That was awesome Scott. I am new to catfish and sturgeon fishing so this video was great from me. I'll be rafting down Hell's Canyon next week and want to catch some catfish.
@@garyfujinami9911 right on!! Hells canyon is awesome! There’s not a ton of catfish down there. But sturgeon in every hole and the smallmouth fishing is fantastic! No limit on smallies. Just throw a crawfish pattern and you’ll do well.
Jessica Caldwell it was quite the adventure! I still wish we had filmed the whole crazy trip, being stuck out on the river until 3am.. Got real western!
Great video. We plan to visit this weekend. Staying at the recreation area. Do you think fishing will be good from the bank? Good meaning it’s worth the drive? Thanks
Oh ya, it’s prime time for catfishing the Snake. Water is high, so they are pretty spread out. But they come up into the shallows at night. Lots of guys are doing well down there now. Good luck!!
Thanks for the tips. I just started catfishing on the snake here in washington this year. I caught a 27 inch 9 1/2 lb blue cat last month. Biggest so far!
HI Scott I really enjoyed the video. I was curious to your trolling motor set up. I have a 12ft Valco and am thinking of either a two electric trolling motor set up or one larger one. Could you share your set up? Tine lines buddy!
My bigger motor is 55 lb thrust, it does fine, but I just happen to have another 30 lb thrust and I joking call them the “twin turbo’s” for getting to and from my spots a bit faster. If it’s your only source of motor, I would go for a single 80 lb thrust to get you to point A to B. And always have 2 batteries.
Nice video Scott. I’m Kelly with Gem State Kats we put on catfish tournament on the snake river you should check us out if your not into that sort of thing then we should hook up and through some fresh cut bait.
Thank you! Is that an annual tournament or you guys put on multiple tourneys throughout the year? I’ve always wanted to do the annual Huntington derby, but I’m usually chasing salmon in Riggins about then..
@@louiewillis2668 spring summer and fall are all good. The moss in the snake middle of summer is probably the biggest factor that can make it tough. Not much going on in winter though, they get very lethargic when it’s cold.
Good stuff!! New to the area and took my wife and daughters out for a day trip to Steck park..caught my first fish since moving out here in May. Landed a 5lb channel whisker fish! My wife did catch a 5" large mouth who got greedy and swallowed up her big chunk of bait. The cat was good eating..can't wait to go back!
That’s awesome! We’ve caught some big smallmouth by accident down there using that fresh cut-bait as well. Once you figure the river out, you’ll take home many more whisker fish!
All of the moss collects on the swivel and when it does, the long leader allows the bait to stay out of that clump if moss on the swivel. For awhile anyways.
Any concerns of running into too shallow of water and hitting bottom with your motor? I hit bottom on the snake twice now and it's no fun! I sit about 18 inches in the water with a v hull and 140 on the back.
Oh yes, I destroyed my 20 hp down by Nyssa years ago. You have to be very careful as that river will change yearly. The channel can completely move. A jet is by far the best on the Snake. And I try to always go up river in case something happens so I can drift back to the boat launch in case that happens
If you think you could hit something in the river with an outboard, are you running in RUN mode, or TILT mode? I only use RUN in reverse. If I hit something at 20mph in my skiff my motor bounces off it instead of ripping my transom off.
That song is from the Epidemic Music archive that I use for editing my videos. I don’t believe it’s on the radio. But you can download it. I think they do free trials. It’s a great fishing song! When I get home from salmon fishing, I’ll look up the name of it for you.
Break off the top small T portion of plastic at the top of the slider; otherwise you are more apt to get your line caught on it and weaken your line with rubbing on it.
I use this trick for fishing weights I get JB Weld 5 minute and glue a piece of 6 lb line to a rock make a Lube on it and use it for a sinker so it does not cost but a penny per sinker
I was there last month, at Oregon side😀Zzz ... I can say it's a big cat I ever catch.... I love snake river... Big cat.... but it take me over 5 hours to get there 😀😀.... I plant to go again this July.... thanks for teaching me... 👍
Hey Scott, we're headed to Brownlee Reservoir next week and I was wondering what area s I shouod target for cats? I do have a boat and plan on finding some Crappie as well. Great video and thanks for sharing!
I really like fishing the headwaters for cats this time of year, btwn Farewell Bend and Stek, where there’s some current and deep water middle of the day. Haven’t been in awhile, so I’m not sure on water levels, but that’s where I’d start.
@@SilhouetteOutdoors Made it back and didn't put the boat in as the water level was really low at Farewell Bend. I wasn't sure of any other spots to put in, soaube next year in the spring before the water level drops.😞
@@buddymcclure6170 bummer it was too low. You might try launching down past Huntington next time on the Oregon side. There’s another launch at a nice park, they also charge a few bucks to launch there.
@@SilhouetteOutdoors Flatheads are really the best eating catfish. Try it sometime. And another thing, some fish aren't that good to eat when they get really big. Flatheads are somewhat of an exception to that. 20 pounders are usually good eatin size. At least in Texas they are 👍
@@danielgc1970 I’ve heard the belly meat is really good.. I have a tough time bonk’n one when I like catching them so much. Thanks for the info! Tight lines..
I assume the river is navigable between Baker Rail bridge and Farewell bend frpm your video. I was told there was an obstructionjust a ways from Baker Rail bridge, so we never ventured passed the bridge
I should add, that we will keep the bait alive as long as possible to keep it as fresh as possible. We do kill them before putting it on the hook, typically used as cut-bait.
@@SilhouetteOutdoors very cool place. I've only been once, a few months ago, and got skunked, but enjoyed the scenery. I'd like to go again and target cat, soon but gotta wait till I heal a little more, from some broken bones
How about swan falls, I went there when I was little but we always fished for sturgeon and bass, also looking for a good spot around homedale and marsing
Swan Falls is alright. there are quite a few cats down there, even a few flatheads. But it gets fished pretty hard and the numbers just aren't there. Marsing and Homedale are great cat spots, but the moss is horrible! Very hard to keep it off your bait, literally islands of it are drifting down the river. Brownlee is your best bet this time of year with the still water. Lake Lowell is another good one, but I don't recommend eating them.. Try Marsing and Homedale early spring before the moss is horrible and you'll do well.
Typically the deepest water you can find during the day. It’s cooler there during the summer. It varies greatly, depending what part of the river you’re fishing. Some holes aren’t more than 12 ft. deep, others can be 60. At night they can be in knee deep water feeding.
Typically I don't catch many catfish where i catch sturgeon, seems the cats clear out when the sturgeon move in. Swan Falls is about the only exception, we catch both there. The closer you get to Brownlee Reservoir, the more cats you'll find. And the moss isn't as bad there.
Great video! The question I have is you stated that you should fish "bottlenecks." In watching the video, it appears like you are just fishing the main channel.
I am fishing the deep water, aka the channel, but it is still a bottleneck, the river narrows at the point i’m fishing. And it’s off a point, so it’s the narrowest point in that section of river.
