Tarp Survival. 14 days of storm tent & tarp camping in the wilderness. Caught in Massive Storm of Hail, Thunder, Lightning & Heavy Rain in the mountains of the north. Solo Camping.
This is part 1 of my 14 day trip in the wilderness at the borderlands. I get caught up on the mountain pass in a massive storm of hail, lightning, heavy rain and thunder and have to shelter under my tarp under a rock to try and survive the massive storm. Thunder and lightning go off all around me and the hail is massive. These 14 days will have plenty of storms, and this is the first of them. I am not really sure yet if I have survived.

The sounds, the visuals, the storytelling, the clothing, the equipment, your voice, the lightning, the thunder, the hail, the tarp, the painted red "T" on the stone markers - all of it - are amazing!

As an Australian, it's so weird hearing you describe 25 degrees as hot but, on the flip side, we find 10 degrees too cold here and I'm sure that's barely cold for you.
@NorwegianXplorer

10 degrees is warm, minus 20-30 is cold lol We expect 10 degrees in the mountains in summer
@connie7128
@connie7128 Год назад
I live in the Arizona desert in the U.S., and for us, 25 degrees is quite pleasant! I think parts of Australia are far hotter than here though. We do get down to freezing in the winter overnight at times.
@mrnicktoyou
@mrnicktoyou 11 месяцев назад
@getwthenewage4871 well, I live in the south of Australia, in Melbourne which generally is colder than Central and Northern Australia but even we get days of 45 Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in the summer. I usually just stay in my air-conditioned home on those days.
@mrnicktoyou
@mrnicktoyou 11 месяцев назад
@getwthenewage4871 Melbourne is only a little colder than Sydney and Perth during winter, just 3-5 degrees, but we get more cold days, winter is longer. And similar in summer but flipped, our hot days are just as hot but we don't have as many hot days. Not sure about the Outback (never travelled there), but yeah, I think it's super hot in summer.

Wow Jarl! You really hiked into one heck of a storm! The hail hitting your tarp and bouncing on the ground sounded and looked like popcorn. Or maybe it looked more like hominy. 🤔 With a sky full of buckets of hail and swarms of mosquitoes many a hiker would have turned back. I myself have turned back on a backpacking adventure due to maddening mosquito attacks. And I did experience light hail at night while camped below Glen Pass in Kings Canyon National Park. I did the loop. I believe you have done this loop also. And I had a bear experience similar to what you had!

The hail-balls jumping up as little ping-pong balls the noise of which exceeds the growling of thunder. What an adventure ! Highly scaring ! And you... all alone in the middle of "nowhere". Thank you so much for filming all this. You had a little fear, didn't you ? Quite normal. I'm not 50 yrs old yet, but I've seen hail here (I don't use those disrespectful colonial terms of state colonies, to me it's the land of the dawn; Wabanaki Indian territory) worse than this. If you're actually only half my age, not twice, I'd still be a little surprised. Over 100 though, of course I know that can't be so. There's been more hail storms during my folks times that doubt were worse than this too, so. I might have believed you, if you claimed to be a teenager. It has been a little while, so that might actually be possible. I guess I'll never know since you don't want to say, oh well.

We didn't have time to setup much protection so just huddled as best we could amongst the rocks. There was heavy hail and lightening all around us. ! Yeah, I hear what your saying. Summer before last lightning hit a fiberglass radio antenna at my place. It not only melted the fiberglass antenna and it fell over. But it blew a hole in the ground as big around as a basket ball. It was a good thing I had an 8 ft. Ground rod at the base of it. It took out several thousand dollars worth of equipment in the house still. The worst lightning damage to a tree I had ever seen was on a huge cottonwood tree. When I used to hunt I remembered this good area by a huge cottonwood tree. Then one time I went to find that spot. I would always look up high because they get huge. Well I ran onto debris starting at over 100 yards from it. Pieces of cottonwood tree. When I found it, this huge cottonwood tree had been reduced from probabbly at least 95ft. Or so down to about a 15 ft. Stump. Cottonwood trees are so full of water that it just exploded it. That is why i stay away from them if I'm in the woods. I have seen people cut them down before and it looked like someone turned on a water faucet. I knew of one that was hit at least 4 times, it finally died. The big one that blew up was probabbly 5 ft. Across at the bottom. Our water table here is real high most the time too though. Most times I could dig 3-4 ft. And the hole will fill.

Here in Kentucky USA I've seen hail the size of your fist which can be deadly if you can't get to shelter not to mention the damage it does to trees, crops , homes and other infrastructure! I've had my fair share of close lighting strike that leave you feeling a tingling sensation. I've also seen trees and metal fencing have 3 to 7 feet of small lighting bolts reaching into the air above them during or just before a large lightning strike near by! I think the technical name for that is "leaders" do to the extreme electrical charge difference of the earth to the atmosphere in a thunderstorm. All that said I still enjoy mother nature's fury even while hiking or camping!

👋Hi there Norwegian Xplorer, Another wonderful video shared. Always thrilling, exciting & enjoyable! The wild weather "adds" to the adventure, although the weather was so merciless here. Glad to see that you dealt with it so well. I'm slowly catching up on all your videos, one by one, but will take me a few days to watch all. Tusen takk for sharing.🙏

Yeah, I dont remember hail storms in the old days that much either when I was growing up. But for about the last three years we have gotten some dangerous hail, some as big as baseball's. I had several of those tarp supe garage in a box type things. One had a rubberized coating inside. The hail went clean through two of them. I figure the one under a giant maples leaves helped save it. Hail that big is dangerous. It would be good in my opinion to put a tarp over the tent.

Yeah, it looks like there are more big hailstorms happening

@@NorwegianXplorer yeah, I'm 62 and I live in Michigan and I remember alot of storms. I live way out in the country. And over the years I have seen some bad weather. One time we had a storm come in so fast that we instantly out of the blue had gotten hit with 90 mph winds. And my daughters ran to our room . And within that 90mph constant wind we heard a whoom sound. We apparently had tornados everywhere. And then I heard tree limbs fall all over. I looked out the windows, and told my wife that we had a small tornado go over. The reason I knew that is that my friends cotton wood limbs were sitting in my yard and he lives a quarter mile away. Every road within 5, miles of us had trees across them. Luckily I worked for a tree service. And I had every road opened in no time. Many people burned wood too. Including my half fin neighbor. He used to always go fishing on the great lakes. But I didn't like the storms he would go out in.one time on his way to isle royale he had to turn around and come back to the south side. Because he ran into storms. Two boats following him one time sunk behind him somewhere. He had been communicating with them on the radio shortly before they went down. The water I think is like 42 degrees F. So it only takes them minutes to get hypothermia and go down.he spent much time up there. He even went over where the edmund Fitzgerald is and could see it with his sonar. I was surprised to see how many known ships had sunk on lake Huron. I remember being out on Huron off Oscoda watching nuclear bombers going and coming all the time from wurtsmith airforce base. They would travel to near Russia and back I heard and saw how gigantic they were all the time that I was out there and seen the black smoke come from them not sure if they were b52 or b1
