NO AUDIO: Newly-released video from an incident at SeaWorld San Diego in 2006 shows the killer whale Kasatka grabbing a trainer's foot and pulling him underwater.
That’s a warning shot if there’s ever been one. Katsaka could have ripped his foot off instantly. The fact that she did not even lacerate his skin shows she was not biting him, just holding on to him as gently as she could. Considering their bite force, this in itself shows incredible restraint, gentleness, caution from the Orca, and undeniably shows she went out of her way not to hurt him. She also knew to bring him back up to breathe without waiting too long. Even at the end, as he gets away, she gently turns around and moves slowly. Had she wanted to, she could have charged and gotten to him in less than 2 seconds. She allowed him to swim away. Katsaka standing still after letting go, letting him pet her shows she enjoys contact with her trainer, has a bond with him, and was not trying to hurt him. She simply made a show of force, caused by the frustration and pain she was feeling after being separated from her offspring. Really no different than a child/adolescent yelling or acting out when they feel their caregivers are not listening to them & instead emotionally affecting them. Only in this case, Katsaka really is the top dog that will always win the fight, if pushed to that point.
To be honest if I was locked up for 30 years inside a little cell by a bunch of jerks but there was this one guy that was always kind to me that happened to come to me right as I was going to go crazy and attack, I'd probably give him mercy too. If it was a random trainer they would have died though
Yeah but it’s not the trainers fault, they were taught lies about their job or otherwise they wouldn’t work there and this incident happened because SeaWorld decided to separate the whale from her young baby
@@paimonspie8913they weren’t taught lies. It’s common sense not to take animals from the wild and keep them in essentially a giant bathtub, when they belong in the ocean. These trainers know about animals. They aren’t stupid. They know what they’re doing when they take jobs like this. Everyone knows how animals are treated in places like this and if you don’t in this day and age then you’re just ignorant. This is 100% on the trainer as well. People have no morals and will do whatever to make the cash flow keep coming.
YES! All the cases of people falling I to enclosures and the animal being shot, people trying to have exotic animals and being attacked, and things like this! The animal didn't ask for this, it's an animal. You don't get to steal it and then be upset it didn't want to be there
They don't tell you the other part to this, but you can look it up. Kasatka attacked as a result of punishment because she wasn't training the way they wanted. She was only interested in momming her new baby, and so they decided to separate her and her baby. During this performance she heard her baby crying out from a back pool, so she attacked out of frustration. They shipped her baby away after this.
@@southernsweettea3478 Well obviously he knew, but there’s nothing he could do about it. He doesn’t run the show, he merely trains the animals and makes sure they’re in good shape etc. And before you say “He should’ve resigned” there will always be someone to take his place, and eventually there will be someone who won’t give a damn about the animals whatsoever. He obviously did as a similar thing like this happened before in the past.
@@southernsweettea3478 That's like blaming the waitress for her knowing the chef microwaved your food to warm it up instead of cooking it the correct way. Don't yell at her for it, she had nothing to do with your microwaved pasta. She was doing her job and had no say in what higher ups do.
Its not that easy they will die in the wild unfortunately of how dependent they are on humans. There life was determined the minute they were captured.
@@katie7513 ok katie lets just imprison them, huh we need money to help fund this project, I know! lets turn this into an attraction and raise the funds to keep them out of the wild.
This dude was definitely smart about the entire situation. He knew if he had tried to swim off too early or panicked that he would've been dragged right back under. Kudos to him for keeping calm and reading the situation well enough to survive
You guys know these orcas are abused right? Seaworld and places who have orcas in large tanks are deserving of whatever those orcas do those people abuse these poor animals who need to be swimming in the open ocean
Being underwater that long would drown the average person..... Throwing in the stress and fear adds another huge factor.... Amazing he survived that... His lungs are HOF
I went there in the early 90s, being face to face with an orca at the big glass window as a 4 year old. Will never forget it. But it took me a while to realise the abuse these animals endured.
The calmness of that trainer will always be so impressive to me. A lot of people wouldn't have been able to keep that kind of composure and might've drowned. He's very lucky to be alive.
Being calm enabled him to stay under water without filling his lungs full of water. That’s a pretty big factor. I love seeing killer whales in pools instead of a vast ocean.
She dominated him. They are EXTREMELY intelligent creatures. They should be left in the wild or a sanctuary where they can have liberty and not forced to perform like a circus
@@lunao8816 he simply did nothing wrong except do his job. The orca was frustrated with being in captivity in SeaWorld. It's not the guys fault. Stop wishing something that isn't his fault.
This wouldn't happen if they didn't force him to do tricks against his will. The Orca let this man live. He held him up at the end so guy could breathe. He didn't have any intentions of killing him... Poor whale is plain sick of their abuse. Much goes on behind the scenes with this whale. They punish him, they put him in a pool that he can't move around in, like us being in a bathtub. They withhold food, hit him, & wayyyy more..don't let these trainers fool you they just do it for the money not for the love of animals.
Amazing? He is a partner in crime, keeping orcas torturely captive for the sake of entertainment and greed, I hope he had learned from that lesson and became an advocate against the evil sea worlds
So many emotions here. Firstly, I'm so happy he survived. That was absolutely terrifying, but he held his wits and knew that he needed to try to stay calm AND that her need her to be calm, too. Second, I read that this orca mom was separated from her baby which is just sick! I'm going to leave it at that. Third, no one blames the orca. Period. I also don't blame the trainer, either. By the way he's interacting with her, her obviously cares for her quite a bit. He wanted to work with her for the right reasons, his love for this animal. Fourth, I would love nothing more than to have these animals freed, but it's not that simple. Orcas are mammals and as such, don't do things solely by instinct, but largely by teaching and instructing. Some of the orcas were taken from the wild, but others were born in captivity. The ONLY way to release them would be to also teach them how to hunt. If an orca doesn't know how to hunt, it cannot eat and will die a slow, painful death through starvation. There's also teaching them about territory and migration (in the case of transient orcas). They need you know how to navigate the waters, how to avoid being beached or stranded, and to understand that boats and a great number of other things are dangerous. They also need you understand that humans they encounter in the wild are NOT the same humans that held them captive. An orca has never attacked a person in the wild, but releasing a captive creature into the wild that has been habituated with the presence of people is something they also need to be taught about. In order to release these animals, there needs you be a reintroduction program to teach the beautiful creatures how to survive on their own in the wild. To do anything else would be amazingly reckless as well as careless. That, or make a reserve where they can have plenty of natural space to live, but where they can also be monitored and fed until they can become familiar enough with the natural outdoors to be able to be let go.
The wetsuit they used to wear is ridiculously resilient, it still managed to tear it off but the wetsuit is what prevented it from drawing blooding, the trainer did suffer multiple fractures in his foot from the bite.
And keep in mind that they do not attack humans in the wild. There’s no documented case of it ever happening. They’re smart. This animal knew what it was doing.
@@o.1660 The surfer claimed he was briefly bitten by animal with "horizontal tail" while swimming amidst seals. He was immediately let go with no further bites and swam to land but needed stitches. This was in the 70s, off Big Sur. If true, one non-fatal case in all of human history is an amazing record for an animal that eats Great Whites (even seals have killed people). In fact, there have been cases when Orcas saved people from sharks when their ship sank off the Australian coast.
A large marine mammal that only has a pool to swim in when it's used to the ocean, pumped with drugs to keep it docile, separated from its family, forced to play tricks for another species' entertainment. Gee, I wonder what could go wrong. You'd eventually be at the end of your rope too if someone did that too you.
This man in particular was a trained diver before he started as a trainer, so his experience & understanding of how to hold his breath while being pulled close to the bottom of a tank that deep, at that speed & for that long is what saved his life
@@keirawalton2578 Harsh but true. I'm VERY anti animal abuse and exploitation. That includes stealing Orca's from their families and natural habitat and sticking them in an aquatic circus.
I would say the whales mercy saved his life. No one gives any credit to the whale for letting the trainer go. He didn’t even inflict any injuries or anything like that. He was just playing around.
@@macysondheim he has a broken foot and ankle. Notice how when he tried to run he fell as soon as he came down on that broken foot. He probably didn't even know his foot was broken until after
@@macysondheim but the whale once he realized the trainer was leaving went after him, if the whale had noticed he was leaving a minute early, he might not have been so lucky
Lori williams. It is funny hardley anyone would find profiting of of slavery even to this day heartbreaking but would for animals. Oh wait that happened a long time right?
We are so arrogant as a species that we think we can keep a 12500lb whale in a swimming pool and not expect something like this to happen, The whale was absolutely right to behave like this and any animal would under the same circumstances. To be fair the reaction of the whale was rather understated and controlled considering it’s circumstances.
Context: they separated her (Kasatka) from her baby, and she heard the baby's vocals. Orcas have strong social bonds and emotions, and are extremely intelligent. In the wild, Orcas are very friendly towards people. 0 fatal attacks recorded, and there has even been instances where Orcas saved drowning boaters or feed fish to divers.
@@RobertGi I'm assuming you're saying you know at least 3 people that have died from orca attacks, I'm also assuming you don't mean 3 people you knew personally (if you're saying you did, then I call BS). But what was said is 100% correct, there have been no verified fatalities involving orcas in the wild. The only fatal attacks have occurred in captivity because DUH
The man survived because the whale decided he will survive. No other reason. Despite being imprisoned, they show more empathy than the humans involved in their imprisonment. Shame on anyone who still supports these places.
If the orca wanted to he could of ripped of his leg in a heartbeat. Good thing the trainer is a diver, so that helped him to hold his breath for awhile
Mp Pow wow naw a whale can hold its breath wayyyy longer lmao look it up he brung him back up cause he knew he needed to breath not because the whale who lives in water was drowning 🤔🤦♂️😂😂😂
No, the whale was goofing off...haven't you ever joked around with your friends and played around? These are apex predators. If this was anything other than playing a little joke on his human buddy, that man would have been dead in 5 seconds. He would have been in a hundred dismembered pieces in another 60 seconds. #whalesjustwannahavefun
Henz Sol mate do your research. These whales were drugged, forced to perform and depressed. The whale wasn’t goofing off, they want to be set free or not forced to perform everyday for nothing.
Eevee Vulpix I mean if you want to encourage depressed and suicidal animals then go ahead, but it’ll just show how much of a downgrade of a human being you are
just stupid to hate the TRAINERS and use as reasoning becasue THEY keeping them captive. yeah of course the trainer keep them captive since we all know that the trainers are the one who own the whole park xD just stupid to acutally believe it and down right evil to wish them death
Nobody wishes the trainers death. Even the whale didn't wish him death or she would have killed him. Animals should not be imprisoned. This is what happens when they are.
The scariest part is that the orca, without letting him go, brought him back to the surface just in time ...which means he was literally "playing" with his prey...like they do with turtles and rays in the wild
She absolutely did, and maybe have seen it as a game. He may have been the trainer who always held his breath the longest, and today she wanted to test how long he could.
Also I looked it up, and the reason she did that to him is because she was upset because she could hear her baby making noise from a distance (she had be separated from her) and couldn't get to her and this was her way of dealing with her stress. She could of killed him if she wanted to, she let him back up because these animals are way more forgiving than they should be.
that whale showed a ton of mercy, pun intended. given the situation, she could have annihilated that trainer in a nanosecond, captive animals do get fed up. he's lucky she wasn't fed up enough to do him in, but she did show him who's really in charge, and the real boss of the water. not those ra-ra fake cheerleaders in wetsuits making a livings off this.
@@catherinemarie7058 10 months late but its Mercy. Mercy is a type of pods dolphins are in. There are 4 and killer whales are dolphin called orcas. The biggest dolphins.
if you've watched the movie blackfish, then you know it wasn't the trainers' faults. They weren't told any details about the attacks that the whales had committed against trainers; most of the time they were actually told the trainer who had gotten attack was at fault, and that the whales were NOT aggressive or deadly. So shut up. The trainers loved the animals.
Thats tilikum, thats a dude whale. Legend whale. Most of the seaworld whales today are decendants of him. Hes been apart of 4 human deaths. Watch the documentary BlackFish
Kasatka heard her daughter, Kalia, crying for her in a nearby tank during the show. She was frustrated at being separated from her crying daughter. The trainers said Kalia had been screaming just before Kasatka went nuts.
Who else can’t breath watching this?! This poor guy really loved the orcas and learned too late that what he was doing was wrong. He’s out there educating people about why these orcas need to be left alone. What an amazing survivor.
In fact another former trainer says this guy pete punish the whales when they didn't do a good show..and also.he keeps working that place for many years

Good they keep those whales in prisons and make them perform circus tricks for our amusement that whale shoulda taken his leg off that trainer doesn’t give af about the whale obviously
I will never ever understand why so many people love to play with their lives by jumping off massive cliffs, out of planes, swimming with the apex predator of the entire ocean.
@Christina Smith i totally appreciate the sentiment. But hed have to have a katana. A smallish knife even 6 or 8 inches you only anger it. Wouldn't even make it through the fat layer.
Thank god he was able to hold his breath for such an incredible amount of time. Saved his own life. These animals need to be kept strictly in the wild they have multiple oceans to swim through for a reason.
This was a show of dominance. The whale was basically saying, "You can put me in a tank and I'll do your tricks, but I'm in charge here, not you. NEVER you."
Apparently this happenes not once but multiple times through training so assuming by the calm demeanor he had and how quickly he assessed the situation I can say this is probably not his first time
@@jamesoden1223 If it wasn't his first time, then had he drowned it would have been completely on him. One incident is all it should take to realize that your life comes before any job.
Oh my God, could not breath just by watching this, when he jumps that net and sees that whale getting close, wow he was in panic running away, crawling, God gave him the luck and wisdom to get away from that tragic so scary moment
I think it’s even more sad that the whales are so emotionally, and socially wrecked. They were taken from their pods in the wild, then put into tiny tanks they have never been in before, and with other orcas they are not friends with, and I mean like they are orcas that are from different cultures and they speak different languages so they fight, then they were forced to jump for the pleasure of humans, and if they didn’t they were deprived of food, then they are frustrated and can’t do anything about it, so attacked the humans. Then sea world says that they take good care of them?!?!? And the orcas die young so sea world says that they only live to 25-30 years but they really live to be 80-100 for females and males live 50-70. And sea world also says that their fins flop over as they get older but really it means that they are unhealthy, and also in the wild they only have fins that fall over less than 1% of the time. I’m sorry for the orcas they don’t deserve that kind of treatment and they suffer a lot. I am never going to sea world again.
These animals are basically tortured for decades and most people are just fine with that but when one animal is threatening a human it will be talked about as a sensation for decades.
This is so hard to watch... when he finally comes up for air, you can tell he’s trying to breathe as much as he can in case the whale brings him back down since he was still holding onto his foot... you can see how much fear he had by the way he swam away
saw the documentary black fish with my kids yesterday. its a very informative documentary. my 10 year old kid said he would never go to seaworld. thats how powerful the movie is.
I love Blackfish! It breaks my heart. I went to Seaworld back in the 70's when I was little and it breaks my heart to know what really goes on there...😓
I like the film but I think it could've been a little edgier and just a bit more informative--and I'm not saying this because I want sick thrills; I consider myself an empathic person and actually felt really bad for both trainers and orcas based on what I saw. I just think, to truly bring home the gravity of the situation, the film shouldn't shy away from the serious content. It already flirted with shocking content and then every time we saw something alarming, the camera would just stop and move on to some other image. I found it a frustrating directorial choice. The director had more footage she chose not to show, I guess to keep it family-friendly enough so that people could watch it with their kids, and because she herself is a mom, which probably colored her thinking. I think, if she's going to make a case for how dangerous it is for human beings to interact with captive orcas, she really needed to shock the public awake and not hide the footage she didn't want people to see, even if it resulted in a more mature rating. But I still think it's a powerful documentary and I'm glad it's had the cultural impact it has had to bring people to a better awareness that orcas kept in captivity are truly mistreated in ways we would consider inhumane if we did it to human beings.
I’m glad he wasn’t killed. That said, maybe gigantic fish shouldn’t be forced to live in an aquarium being taught how to balance a beach ball on it’s nose.
You know, if the “trainers” stopped agreeing to do this then it wouldn’t happen. Trainer aren’t as responsible as owners but they hold some responsibility
Heretic Life I don’t thinks the trainers are mostly to blame. It’s the company because Seaworld is the one telling these trainers that what they are doing is fine and safe.
@@wienerschnitzelislife6070 And who doesn't want to make money from something they are trained for, handsome amount of money actually . Having said that iam against it, it's not the trainers who captured these orcas. Nor the trainers have a say these matters. @@wienerschnitzelislife6070 people who persist in working for a company that exploits both them and the animals they care for are only hurting themselves. Commenting on that sad reality is nothing more, nothing less. Perhaps the issue is that it so directly touches on one of many problems? All the time.
He wasn't out of it, he was catching his breath of air because he didn't know when he would go back under. He also tried stroking the orca to let him go because he thought the bond him and the orca had would make it stop
I am awed and also scared by these incredible creatures because their intelligence is astounding, she was doing as she was told performing she just added her own part to the show which obviously the diver who cannot hold their breath underwater couldn't handle
I only found out about this from the documentary blackfish. My god what a good documentary on why KillerWhales shouldn’t be in captivity and this man shows what it’s like to be built different. Look at the way he is trained in deep diving. The way he knows he’s going back under. This man has me nothing but impressed on how he responded to the situation.
If everyone knew what happened to these poor whales at that terrible prison...they'd understand exactly why the whale did that in the first place. End of story.
Imagine being able to roam the seas then be put in a small tank separated from your pack. Captivity is barely manageable with humans. Why would it work on other intelligent mammals who pay little mind to ways of man?
