Odessa Starokonny bird market. The date of his birth is considered to be 1832. The city at that time was experiencing an economic take-off: a huge amount of various goods came to Odessa by sea. During this period, a lot of retail space appears, and the city administration decides to improve these "shopping complexes". Cross-cutting stone galleries are being built, buildings and sheds are being built, water supply and sewerage are being carried out. Markets are becoming civilized.
Probably, since those times in Odessa there has been a tradition of “making a bazaar”. True, now the venerable fathers of families during the "purchasing rituals" mainly play the role of cabmen and carriers. And then, in old Odessa, the owner went to the market - especially to the Horse - himself. It was hardly light, when the gypsies drove horses hot as the south wind from the side of the steppe, buyers flocked to the market. They walked along the rows, creaking their boots, asking the price, bargaining. They stood near the horses for a long time, delightedly clicked their tongues in the rows where exotic birds and fish were sold ... It was the trade in animals that the Horse Market was famous for.
Then, already in the 50s of the 19th century, the then city administration decided to streamline the market trade, and for this purpose, by order of order, the trade in horses and cattle was transferred to Vygonnaya land, and butcher shops were set up at the Horse Market and "generally trading in food supplies." The homeowners from Odessa, who lived in that area, fought for a long time with the city administration: they asked to leave the cattle market on their square, and also to transfer the crowded market here from the Old Bazaar. The administration resisted this even longer: the city developed, the main line of bazaars ran along Aleksandrovsky Prospekt. Naturally, in the center of the city there was a more lively trade than in Moldavanka, which was just turning from a small farm to the outskirts of the city. And by 1855, the market, which began to be called Starokonny, was built up with shops that were intended for the sale of greens, fruits, bread, and other products.
Time passed… Cabbies on the streets were replaced by dusty cars and ringing trams. The bazaars where they used to "trade horses" were empty. And the remaining sellers went with their "live goods", of course, to Starokonka. Over time, a crowded market pulled itself up there. And for many years Odessans came to Starokonka to buy a lamp for a TV or an aquarium fish, an antique copper latch for a door or a wonderful puppy. And now the market is not overcrowded, especially on weekends. People come not only to buy, for example, a drill or a drill. But also in order to look after the old silver candlesticks from the "hoarders", to stroke the kitten you like, to get advice from the aquarists. After all, Starokonka has always been and remains the most “living” market of our city.
In 1970, a detailed planning project for the Moldavanka-2 district was approved. It was supposed to demolish entire streets, and to build skyscrapers in place of one- and two-story houses. In accordance with this plan, the Starokonny Market was to decrease in volume and turn into a covered market, faceless, like all structures of this kind. And it is good that decisions in the country were made for a long time. After all, even longer these decisions were implemented. Fortunately for people who understand that there is no Odessa without Moldavanka, and Moldavanka without Starokonny Market.
