This installment of Cathedral Ambience was performed by me in real time on my channel during a recorded livestream on February 2, 2024, using a sampled version of the organ in Pauluskirche in Ulm, Germany (using the amazing Hauptwerk software). The livestream had a few tech glitches that didn't provide for a perfect audio experience, so this is the "clean" version using the external recording I made during that program. To my knowledge, this was the first time "ambient organ music" has ever been intentionally played live with an active audience, and it was done right here on RU-vid, so you are hearing a premiere performance of this 100% improvised music.
Ambient music is a genre intended to help you relax and bring about a sense of calm. This version is my own twist on it, entitled "Cathedral Ambience," and I set out to create a sonic atmosphere that mimics the experience of you sitting in a massive cathedral, hearing the soft sounds of a quiet pipe organ floating through the ether of a sanctuary. As pipe organs are most often thought of as loud and menacing, my hope is that music like this puts the instrument in a unique light -- as one capable of delicate and gentle sounds, helping you to focus, study, meditate, or even drift off to sleep (please do take naps to this video, I highly encourage it!).
📷 Photos are my own, taken at Wells Cathedral in January 2024.

I have recently discovered your channel, and I'm so glad I did. These series of videos remind of the days when I was young, and I'd walk into church as the prelude would start, and there was silence as the congregation prepared for worship. It's not like that, anymore, so finding these videos takes me back to those days of my childhood and youth. When I was an organ student and would sub for my teacher at our church, I'd prepare preludes that evoked the same feelings that these videos do: contemplation; inner peace; reverence. Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, that's the idea behind me improvising this, to give the experience of what it sounds like to walk into a large cathedral, sit down and listen to the organist calmly playing meditative music. There's something about it that feels naturally contemplative and relaxing.

@@aaronshows one of my favorite CD's is the 2-disc set "In a Quiet Cathedral" by Todd Wilson. While not improvised, it is the meditative type of prelude music one would hear walking into such a place of worship.

Thanks again for such awesome recordings of the organ!! There are no other recordings of the pipe organ this crisp!!!! Can you possibly try playing it in 432Hz instead of 440Hz? I may be mistaken in what tuning your organ is in because it sounds beautiful as it is but I prefer 432Hz in any case!

43:30 I thought I was going crazy but there's a ticking sound in the background. Don't think it's a metronome. It's not rhythmic. Maybe finger jewelry? Idk.

Good catch! I was performing this in real time so I didn't notice, but my best guess is, there must be a pipe that naturally makes a slight "tick" sound as air moves through it. My left hand is very active in this section, so it could simply by one of the pipes in that "busy" movement in the left hand. I don't own any finger jewelry...so that answers that!

Sentire l'organo a suonare è sempre una grande e immensa gioia. Porta la felicità al cuore, e allo spirito. Grazie per questa musica. Molto cara e amata all'umanità. Ringrazio di vero cuore l'autore del bellissimo video. Onore benevolenza gratitudine.
