Well how else are the thieves supposed to make a living? Work for it? That lady was trumping on their rights to pursue happiness, and that's in the constitution. That's the upside down world we live in today.
Recyclers who buy stolen cats shall be liable for 200% of replacement and installation costs and be prosecuted as severely as the thieves! Theft victims SHALL pay nothing!
I know in my area, they are supposed to get identification before accepting questionable recyclable materials such as catalytic converters, copper wire, etc, just like a pawn shop. Stolen cats stand out like sore thumb and agree that the recycler should bear some responsibility by accepting them.
If you make that a state law, they'll just take the cats out of state. If you go on car forums (especially about sports cars and trucks) you will often see people BUYING your catalytic converters because lots of hot rodders and DIY mechanics remove them for various reasons (car is offroad only, emissions/smog isn't required in their area, the cats are clogged, they replace the cats with different cats, etc.) I had some guy in Pennsylvania if I recall buy my catalytic converters when I removed them on a sports car. I just shipped them to him.

Let's all agree that if we are ever a jury member of someone on trial for killing a thief caught in the act, we vote NOT GUILTY. No matter how much pressure they apply, stick with not guilty.
No jury needed in my state. State law says that deadly force can be used to protect yourself or property. Guess that's why I don't hear this happening in my state
It's everywhere, I live in Canada. Mine was stolen from my 2011 Mitsubishi RVR with very low mileage from my apartment parking lot. Considering my insurance deductible is $1,000 and the work is estimated to be around $3,000. I just can't afford to have it fixed. I'm on a fixed income due to a disability so just finding $1,000 is not going to happen. I'm so angry that these creeps get away with this. I'll never have another car now and at almost 60 it feels like a violation. Something has to give.

Nobody should be accepting catalytic converters except from reputable repair stations or 1:1 in exchange for a new one. Otherwise you know they’re stolen.
That's gonna be a hard one to pull off bc its pretty normal for people to sell their catalitic converters. But maybe they should require a picture id when selling one.
If you drive a Prius, do yourself a favor and have a cage installed on the catalytic converter, and make sure your car insurance covers catalytic converter theft. They are targeting that model specifically and they are very expensive to replace. My parent's 2007 Prius has been hit 3 times, however, 2 of the three times they left empty-handed due to the cage.

Totally agree man, you try and stop them, they can get violent. And if I’m ever approaching one to get them to stop, there’s one in the chamber waiting just incase.
The problem is the criminals get caught, then their boss bails them out, within hours they're back stealing again, and when they finally go to court they just get a slap on the wrist. They should be jailed for at least 5 years. And they should be required to pay back the whole cost that the victims had. It's all a joke.

@Carol well Carol now these days, certain people who commit crimes comes in all colors. We need to watch what we say, so we won't become hypocritical. Crime is all around us no matter what neighborhood we live in, criminals have no respect of persons nor color. WE all need to be careful of anyone looking suspicious. And above all , no one is in any position to point out certain people. Because criminals are in every group or race of people.

Stop the scrap dealers from buying the converters. Everybody talk about the thieves while the scrap dealers continue to be allowed to buy stolen goods. It is downright incomprehensible that this is taking place. There are scrap dealers in western Wisconsin who openly ask for catalytic converters from certain car models AND even list what they will pay.
🤔 so when you catch some one and is convicted of catalytic converter theft and if found guilty of that crime the fines and all monies should be compensated to the victims of the theft not to the courts nor cities 👍
Wonder why some loser criminal stole mine as it had over 100,000 miles on it. This happened a few years ago and I had my other car in the shop last week and they were replacing 2 stolen CCs and said one was costing the owner five thousand dollars. They need to deal with the recycle businesses that are buying these, they know they're stolen.
How? Submit an application to an established, reputable place of business. Provide a...well probly won't have a resume or sound references. If offered, be punctual to the interview and prepared to discuss "skills and experience." Follow up with all required training. Arrive on time for work, clock in, put in an honest day's work and clock out. Repeat. 👌

No one wants to defund the cops that value others life, just the ones who are murderers. Would you feel like defunding is necessary if one killed your family members. Back when the problem of copper being stolen..a law was passed where to exchange the metals for cash Id's Must be shown..greatly slowing the theft of copper.
Bringing back and then lowering the standards to execute criminals will accomplish two things. 1. Stop career criminals and repeat felons. 2. Eventually solve the prison over crowding problem. Even this kind of crime can ruin a family or even a person's life because not everyone can afford to get that fixed.
If jail was ball busting rock breaking work all day with no internet and tv, pretty soon the crooks will figure it out. Right now jail is too easy. All jail does is make crooks better crooks.
