“No excuses!” I noticed that the space between my washer and dryer and the end of my one-car garage would be long enough to house an enlarged and four 8x10 trays, so my buddy and I built a darkroom there. It’s as wide as my dryer is deep and has room for two guys, if necessary. A friend really wanted a darkroom in his rented in-law place so I told him about the journalists who had suitcase enlargers (the closed case served as the enlarger base!) so he got one and nod has a darkroom in his tiny bathroom! No excuses!

Hi! Nico's Photography Show recommended your channel recently, so I came over to check it out and subbed right away. I've been shooting as a hobby since the mid-1970s, professionally since about 2009. Now I'm getting back to my hobby shooting with film and I'm building my RU-vid channel based on my collection of Kodak cameras (still putting my set together where I'm going to record my videos). I'm excited to go back through your catalog of videos and am eagerly awaiting your next videos. Thanks for sharing your work!

FYI - There is a product from Kodak called Photo Flo that you SHOULD use after the final wash. Before removing the film from your reel, but after the film has been thoroughly washed, pour Photo Flo into the tank, and swish around for a few seconds. THEN hang. Photo Flo insures that the film will dry perfectly clean with NO water marks, and no need to squeegee!

Great video! I love your resourcefulness and determination. I processed film ( including large format) in the kitchen sink of my Seattle apartment for 7 years. A few things- try to avoid getting water (even a drop) in your 510-Pyro concentrate, by putting a wet syringe in the bottle, for instance. Also, your used developer and water stop are perfectly safe to put down your drain. You don’t need to neutral with vinegar or dilute it. On your print, when you dodge/ hold back an area, you do not get max black and it can look weak/muddy. If you’re using VC paper you can expose that area at a higher contrast using split grade printing techniques. 510-Pyro tip: for semi-stand development ( 1 minute initial agitation then 10 seconds agitation at halfway point) you can use 510-Pyro 1:100 for double the time recommended for the film in n D-76 stock. It’s worked for every film I’ve tried. 👍
@Eclectachrome

thanks! It depends on what system you have, septic is not okay to put anything down, and 'safe' is a relative term, I try to stay on the least concentrated side of things as possible. I'd love to try semistand dev though so thanks for the tip there :)

A medium yellow filter on the camera will partially darken the bald sky and maybe find a few cloud edges for you. With polycontrast/multicontrast printing paper you can use a #2 filter for the initial exposure then dodge (cover) the crowd while you burn in the bald sky portion with a #5 filter which will improve the look. Nice job with cropping and printing the motorcycle. Enjoy the journey.

The motorcycle image (just from seeing the print) is great -- you wrangled great midtones with reflections from that Fomapan 200 -- but to translate that to photo paper (not print it on your digital printer!!!) is the icing on the cake. I have not done developing/printing since high school (1980/81) and I remember it being really challenging to retain highlights (like the reflections), body (the midtones) and sharpness in the final print, from a great negative. So much goes into it -- contrast filters, the photo paper -- you really did an amazing job getting that image to come out like it did in the print (are you selling copies? seriously!). The CatLABS X320 images are great in their own right -- the pop and contrast emphasize the energy of a day at a fair, where the Fomapan 200 captured that mellowness of the grey tones.

I no longer have my own darkroom or the equipment some of which was very old back then anyway! I used to use the Ilford Multigrade paper which was excellent for home printing because with a set of filters you had access to more grades of paper than just having an average grade. Not sure which kind of disposable gloves you are using, but they might not be really chemistry restistant. In such case, small portions of chemistry might diffuse through and concentrate between skin and gloves, which might not be optimal in case you are using very "aggressive" chemistry (I do not know 510 Pyro). For security, I recommend better using nitrile gloves. They are a bit more expensive than your blue gloves but are chemistry safe. Nonetheless, I enjoyed your video! 🤩

I've heard both ways, pre wash or not to pre wash - do you find it better for the process?

@@Eclectachrome I always pre-wash. Makes sure the tank is also at right temp - and I believe dev works quicker and more evenly on a wet film. AND it gets rid of that antihalation coating prior to dev. I've been processing films of all formats for over 60 years - it works for me. Hwyl.
