The largest intake of Gurkhas ever trained at Catterick has passed out in a ceremony in North Yorkshire. Days later, the record group of 399 were then assigned their new regiments. All but one of the original 400 recruits passed out, with one remaining rifleman having to wait a couple more months to recover from a broken leg.

And yet when my son passed out in the Rifles only 40% stayed the distance…I fear the next generation. They couldn’t handle discipline, were disrespectful to authority and had little stamina. Mind you when a Sjt tells you there is no such thing as mental health a few days after someone tries to hang themselves in the next room to your son then you start to think the Army is not a responsible employer and better to choose RN or RAF.

@Maxi Delevingne french foreign legion isn't elite, contrary to popular idiot belief. more gurkha intake just goes to show how much brits hate the idea of national pride, strength, culture and heritage today, in favour of low class socialist ideals and multiculturism. today's young men deserve no better than a nation that hates them and calls them 'toxic'.

I remember my brother telling a story of when he was at Sandhurst and the Gurkhas were the demonstration regiment there. They had to enact an attack in which some of them were 'killed'. Normally it just means the 'dead' man lies on the ground of course, but not the Gurkhas. When one was 'shot', it was the cue for the absolute worst in B or C movie acting, staggering about, clutching the 'wounds', sinking slowly to the ground groaning loudly, earning applause from the watching cadets.

Maxi Delevingne no not a Corby voter. If you no anything about the Gurkhas then you’ll no that there selection process to make it to week 1 day 1 of basic training is way harder than anyone else has to go through to get to that point and you’d be lucky if 10% of all recruits starting the entrance process could pass what the Gurkhas have to do. The reason I said that they are the proudest is due to the fact that for those that don’t pass the entrance process it is seen by some with in their villages as bringing shame on the village and family and it is not uncommon for so to leave their village and never return or to commit suicide as the shame can be to much. Very very few of today’s youth if any would think that not making it into the British Army brought shame on them and rtheir family. I joined the Army in 1995 and left in 2011 and I know for a fact that no one on my intake would have passed what the Gurkhas had to do to get to that point. You’re right in saying that those in the SAS , SBS, SRR PARA REGT AND RM COMMANDOS are incredibly fit guys and girls for those who passed selection for the SRR, but that’s taken many years of training for most of them. The Gurkhas on the other hand are naturally fit when they arrive at phase one due to the environment and altitude that they have grown up in.

Be nice if members of the Gurkha regiment could tour British schools and instill the ethos pf discipline, loyalty, endeavour and respect - more young men like this would only improve our society as a whole. Never heard a Gurkha say he was 'entitled'. TOTAL RESPECT

I remembered when the gurhas served in Hong-Kong, they were very discipline and the locals liked them. A very respected fighting force for any country to have.

I was privileged to be attached to 7th Gurkha Rifles in the 80s, a time I will never forget. True warriors.

I saw the Gurkhas a few years ago at the Christchurch airport in New Zealand. I have no idea why they were there but it was awesome to see them in the flesh.
