Using the tools and techniques of the hardy pioneers, we begin to bring the logs out of the bush and peel bark in preparation for the construction of a settlers log cabin. In this episode we briefly discuss the tump line, adz, broad ax, chisels and augers - and how they are used.

I'm a Thai person. from Thailand. I like to study history. I'm very happy when I found your RU-vid channel. In Thailand there is rarely a show or simulation or lifestyle of the people of the old days. I like the stories of people living in the past. I am very lucky to have found your youtube channel. It filled me with happiness.Thank you. You have created videos and stories made through videos on your RU-vid channel. make me full of happiness

I taught history for 32 years in a public high school. The focus of most curriculum is political/economic. “Lifestyle” always interested me and I would sneak in as much of this daily lifestyle into my lessons. The life of those who came before is essential to understand where their attitudes and belief system came from. It took years before a farm was operational and so taxation was a very important issue. Making a farm profitable took a long time and it was difficult to generate cash needed to pay your taxes. So...it is understandable that the American Revolution is in part due to a conflict over taxation.

Thank you so much for creating this series. There are not enough good quality series like this around these days. As a person whose personal heroes are Dick Proenneke and Roy Underhill, haha, to find a series such as this, that seems to be pretty time period correct and focused, this is a breathe of fresh air. Thank you for your work and can't wait to continue with the series.

Fun stuff , I built a log house in my 20s , 20x24 with an A fram loft . I lost it in a devorace . It was used some by others over the years , no i think its just a barn . That was 40 years ago . I made mistakes on it . One was not haveing a large enough over hang . I wish I could of kept it , I would of fixed my priblems in time . Oh well . Today I live in my modern frame 20x24 cabin . Built right , Offgrid , log houses are ok If built correctly and treated proplerly , Being in the southern US , not a good climate for log homes , moisture from humidity , bugs , I love my modern cabin .

That fire danger from creosote is still present in masonry flues, especially in wood burning fireplace furnaces, which I have. Late one winter night I chanced to look out at a scene as bright as a sunny noon at about 10:30. The fireplace was making a bump bump and on checking outside I found a giant acetylene torch busy drying out every cloud that chanced overhead and it was issuing out of my chimney. When I saw it take out a passing airplane and two helicopters I decided something had to be done. I quickly opened the doors of the firebox and doused the fire with water and reclosed the doors to prevent any draft but but chimney was still chugging like a passing tornado. I rushed into the kitchen and grabbed a box of baking soda, reopened the doors, ripped open the box and sent the contents up the chimney and reclosed the door. I ran outside to see the results. From welding hot red the colors changed to a yellower hue, to a blue and then to a green which was followed by a sissified pop and the monster was silenced. Chimney sweep said no damage but he had never seen a cleaner chimney. But we opted for a metal pipe liner and no troubles since. No trouble with the airforce or meteorologists as the evidence had been completely wiped out.

That is a great story p, Larry,or should I say, a story with a great ending. thanks for sharing.
@larryreese6146
@larryreese6146 2 года назад
@@TheWoodlandEscape the problem with those old flues was a real danger but not nearly so much as with modern fireboxes fireboxes. The problem is that the new ones can be shut off and the fire allowed to simmer. Where the old fireplaces had a constant draw which carried a greater amount of creosote and suet out the top the new ones alow it to build up. But I can imagine the fear of fire from folks who lived in wooden houses with dry wooden shakes for a roof. I can laugh now but , at the time, it was no laughing matter.

This is how N. America was built, it wasn't easy living; things were tough and times were always hard. Nothing was a given. Today, this character of people have vanished and the criminal elements with hands out is all that's left. The USA went from being blessed to being cursed all because of lack of vision and loss of focus on The One Who put the possibilities at their forefront.

What a lot of fun your video is. Only 1/3 of the way through (so far) and I'm compelled to affirm it. As an aside, that's nice fresh bark you're peeling. Sawyer's pits are the origin of the term underdog. The guy up on top was the "top dog" the guy in the pit was the "underdog". A really bad spot to be, no air circulation, saw dust getting in your eyes, down your shirt, sticking in the sweat and rubbing you raw. Fun times!

People have no idea the time a woodsman spends sharpening their axes ,tools 1:51 and knives, do they? That draw knives did not sharpen itself, did it? I have some of the best axes and tools that money will buy and I know how much time that I spend working on the. Not to mention my power tools which take an inordinate amount of time to keep them in good working order. I have always figured it takes an hour of work for each hour that I use one of my Stihl saws and they are a lot easier to maintain than a crosscut saw.
