I live in Tokyo and am a faithful Cathay Pacific user for traveling to Asia and Europe. Why? BECAUSE OF THE LOUNGES!!! They never cease to amaze me... They used to have THE BRIDGE that closed down during COVID which was done up in the style of THE WING (the mid-90s style) which was also great, but I agree THE PIER beats the other lounges hands down. Having said that, what makes Hong Kong such a pleasure to transfer at is the variety and choice of lounges, with each one giving you a totally different experience, but consistent where it counts (overall quality). Thank you so much for your great videos! You are the best aviation review channel out there as far as I'm concerned! Always eye opening and interesting! Thanks so much Patrick!
a cornucopia of elegant design abound @HKG and ya the lounge UX looked mighty shwanky; you got some wicked shots! and yes, dig the clear view to planes as well. Cathay's def top tier so not at all surprised with the luxury here - the surprise upgrade i had was way back in '08 and they've sustained quality and style (mark of an exceptional brand) and, yes, you are correct: one can never have too much dim sum
Thanks for flying from Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific. the 777-300ER 1-1-1 first class to Beijing is a steal! Before Cathay Dragon(KA) was merged into Cathay it would typically be operated with a A330 (mostly) and some A320s (up to 15-20 pairs of flights per day from KA and CS alone? - so almost 1/hr during daytime). The first class seat will often be a 1-2-1 on the 330 with essentially the reverse herringbone seat in the long haul business class. I haven't flown the Beijing route since Covid so this is interesting. Beijing is so close with an actual flight time of around 2hrs 50 minutes and is usually flown by businessmen, so usually it's treated almost like a shuttle service. In economy class, I personally prefer lunch/dinner because of the Ice Cream, but breakfast is not bad too. For the lounge, the best part of The Wing is the Heaven with the a la carte menu. For security at HK, I think there might possibly be an expedited track, but the line for HK security is never that long (usually
Thank you Patrick for sharing your flight here. Either selection of lounges that you shared looked very nice. Yes, First Class on many long-haul flights can be expensive but many travelers find airlines that they can use their membership points so much these days to get First Class. And yes, there are the other groups of travelers who have the funds in their travel checking accouts to fly First Class all the time.😊 Then there those travelers who use their AmEx Black cards and or Platinum cards. And therer Citi Sapphire travelers or the Barclay Card travelers out their!😊 Yes, traveling is what it is these days with people in general who went to flying the best way possible on whatever salary they have.
Cool review of CX. I’m looking to fly Cathay this September for my first ever trip to Asia, although I won’t have the baller status of first or business class and will have to settle with premium economy.
Excellent video Patrick. I used to fly CX long-haul in biz and first in and out of SFO in the early 2000s, many many times, along with SQ. CX is definitely my favorite airline out of all. They’re catering and service was perfect every time. I still can taste their delicious cheese plate and port and Cathay Delight. once I was the only passenger in first on the Airbus 345 and the crew asked if it would be OK if a couple of the pilots could grab a sleep in the cabin along with me. The lounge agents did many many favors once they saw my face on a regular basis. Minor comment, I thought the Pier lounge was open in the 2000s.
@@PatrickSheaAviation Great memories indeed, along with great prices. I was paying approximately $1500 roundtrip in paid biz CMB-SFO and could choose between all CX metal or SQ metal. For a couple of years or so, I was flying transpac at least 2 to 3 times per month. Sure miss it at times, which is why I appreciate how you do your videos.
We flew with CX a week ago from MNL to KIX with a layover in HKG! I love the in flight services and meals plus the transfer in HKG is seamless! We will definitely fly with CX again in the future.
Cathay has been getting a lot of flak lately from many reviwers. Thanks for a balanced review that lays out facts and only facts without a spin or agenda.
Another excellent, informative and entertaining report - I love the structure you use. Great to see Cathay not only surviving (which many doubted would be possible) but now having ambitious plans - let's hope they succeed. Ps I vote for the Pier! 😊
I prefer CX first lounges which are more intimate compared EK hub which is humongous but Swiss Lufthansa & Air France hubs looked fancy too. I was surprised Cathay did not offer you Dom Perignon & Krug as bubbles even for short haul
Yea I definitely prefer this lounge to emirates. Emirates just needs more space so it feels like a whole terminal basically. Would’ve still loved some dom though
Me and my wife will fly the CX First Class from HKG to LAX in May 2024! 😊 It cost us each 125K of CX-Miles plus $??? but one of us might change to Biz for 84K if available. I’ll update and share our final experience with you here! 😊
I wish Cathay Pacific, Boing 777-300ER's 1st class has window inside the lavatory, that will be fun and I wish all airlines have window inside the lavatory.
I’ve always thought the Pier the most tastefully done lounge of any major airline, and it’s great that Cathay adopted that aesthetic for all of their lounge renovations since.
Awesome video Patrick. My one world status has gotten me into both the pier and wing lounges a few times however I am yet to experience the Cathay First class. Have one booked in July! Looking forward to it. My fav lounge is the pier. I thought the food was better in Pier. Cathay delight is also my fav inflight beverage.
I look forward to each new video. It's become part of my routine as I eat breakfast on Sundays. 🙂 LOL on throwing some shade about finding the center line. 🤣
I love lounge hopping. If you're flying a star alliance business/ First class long haul you can lounge hop at LAX. 4 lounges to hop (5 if flying first class). I hope to fly Cathay one day in business or first.
I guess many people will miss this one: at 17:16 you can see a Condor plane parked at the gate but Condor don't fly to HKG, it's a one time charter flight from Frankfurt! Seeing this plane in HKG is a rare occurrence.
I Look Forward To Your Channel Every Week. You Also Seem To Be A Very Bright And Kind Young Man. Thanks So Much For Showing Me Parts Of The World And First Class Flying. I Guess A Old Man Like Me, Can Still Dream Eating Bacon And Caviar In The Sky. LOL!!
Furthermore, it has been some years since I have flown into over in Hong Kong International Airport. The new/old does looks very nice. It usecto be long long walks to our gates were our flights us to be placed at. I would always take my time walking with my former crews!😊 You said that you where offered a First Class cart to be taken to your gate. I hear you!😊 That is a nice travel amenity at airpors.😊
I've heard from other people and seen aviation review vlogs that Cathay Pacific's product has gone downhill quite a bit since the pandemic. I'm glad to see the product still looks outstanding and that you had a good experience.
Thanks for the video, Patrick. We do not have many Eastern Asian carriers operating into African Airports. Johannesburg does have CX and SQ, which do not fly to any other African airport.
Awesome video as usual! Maybe it's just me but I feel like the music is just a bit too loud making it difficult to hear you at several parts of the video
Love your videos Patrick! Keep up the fantastic work and please do some Canadian content at some point with Air Canada, Westjet, Flair and Air Transat, love to hear your view of how you like Canadian airlines. Also to do a long haul from YVR and explore it too. From your Canadian viewer.
Another excellent video. CX passengers in the afternoon or evening can access the Qantas’ lounge upstairs after immigration. It is famous for a trolley food service of yum cha and other street food. Well worth a visit as a prelude to the Pier.
See CX finally adopted the idea of serving champagne in a larger kind of white wine glass instead of a flute. Seems they have a mini upgrade to the upholstery and the TV. Wonder when the next major upgrade to a suite will be? These seats are really old, must be at least 15-20 years old.
Nice video. First time viewer. Best wishes on finding a longer flight. I used bank miles to CX for JFK HKG HND in 1st for 160,000 miles for this October. Also missed the resting rooms at pier with tarmac views. Separated from a toilet like LH FCT resting rooms Safe Landings
How did you like the service Patrick? By the wayMy most flown route on Cathay Pacific is Hong Kong to Manila, where I did it four times two economy 2001 December 2005 January 2006 business class. All CX planes do fly to MNL NAIA Terminal 3 just like the 5J RP-C39xx seen at 16:14. If you want a One World Alliance frequent flyer mileage you are better off getting Asia miles you can simply walk in turn American and Alaska Airlines lounges once you are the Max tier level diamond
Love your videos. But tried having it on while working too. Audibly. The EQ of the mic is not that good. Would you like help in getting it sounding better so it matches the video material ? Regards / Pro Mix Mastering Guy from Denmark.
It seems amazing to me that the new HKG airport has had to have refurbs - I still remember flying into Kai Tak and did so a few times - flying past peoples windows and seeing into their apartments was mad! I've not had the chance to fly Cathay Pacific - maybe one day. I do however love their name - it's romantic and conjures up exotic images of the Orient back before mass tourism etc.
I’ve been trying to fly on air peace for almost 8 months now and every time they have screwed me over and I’ve had to change airlines. Maybe one day… but it’s just not meant to be
18:43, Wow nice. Better than Air New Zealand, Boeing 777-300ER's economy class, Jetblue and Qantas domestic flight, they have free wifi for the whole flight.
It looks like the airport is Beijing Capital (PEK). There's another newer international airport in Beijing called Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX). They have gradually moved most of non CA and its partners to PKX. I was surprised that CX was still allowed to fly into PEK.
Hey just a note Cathay has announced all current 777-300ER with F will have their F class removed during refurbishment. Effectively CX won't have F soon until the new 777X planes.
Your short haul first class ticket is much cheaper than long haul business class ticket, however, the long haul business class cannot go in the Cathay First class lounge. Your HK to pek flight costs 4 times less than khg to ord flight, Cathay should do a Better evaluation for the lounge access requirement.
