I used to wind my youngest son up with this. We had a pound shop on East Ham High St, and I'd look in the window and go; "How much is that?" only to get: "It's a pound shop, dad. How much d'you reckon?" After a few times asking the self-same question over other pieces of toot and saying: "Oh, right. of course" I'd test his patience to the limit. The novelty of amusement soon wore off on the poor sod. I'm a bad, bad man!

Christ I’d forgotten about Dave Allen, you could say he was that earliest known example of being cancelled by PC culture because his comedy dialogues were a stream of consciousness and he would wander into adult stuff and swear sometimes, and he just couldn’t do his act and adhere to PC rules, so he got the sack. Shame because he was brilliant, what a mind, I could’ve listened to him talk for hours on end.

I used to work retail for about 15 years. You get people like that in all age groups, those just spoiling for conflict. lol I used to love defusing them before they got started. It was either change your attitude and let me help or I have the right to refuse to serve you. Most of the time they would end up apologising. Of course there were the exceptions and they left how they came in miserable and the issue unresolved. lol

Eight and a half bloody years, Josh. Eight and a half bloody years. I do not miss some of those people coming in and telling me their life story, although some people were real characters. It's those you miss sometimes, although certainly not all of them. We had this one customer in his 50s who'd been coming in for years, a security guard, who used to wear a toupee. It was so obvious, and there were times he'd come in with it skew-whiff, or even back to front. That was a funny day, lol. One day he came in when I was on my own, and he didn't have it on. As you do, you don't comment, just greet, and he starts talking to me. He brings up the topic that, "You probably notice that I've gone bald." Diplomacy came into play here, so I acted surprised and said that I hadn't noticed. Lol. He then proceeded to explain how it'd happened. "I had to go into hospital for an operation on my brain, and they needed to shave my head, but the hair hasn't grown back." Needless to say, although I was very shocked and sympathetic at the time, tears flowed once he was out of the shop, and I don't mean tears of grief. 🤣 Then there was the old guy who never washed, and smelt exactly like you'd expect him to. He only came in during the summer (yeah), and used to mumble everything he said so you could barely understand him, then he'd stand really close to you. The fan behind the counter was immediately turned on whenever he came in, I can tell you. I still can't forgive the owner for foisting him onto me that one time. 🤢
@AfterWorkReactions
@AfterWorkReactions 4 года назад
LOL you certanly do get some characters while working with the public. There used to be an older woman who would come into my old job who would buy a ton of food then return it all, every single time. I would have to toss it due to store rules. I started telling her you can't keep buying food then returning it. So annoying =/

Like many here, swap the Effing & Jeffing for "bloomin'" this could be my East End London Nanna. "Go down the Frog for me gaspers. Put yer weasel on though, it's a bit uncle out there." Loved her Rum & Pep, a family bun-fight and a knees-up, won a bit of money in Whist Drives, lost it on the Dogs. Always having a feud with some neighbour, so wouldn't go down the Public Shelters during bombing raids even though her house was damaged. Bit of a slapper, divorced in 1930 which was unusual then, due to a proliferation of 'Uncles' whilst her engine driving husband was away according t my mother. My father when discussing family history said: 'Their maybe some Yank in you son...there was a lot in your Grandmother!"

I went into a pound shop one day to buy a can of coke, just one can, they were selling them 3 for a pound but they were individually priced at 36p each. I lifted one and took it to the counter and she wanted to charge £1 for it, i stood and argued with the daftie girl assistant over it, i pointed to the price that was clearly marked on the can (36p) but she just kept repeating £1. I argued that the offer stated 3 can for a pound but again she just kept saying £1 and nothing else. Everyone in the queue behind me was on my side and agreed with me 100% but she just kept saying £1 lol. At that time you didn't even pay £1 for a can of coke in a nightclub. I gave up and walked out the shop and never went back to that pound shop again.
