cheers, Mark
Glad your enjoying the vids, comments like make all the effort worthwhile 👍 Just curious why wear a a khaki green top for the military stuff, in keeping with the theme?
I did..and I subbed..would like restorations of these old timers..and if you search out these old guys that would be nice to view...anyways..thx..and keep making the videos..
iamrichrocker Great stuff!! thanks for the sub :-) If you like the restoration side of things check out our website www.bostonpowercat.com, in the pictures section there is a whole album of photographs showing the restoration from start to finish of the D8 in this video.
Boy Howdy, ye olde crank came in a gnats rear end of winding you up! Good old 1/4 turning. I've had it happen to me too so we all learn. Did I see a tank under a tarp/shed?? All sorts of goodies to break into daylight with!!
Well this eye sight of yours seems to be getting better and better!! Another good spot, yes it's a VT55 recovery tank, have you see our tank video of it crushing the VW Polo?
Thanks :-) If your interested check out our website www.bostonpowercat.com, in the pictures section there is a gallery of photographs showing the restoration work carried out on it.
Lol good to hear from you :-) No cucumber kitty, this one has had a full rebuild from engine to running gear so just a prrrrr!!!! Good spot on the 666 wheel, hadn't even noticed until you mentioned it!! It was in red lead after sand blasting and before the yellow went on.
That is a sweet old 8 all right. I'd need a blade or something to doodle with. I'll let you off for no kitty. I can always rewatch something that has it. Cheers Guys! Good One!
Lol yeah a power control unit would be ideal !! She needs a bit of running in first, bed those squeaky tracks in, but that would be a good way 👍 how's the quarry going?
Yes they are new so just bedding in, we have a new video of it mole ploughing this week and they sound much better already. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pm-cXVmq6QY.html Cheers
+Bostonpowercat Mole plow, I've never seen that done on a field. I've seen it done to lay cable and irrigation lines. Never just for drainage, here they lay in plastic corrugated pipe from a big roll.
The best way and long term way is to lay the corrugated pipe like you mention, but it sure does cost a lot, mole ploughing is a very cheap alternative, but can be very effective. The field we did it in is just used for grazing so not really worth the effort/cost of laying pipes. Where you from? Cheers
Great video, but you should tow trees from the bottom end so that the branches don't dig into everything, so much! Although, i don't suppose the branches catching on things, is much of a problem when you have a D8 doing the towing.
Yes very good point, unfortunately the bottom end of the tree was on the other side of a stream/river so couldn't get the D8 to it and we didn't have a long enough chain to reach across to it. The D8 has plenty of grunt though so a few branches didn't worry it :-) Thanks for the comment 👍👍
Is that a log?--looks more like a long stick to me but I loved the old cat--looks like the track gear is still in first class shape, the cleats look good..It should be worked in a loving respectful way..Thanks for posting..
Just looking for one with little or no work involved to putter around out in the woods to clear roads then maybe later restore it if I win the lottery lol
+Anthony Macneil lol yeah if you need to do anything major like new tracks or pistons and liners things can get quite expensive pretty quick!! You should be able to find something to do n could condition if you take your time and have a look around. Not sure how many are kicking around n Canada, but the U.S has plenty unlike the UK as it is their home country.
PLEASE, I BEG OF YOU.......Don't wrap your thumb around the crank handle when starting !!!! So many people have broken their thumbs, wrist, hands, and even arms doing that. Nice Cat by the way :)
Yes they are a new set of tracks, but they weren't run for a long time, the machine has only done about 6 hours since a full rebuild so everything is just bedding in 👍
Yes I'm very aware it can be expensive to fix that's the sad part with me. Will have a look at Heavy Machine Trader in Nova Scotia have looked in the past but most dozers were not old and way out of my budget. Are they heavy on fuel and how many cylinders?
+Anthony Macneil Have a look round the forums, you might come across something, your right though a lot of the street ff out there for sale is the new stuff so you need to look in the more niché places. It's a 6 cylinder diesel, holds about 55 gallons and that would do a 8 to 10 hour day depending how hard you were working.
+Anthony Macneil ps that's UK gallons which I know are bigger than a U.S gallon, not sure about Canada though. Also that info is for the green D8 8R not the one being tow starting or doing the towing, they are newer!!
The guys that drove them for a living must have been tough. No cab or comforts. How long before you'd wreck your spine? I know forklift drivers in bumpy old haulage yards get back problems.
Where I come from, bulldozer means it has a blade on it. This is just a crawler, and pony motor? I know it as a pup motor, have heard it called a donkey motor, but never a pony.
Your right she is a bit squeaky, but she has had a new under carriage and has only been run a couple of hours so everything is still tight, give her a couple of days work and everything will have bedded in and be squeak free 👍
Don,t waste your time greasing link pins....if you want you can use SAE 30 oil and squirt some on the links but even that will not penetrate new pins and links as they are a tight fit with no bushes or bearings.
My friend i speak and can read english too y write in Sanish because many peope use the google traslator or the RU-vid traslation Thanks apologize me the new letter will be in ....Englishh jjajajaj Bye My Friend ! In the old D8, y write This tractor was many time stopped and the pin and bushing of the traks are rusted and frozen jajaja Greeting Juan or John
Hello!! Sorry for the language confusion, we can use google translate, but it never seems very good for some of the technical words!! we have a friend who speaks Spanish so it's normally not a problem, but he's away at the moment :-( I take it you mean the tracks are squeaky/noisy? They are a brand new set of tracks on it after a full rebuild and it hasn't been run much so they are still tight and stiff therefore making a lot of noise! With a bit more work they will settle down and the noise will go. Greetings to you Juan from Bostonpowercat :-)
i am a old mechanic in machinery industrial CAT and farm IHC when America was America and the mesurement was in INCHES ! Our work was hard with temperatures in summer 40! in winter sub zero. Great website 👍👍 you have some great pictures and can see you have undertaken some pretty impressive jobs. Things certainly have moved on in this modern day and awesome for better some for worse. Great to hear you are still active and working at 67 years old, that's impressive especially in this industry. The ford f100, is it 1962? That's a great classic right there. Great to hear from you :-)
+Anthony Macneil runs cheap...depends what condition you pick one up in and what needs doing to it , but it is a Caterpillar, you can still get all the parts, but being Caterpillar the parts aren't always cheap!! Hope this helps??
This is it's original colour, it was used by the military in WW2, so to keep it all original we kept it's original colours, we have a few other D8's in the traditional Cat yellow so it was also nice to have something a bit different !! Cheers 👍
