Meh I don’t think so……just not ENOUGH of what makes Catwoman….not slinky enough ….she didn’t move like a cat that well. And much too old imo. The only thing was maybe her purr or growl or whatever. I think Michelle Pfeiffer was the best by far in an all around kind of way.

@r.h.1988
@r.h.1988 2 месяца назад
@nunugirlswag109 Because the context of their career and their respective films were different. Twilight was an unserious teen romance and Pattinson was still a small actor. Halle was an established actor who had worn big awards and the history of batman movies especially was kinda hit or miss. The backlash she received was still unwarranted, but those two situations are not really comparable. A better comparison is her and George Clooney.

Did you read about why Matthew Vaughn quit X3? "He continued, “So I grabbed it, and opened the first page, and it said, ‘Africa. Kids dying from no water, and Storm creates a thunderstorm to save all these children.’ I thought it was a pretty cool idea. I said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is the Halle Berry script because she hasn’t signed on yet. This is what she wants it to be. And once she signs on, we’ll throw it in the bin.’ I thought, if you’re going to do that to an Oscar-winning actress who plays Storm, I quit. I thought I’m mincemeat.”" Storm has one of the greatest love stories in X-Men called "Lifedeath" and they've never told that story in an X-Men film. X-Men '97 is doing this story in the new series. Halle was wasted in the X-Men series.

@@sierotkamarysia4199 Honestly, my opinion of the Golden Raspberries was changed when I watched a review of Mommy Dearest a few years back, which won due to Faye Dunaway's over-the-top performance...of the extremely over-the-top actor. The scene where she beats her child with a hanger is still considered a "hilarious" joke because of people like them.

I just want to say, Halle Berry existing was definitely one of those moments for me as a teen where I realized "Oh I um. I'm also into girls." My goodness, she was and is so gorgeous (especially with the short hair). This movie is bad in that wonderful way where I still go back and watch it every once in a while with a friend so we can enjoy the nonstop goofy camp (and cute cats, terrible CGI one aside). And I will definitely check out Aishyo!

I'll never forget seeing Halle Berry on David Letterman promoting this movie the day before it premiered. He closed their interview with something like "I hope it's a big success for you" and she kinda visibly cringed and gave a very tentative "I hope so". 21:44 This may sound silly but I think another reason why the sexualization of Catwoman is icky is because... her costume sucks. that outfit is HIDEOUS, it is literally pants and a bra with zero design, it shows its only purpose is to show Halle Berry's body. I am a cosplayer who loves sexy outfits, and I would never want to wear that because other than showing skin it is supremely uninteresting and looks uncomfortable.

I don't want to give the writers credit when it's not due, but the ramping up of the sexiness to the exclusion of everything else really feels like a 'studio note'. One or more producers looked at the script and said "More sexy" because they can't fathom a woman being anything but sexy and keeping people's attention. Very much in the same way Tauriel, from the Hobbit, was re-written and re-shot to include a love triangle because if a woman isn't sexy and isn't being sought by several men, then why have a woman at all? It's really disappointing since we already have characters, CHARACTERS like Eowyn who are women, but still get to have an actual arc.

Okay, this is going to a bit much, so sorry. First of all, I really didn't know about the Selena Kyle thing. This baffles me because Warner Bros. holds on to those IPs like a child refusing to give up a security blanket. So this was weird. Secondly, Halle Berry was PERFECT for Catwoman - and I mean Selena Kyle Catwoman, not whatever that 2004 movie was supposed to be. I admit, it was the Jinx role that made that opinion stronger. Even when she showed up on John WInk I was like "That's what Catwoman should have been" - I mean without the body count. (It was John Wick, after all.) Oh and I HATED Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman. But don't go by me, I hated the 1991 Batman. I still feel Keaton was horribly mis-cast, and none of the other movies of that time were really that much better. And the reason I hated Michelle Pfeiffer was the same reason I hated what they turned the 2004 Catwoman into. Okay, now comes the comic blerd part of things. In both movies they had to make Catwoman super. I have no clue why. The Joker wasn't super. Penguin wasn't super. Bane was just as annoying as his comic counterpart, but he wasn't super. But both movies had the "she dies then a bunch of cats revive her giving her cat powers." And yes, this is one of those annoying times a comic geek screams "Just use the comics, the comics are right there and available! Why are you doing this nonsense?" (Quick note, Marvel leaned so heavily on comic stories there were times they literally put the panels on the screen.) Admittedly, at first (and for years) Catwoman was more of a villain of the week thing in the comics. The only thing that made her an exception was she was Batman's Lois Lane, only it was more complex because she is a thief. Frank Miller's version. . .let's not talk about Frank Miller's version. Then suddenly in the late 1980s, the writers took a turn. Catwoman got her own series - not a giant size special or a story in a Bat Family comic. At first it was a little over the top. There's an actual issue where Catwoman fight Robo-Catwoman. It was a bit of a mess. Then the comic writers stopped doing drugs before writing an issue and suddenly they settled on her character. Catwoman is a theif with pretty much the same fighting skills as Batman, without the parent dying and the "I am the night, I am vengeance" thing. (Blame that on the animated series.) In the comics she was the Master Thief. And stealing was her trade, and even when she became a "hero" she refused to give it up. Catwoman was the thief every other thief either envied or wanted to top. The cat thing was her gimmick, and she did love cats. She's the only human being who took Scarecrow's fear toxin and not only survived it but built up an immunity. She's one of the few who stood up to the Joker, and the Joker was in his psycho killer phase at this time, so very few villains would even dare it. She became an anti-hero because her area of Gotham was one Batman never seemed to get to. She is a complete and total badass as a well as a complex and often feared character. And she escaped Batman mostly because she. . .um. ..turned him on. When they announced Halle Berry was going to play the character I was excited. It was perfect casting. It was absolutely type casting. But I was hoping for the master thief who used acrobatics and her mastery with a whip to escape the police or street level heroes. She could fight Batman to a stand still, because her Kung-Fu was just as good as his. (There was a running story line in DC Comics in the 1990s about a character named Lady Shiva who wanted to become the #1 fighter in the world but had to beat a list of of other master fighters in order to get there. Catwoman was on that list, and Lady Shiva barely beat Selena in their fight.) I know it's annoying when us comic geeks cry about them not following the comics, but in the case of Catwoman if they had followed the character as written in the comics in 2004, it would have been a much better movie. I was hoping for that and didn't get it and was very disappointed that they had the perfect actress for the roles and did. . .well that with it. And I'm so glad they stopped with the "woman dies and cats revived her" BS. But the costume, YIKES. I a red blooded cis male, and I had the Halle Berry posters and computer wallpaper. But that costume was hideous. However, that was back in the days when most moves were afraid to use the comic costumes despite the overwhelming success of Spider-Man. I have some hopes of Zoey Kravitz, but while she's not bad, she's no Halle Berry.

But if you don't assert to people that you _actually_ have good taste and sensibility and like something like this _despite_ that they will think less of you or something? Why do you even have to feel guilt for your guilty pleasures. I remember she has a line that's something like "White Russian, hold the vodka, hold the Kahlua" , and just that line brought me lasting joy for the rest of the week, it's so gloriously camp. You can't be mad at that, because it's so obviously not a movie that is trying to take itself too seriously.

I never notice the paralel between Catwoman and Snow White. But I also noticed throughout the movie, Patience is always wearing long clothes to cover her body and she hides herself on curly hair but ever since she gets reborn, her outfit is more revealing and her hair is shorter and she's way confident. Also, whenever she's in her Catwoman mode, you noticed she barely smiling, she mostly just smirks even when fighting except when she's face to face with Tom, that's the only time when we see her smiling and even laughing because she just wanna toying with him just like a cat playing with their food. Also, she change her cadence of her voice to sound deeper and sexual so that's why Tom can't recognize her on their "fight" even though they have same height and skin color.

I was a teen when it came out, and I thought the movie was cheesy yet watchable, but I feel SO much nostalgia for the Catwoman PS2 game. The game mechanics were a bit mad, but I liked the aesthetic and it had cats and a superhero woman as the main character. She was fully playable and not just an option or an assist for a main guy character. She was THE character. Aside from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer PS2 and Xbox games, that was nearly impossible to find. And she had a huge ass WHIP! 😊

Catwoman is a guilt pleasure of mine. It’s one of my favorite, so bad it’s funny, movies.

just watched the interview in which she's asked about the "kiss" and omg,,, people are so stupid. someone in the comments was saying she doesn't sound uncomfortable, as if she isn't saying "what. the. fuck" over and over again for an entire minute. she was very brave during that era, she put up with so much sexualization and racism and she just.... took it. in silence... it's just sad, i wish she had been given the space to tell people to fuck *ff, and basic respect.

coming back to respond to my own comment because imagine catwoman with the morality of leverage. patience wouldn't need to return the jewelry because theft as a concept isn't inherently evil.

I've always had a soft spot for Catwoman probably because I watched it at such a young age that I didn't have the cynicism to see any movie as bad. Then again I also like Batman Forever so maybe I just like 'bad' superhero movies

Catwoman is SUCH an interesting movie because it’s loosely based on a loosely based version of the Catwoman character. Like, Tim Burton basically made a new character with the same name as the OG Selina Kyle and then Halle Berry took THAT new character and made a new character from it.

I fully agree with this video especially at the end where we recognize it’s still great. It’s not the best, it deserved to be so much better. But this movie made me feel so powerful growing up, I LOVED seeing this woman be a badass without needing the love interest, without needing Batman. I related to her being so meek and “invisible”, so I loved watching her come into her power, into herself. I loved the criticism of how women are treated in patriarchy and capitalism. It wasn’t what I wish it was but it still filled a hole in me for a super woman. And as a little rural yt girl I needed to see a WOC be a badass.

Really great review! Love the way you bring up and go into detail about multiple problems with the film that I couldn't even put into words. I'm left with a ton of ideas about the movie and a newfound appreciation for what it could have been, in more competent hands... I hope we get a reboot someday with all the hindsight that's come along since then. There's lots of changes I hope they'd make, but to name a few: 1. Give Catwoman an "I am Catwoman. Hear me roar...!" moment. I'd personally replace that silly "Game over." and "Guess what? It's Overtime...!" with "You're *nothing.*" and "You're wrong... I'm *Catwoman.*" That'd have hit 10x harder. If the name of the track that goes along with her rebound is "Hear me roar!" that'd be even better. 2. Remove the Detective Lone storyline. That way the time he'd take up can be spent giving Patience a small, fleshed-out group of friends instead. Detective Lone can be a brief relationship she has as her sexuality intensifies. Then, by the end when she's finally blended both sides of herself into one balanced being, she breaks things off as she realizes that she's just fine on her own, for now. She can and will do bad all by herself. 3. Give Catwoman a progression arc! She becomes stronger physically, emotionally, and sexually as the film goes on. A minor thing, but it'd add a LOT. 4. Make Catwoman superhuman ALL the time and more durable too. Twice as durable as the original Laurel. Twice as fearless as usual as a result. Your point about her costume being so revealing because she's fearless in the face of potential death after experiencing it? Loved that. Also make her Spider-Man/Spider-Gwen strong and make it so that she, like them, can't turn the juice off, meaning she has to learn to regulate her strength too. The sense of restriction that comes with having to hold back constantly and operate at a fraction of her power would add incentive for her to let her Catwoman personality emerge so she can be free of the burdens and expectations placed upon herself as Patience. It'd also make her fight with Laurel the first time she can go all out, bringing about a sort of rush and power trip. Speaking of Laurel... 5. Improve Laurel Hedare's story DRASTICALLY. People more creative than me have suggested that she be a Lady Clayface of some sort. Totally agree. Make it so Beau-line's prototypes both fucked her up completely and also rebirthed her into a shape-altering imitation and improvement of her past self. She's no longer human, but slime held together in the shape of one. And... She's gorgeous. Her skill at keeping herself composed lends well to her ability to perfectly mimic her previously fully human form with a large boost in physical beauty. Simply put? She's the picture of perfection...and the Beau-line plot is far more insidious to make sure that she stays that way. Her plan would be to poison the city's, then beyond's water supply with the same toxic chemicals that damaged and rebuilt her, only using enough of a concentration to cause appearances of people the country over to degrade subtly. For most men, this would be no big deal. For women? It's intended to be devastating, to the point that they'll line up in droves to buy Beau-line and the similar products of her puppet companies to become beautiful again. Not only will Laurel becoming financially powerful on top of her physical power, but... She'll be The Fairest Of Them All... 6. Fix the ending fight! It could've been a whole action and dialogue packed conflict between two different ideas of power and the wrong way to acquire it. It could've been multiple layers deep. It's not just Catwoman fighting to avenge her death and get her vengeance. It's Patience fighting to save the world and especially its women from the plot Laurel has cooked up. It's Patience fighting to save her FRIENDS especially from the world Laurel envisions. It's Catwoman furiously trying to instill within Laurel that same sense of helplessness Laurel created in her after ordering Patience's death. It's Patience furiously trying to instill within Laurel that same sense of helplessness she intends to create within other women with her poisonous plan. Both the Catwoman AND Patience sides of Patience lose themselves in vengeance and fury. And then? Because they didn't just incapacitate Laurel? Laurel gets a chance to retaliate and do the same, almost punishing Catwoman in a way for not only making her feel weak like she did before Beau-line, but also because Catwoman is everything that she wants to be. Catwoman's beauty, youth, and self-confidence is a threat to her, even as artificially beautiful as she herself is now. It'd be like Catwoman is the Snow White to her Evil Queen, posing the only real challenge to her title of Fairest Of Them All! That hatred and anger within her could result in her making the same mistake Catwoman did with not just taking her down, allowing Catwoman's Nine Lives power to kick in and bring her back to full power as one of her lives fades away. 7. Make the duality more clear! I personally think that Catwoman should've been multiple characteristics of Patience put together and then amplified. She's Patience's impulses, her ferocity, her diva, her inner warrior, her lust, and her suppressed confidence brought to the forefront and multiplied by 10. As you said...the movie hardly explained and clarified just what was going on with the whole Patience/Catwoman thing. It should really be as simple as Catwoman simply being a different lens that Patience's base consciousness operates through at times. It's not Patience losing her memory or anything like that. It's her wild side kicking in and compelling her to do all the things she wouldn't usually do out of fear. The simplest and funniest explanation for it is that Catwoman is that urge you get to go fast and race other drivers in a car. It's the urge to do a backflip or cartwheel. It's the insane urge to go skydiving out of the blue. It's Patience's inner, untapped thrill-seeker that contributes to her doing things like leaping between rooftops, swinging around using her whip, and getting engaged in fights with dangerous people to begin with. It's what has her outside at night, walking the streets, because she's powerful now and *can*, so she will. Who's going to stop her, after all? That last bit brings me to... 8. Catwoman should've ended the movie as a thrill-seeking guardian of the night. She's started on her journey of freedom and discovery, seeking to figure herself out and explore her newfound empowement. Part of that would be providing other women the chance to roam and explore the night as she does by providing for the safety of women all over the city via her legend. We'd see a glimpse of her facilitating the ability of women to feel safe at night when she fights a group of dudes harassing women earlier in the film. Now it'll have evolved into the random sightings of her and beatdowns of all those who seek to cause women harm in the late hours causing the rates of crimes against women to decline sharply. In a way, she'd almost be like the Batman of the city...with a little occasional crime like theft, trespassing, and breaking and entering thrown in. She isn't always a "good girl", after all. Her letter should be addressed to like Ophelia and Ophelia only, and while she does the voiceover there could've been shots of her leaping between rooftops after beating up some bad dudes, earning the occasional cheer and call of her name as streets filled with more women than ever in all sorts of outfits see her soar above their heads. And, because she's a human being, one of those overly excited cries from one of her friends, maybe of a "Is that Catwoman? Hey, Catwoman! Do something cool!", would make her smile and pull out her whip to swing it for her "adoring audience.", instead of her just strutting and whip cracking just because it's hot for the mostly male audience. And boom. Roll the credits. Play an edited version of "Like Cat". The audience cheers. Everyone goes home satisfied, hopefully with women being the most so. Of course, there's a ton of other things that'd need tweaking to make the movie good as well, but those are the basic things I think are needed to really sell the empowerment theme and make it a cult classic amongst women. Anyways... Yeah, that's about it. Sorry if this ran a little long. I just got REALLY inspired by your review and had to share some thoughts. Thanks for posting this video! I'll definitely be sure to look at some of your others if they're all as good as this gem!

I'm old, but thanks. The perspective with the actor, what she did, how she had humility, enjoyed the joke she WAS MOST DEFINITELY NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN ON... She knew and damn, pride in someone who could have been used, but said F U. So nice though, thanks. Ohio loves a daughter we didn't deserve.

I have a massive connection to cat woman, I always remember the affect this movie had on me. We all used to play pretend as kids, and all the boys would be able to pretend to be super powerful cool super heroes and characters (I had a brother so.... all I had at that point was princess leia or padme amadalla!!! who did not fight much!!) But when my mom watched cat woman for the first time WOAH was my life changed. I always wanted to be catwoman, I loved catwoman, it was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Watching it now -- duh! I know its absolutely horrid, critically speaking obviously its terrible. But I will never forget Halle Berry for what she did for little tiny me and my pretend games, I felt like I could be a super hero and be big and strong like all the boys in the neighborhood and that did more for me than anyone could imagine. This is as a young white girl too -- holy SHIT I couldn't imagine what that did. This movie is ass as an adult, but I will never let it go. Ur right, shes cunty as fuck and I love it. Sometimes the critics will say "this isnt artistically perfect" but I will say, I think its socially perfect. radical vid btw I fucks with yapping abt girlhood staples.
