During a boat refit you constantly need to caulk stuff: stanchion bases, cleats, chain plates... all these things frequently leak. But what to use for caulking? My answer to this questions is definitely BUTYL!!! Lots of people use Sikaflex 291i, 295UV or Pantera when actually butyl tape would be a cleaner, more reliable, cheaper and easier solution. In the US people have been using butyl time for longer, here in Europe it is not yet widely knows. That's a shame in my opinion, so I made this video to shed some light into the darkness of the butyl world. I show you when it's appropriate to use butyl tape, how to use it correctly, and in which situations you should rather rely on conventional caulking methods.
