Catholic OCD: Mental Gibberish and Our Image of God

Managing Scrupulosity

Every person who has ever lived has experienced intrusive thoughts. Every person has experienced some kind of thoughts that may frighten them, embarrass them, or make them wonder what might be going on. Most people, let these kinds of unwanted thoughts go, and never think of them again. Not so those who suffer from scrupulosity/Catholic OCD. They become part of the accumulated and toxic dump of such thoughts that are "mined" for every possible meaning. Unfortunately, they are also interpreted as somehow offensive against God, and therefore sinful. Our thoughts tell us more about how we think about God rather than how God might think about us.

ThanK you so so much!! You have helped my young daughter (13) immensely. She has had very troubling thoughts about God and especially hell and sins (blasphemy), so many horrible thoughts.. gibberish as you explained so well. I'm just so very grateful to find a catholic priest concerned with these mental problems (OCD/ Scrupulosity): Many people (on Tiktok and so forth) instill so much fear. So, I can't say thank you enough! ☺

OCD is a disorder that can be managed as far as demonic obsession, I would counsel moving very slow with this kind of diagnosis, especially if it is self-diagnosed.

Fr. Santa. THANK YOU for doing these teachings on RU-vid! Having access to you like this is so helpful and gives us hope as you address our fears. We are more able to trust your words because you are a priest! I have suffered with this for MANY years - and am just beginning to be delivered from it - through priests. Thank you for being a priest. Priests are the most valuable people on earth as no one else can do what you do -- give us absolution and confect the Eucharist! May God bless you exceedingly for helping us.

Thank you very much, Fr. Santa, for your dedicated ministry to those of us with scrupulosity. My life has been made better because of your scrupulous anonymous publications. I do have a request: I would like to ask if you could mute the background music because I think it interfered with digesting what you were saying. The background music makes it hard to process what you have said. It is just my opinion but please do consider removing the background music. If I could present myself to be credible in my assessment, I have a degree in medicine. The music interferes with thought processes as the hearing of music and the hearing of your words occur simultaneously, competing with each other. Thank you.

@@catholicocd father I have scrupulosity but what worrys me why would I have bad thoughts in church, impure I feel like I'm evil because why at mass this happens 😢or during prayer as well 🙏
@catholicocd

You do not control your thoughts at all. Your scrupulosity generates anxiety about such thoughts and generates even more anxiety if the thought takes place in church where it makes you feel even worse. There is no sin. No responsibility. Be at peace.@@reynam5427

Medication, properly prescribed, is one of the greatest blessings we have received over the last 30 years. It can provide significant help and relief. I would urge you to seek out the medical person who can help you and who can find the correct balance.
